GNB-CPD position paper from SG16 - EN 1337-3:2005

Structural bearings - Elastomeric bearings - Use of historic data to DIN
4141-14/-140 for initial type testing

General scope, limitations and aim of this guidance for Notified Bodies (NBs)
This position paper contains guidance for Notified Bodies (NBs) involved in the attestation of
conformity of structural elastomeric bearings according to EN 1337-3:2005. The purpose is to help
NBs work equivalently and come to common judgments. This guidance contains informative
material (which NBs should or may follow) and normative guidance (which NBs shall follow or at
least work equivalently to as circumstances demand).

This guidance is thought necessary to provide clarity and completeness for NBs so that they can
work equivalently. It supplements and makes practical for NBs the harmonized standard
EN 1337-3:2005, approved AG guidance, and Standing Committee guidance in the form of GPs,
which also apply - unless otherwise explicitly stated in this guidance. This position paper should not
contradict nor extend the scope of the work and role of a NB, nor impose additional burdens on the
manufacturer, beyond those laid down in the CPD and EN 1337-3:2005.

This guidance should be considered valid until the relevant standards are amended to include the
guidance (as thought fit by the CEN/TC); or until guidance from Commission, SCC, and AG has
changed on relevant matters. Whereupon, the paper should be considered for withdrawal/revision
and be replaced by new guidance as necessary.

This position paper was considered approved by SG16 on 1 September 2006 and by Advisory
Group (AG) on 27 October 2006.

Note: NB-CPD/SG16/06/039 covers the frequency of continuous surveillance, assessment and

approval of FPC to EN 1337-3:2005.

Conditions under which historical data to DIN 4141-14/-140 may be used

This position paper contains the requirements for NBs concerning the use of historical data on the
basis of DIN 4141-14/-140 for the initial type testing in accordance with EN 1337-3:2005.

The historical data have to be proven by original tests reports, which will become part of the test
report in accordance with EN 1337-3:2005. The tests reports have to be made by an approved body
in accordance with DIN 4141-14/-140, German Landesbauordnung and German PÜZ-
Stellenanerkennungsverordnung.

Tests not mentioned in this position paper shall be carried out in accordance with EN 1337-3:2005.

If a chloroprene rubber (CR) in accordance with DIN 4141-14/-140 which has had shown a shear
modulus Gg = 0,9 MPa at nominal temperature in accordance with DIN 4141-14/-140 within the
tolerances according to EN 1337-3:2005 is used as elastomeric material for the elastomeric
bearings the following values need not be determined afresh:

EN 1337-3:2005, 4.3.1.1 Shear modulus at nominal temperature at the sample type I;

EN 1337-3:2005, 4.3.1.2 Shear modulus at low temperature;

EN 1337-3:2005, 4.3.4 Resistance to repeated loading in compression;

EN 1337-3:2005, 4.4.2 Physical and mechanical properties of the elastomer.
