CULTURE IS NOT A LUXURY, BUT A NECESSITY

From fine art and music to values and manners, culture has always been defined differently and
also variously. However, it has always played a vital role in presenting a country and keeping its
history. Since the beginnings of time, citizens tried to preserve and carry one national designs
about culture to each generation and keep the idea that culture is the most precious wealth of a
country.
How I said, culture is the wealth of a country, but still it is not a luxury. I would say that it is
more like a priceless jewelry which is for everyone no matter their status. That is simply because
nowadays it is more affordable than ever, thanks to lots of countries, which have no charge
entrance in museum and offer memberships to theaters, operas and libraries. For instance, in the
National Gallery from London you can stand without paying a penny and admire the most
incredible works of art ever. In addition to this, most of their operas have reasonably priced
tickets and, in that way, you can attend the most luxurious and elegant masterpieces. Although, if
you do not really prefer indoors concerts, you can simply walk down the principle street of a city
and admire its singers, actors and acrobats, which is totally free. It is simple and all you have to
do is admire.
Winston Churchill said “A love for culture has never weakened a nation, indeed it has
strengthened nations in their hour of peril.” From my point of view, this quote perfectly
describes why culture is a necessity. Not a single nation could feel more united when its national
values and culture are put under pressure or danger. Taking for example the latest events, which
are about Notre-Dame de Paris. It was horrible for French people seeing how one of the greatest
architectural and finest work was in flames. People were standing outside near the cathedral and
sang together Ave Maria, hoping not to lose their state beauty. Furthermore, they collected the
necessary amount of money in order to rebuild it and keep it safe for another 850 years. They all
did that in less than five days, only because they were strong as a nation and they realized that
nothing can break their love for culture.
In a nutshell, culture nowadays matters and it is a necessity due to the fact that it is accessible to
people worldwide basically for free. Nonetheless it gathers people together and strangeness a
nation in their hard times.
