    Onceuponatimeadaughtercomplainedtoherfatherthatherlifewasmiserableand
    thatshedidn’tknowhowshewasgoingtomakeit.Shewas tiredoffightingand struggling
    allthetime.Itseemed justasoneproblemwassolved,anotheronesoon followed.

    Herfather,achef,tookhertothekitchen.Hefilledthreepotswithwaterandplaced
    eachonahighfire.Oncethethreepotsbegantoboil,heplacedpotatoesinonepot, eggsin
    thesecond pot, and ground coffeebeansin thethirdpot.

    Hethenletthemsitandboil,withoutsaying awordtohisdaughter.Thedaughter, moaned


    andimpatientlywaited, wonderingwhathewasdoing.

    Aftertwenty minutesheturnedofftheburners.Hetookthepotatoesoutofthepotand
    placedthemin abowl. Hepulledthe eggsout and placed them inabowl.

    Hethenladledthe coffeeoutandplaceditinacup. Turning toherheasked.―Daughter,


    whatdoyou see?‖

    ―Potatoes, eggs, and coffee,‖ shehastilyreplied.

    ―Lookcloser,‖hesaid,―andtouchthepotatoes.‖Shedidandnotedthattheyweresoft.
    Hethenaskedhertotakeaneggandbreakit.Afterpullingofftheshell,sheobserved thehard-
    boiledegg.Finally,heaskedhertosipthecoffee.Itsricharomabroughta smile to herface.

    ―Father, whatdoesthismean?‖sheasked.

    Hethenexplained thatthepotatoes,theeggsandcoffeebeanshadeachfacedthesame adversity–


    theboilingwater.

    However, each onereacted differently.

    Thepotato went in strong, hard, and unrelenting, but in boilingwater, itbecamesoftand
    weak.

    The eggwasfragile, with thethin outer shellprotectingitsliquid interior untilitwasput in


    theboilingwater. Thentheinsideof theeggbecamehard.

    However, theground coffeebeans wereunique. After theywere exposed to theboiling


    water, theychanged thewater andcreatedsomethingnew.

    ―Whichareyou,‖heaskedhisdaughter.―Whenadversityknocksonyourdoor,howdoyou
    respond?Areyou apotato, anegg, ora coffeebean?―

    In life, thingshappen around us, thingshappen to us, but theonlythingthat truly


    mattersis whathappens withinus.

    Which one areyou?
