Managing green productivity

Productivity in broad sense is a measure of how

efficiently a variety of resources is used as input to
produce outputs needed by the society .

Naderi (1996) mentioned that the best solution to

waste management lies in the elimination of casual
factors.
Managing green productivity
The system model havefour phases.
• Assessment phase
• Foundation phase
• Waste minimization phase
• Eco efficiency phase.
Managing green productivity
1. Assessment phase:
In this phase the assessment generally assumed to
have the knowledge relating to organizational climate
and impediments to change management.

The methodology may change the structured

interview or questionnaire survey or any other
organization development intervention technique.

The basic objective of this phase is to development a

comprehensive check list which can facilitated in
identifying different types of wastes obtaining
primary information about their genesis and
modalities and skill needed to make meaningful
intervention in the various processes carried out in
the organization.
Managing green productivity
2. Foundation phase:
Managing green productivity through clean
manufacturing is a change in management approach
that may require three different but simultaneous
initiatives. They are:

Evolving a mind set for total waste minimization: this

initiative focuses upon contextual factors, e.g. values
structure and new performance measures, which can
drive change through the existing authority and
control structure of the organization.
Managing green productivity
Creating a sense urgency for clean manufacturing :
this initiative is top down directed where in the top
management engage the total organization to realize ,
commit , mobilize and innovate.

Direct the effort in manipulate dimensions: this

initiative concentrates on the strengthening the
communication network , employee cooperation , self
managing team, etc. which can primarily work on a
number of direct issues to generate the maximum
productivity and quality impacts, and then move
forward to indirect and sport issues.
Managing green productivity
3. Waste minimization Phase:
the objective of this phase is to expend the scope of
efforts in such a manner culture of waste
management become a regular practice .

during the assessment phase, the organizational

climate towards changed management is created .

Based on the gaps identified, strategic direction e.g.

waste reduction , waste control , waste avoidance and
waste prevention , need to consider the following
importance
Managing green productivity
• Policy guideline
• Planning emphasis
• Organizational approach
• Training and development
• Management process and system
• Project planning and implementation
Managing green productivity
The ultimate goal of this phase is to bring significant
performance improvements, cut costs, boost
competitiveness and benefit the stake holders.

Freeman (1995) mention that in many parts of the

world , waste management is being demonstrated to
improve profit, Reduce environmental risk and
protect market share.
Managing green productivity
4. Eco-efficiency Phase:
during this phase , a post audit may be necessary to
evaluate the degree of waste minimization and
process improvement achieved in the earlier phase .

eco-efficiency is the means for organizations to

improve their environmental performance and save
money by reducing resources use throughout the life
cycle apart from post – auditing , which is carried out
to evaluate the status .
Managing green productivity
The following practices need to be build up:

Building environmental stewardship in to the

corporate fabric and aligning manufacturing strategy
with the environmental policy.

Setting target for improving green productivity , and

designing system to tack, measure and enforce these
targets.
Managing green productivity
These innovation methods for waste
avoidance and privation on continuous
basis.

Ecoefficiency will be the business norms

for the 21st century. The ultimate mission
is to achieve a better quality of life
everyone.
