URBAN MANAGEMENT - WASTE MANAGEMENT BRIEF.

Our waste management strategy is very similar to the saying, Divide and Conquer, where in this

case it would be segregate and conquer. Segregation is one of the most important activities that

we promote and enforce for effective waste management in our urban area and to make landfills

reduce in size gradually.

Segregation of waste components is encouraged at source as the project strives for maximum

waste recovery through composting, recycling, and reuse, and aims at zero waste to be disposed

onto dump-yards and landfills.

By using composting methods to manage the biodegradable waste, we will be able to:

• Minimize waste that needs to be disposed in centralized landfills, thus extending existing

landfill capacity.

• Reduce the environmental impact of disposal sites from the bio-degradable waste.

• Benefit the soil by using organic compost instead of chemical fertilizers.

The waste management project will contribute to a cleaner local environment, maintaining pure

surface and ground water, healthy soils, and clean air. Noteworthy, a clean local environment

will immediately benefit the most vulnerable groups of society whose livelihoods often depend

on the natural resources available locally.

The project will consist of the following activities in broad outline:

• Segregation of waste at source

• Primary collection

• Composting of biodegradable waste

• Recycling of non-biodegradable waste

• Awareness and information campaigns

At the site, all biodegradable waste will be composted in aerobic composts. Aerobic composting

refers to a process where biodegradable waste is biologically decomposed under controlled

conditions by microorganisms (mainly bacteria and fungi) under aerobic conditions. The

product, compost, can effectively be utilized as an organic fertilizer to rejuvenate soils.

The long-term objective is thus to reduce the environmental degradation caused by solid waste

and liquid waste and to eventually achieve the zero landfill status.
