T here is a lot of concern over violent crime among teenagers in the UK nowadays. Everyone is talking about
the number of youngsters who carry knives. After each new incident, the media stresses the need to give
the police new powers to deal with the problem. But is that really what is needed? This week it was announced
that there have been a record number of complaints made against the police. Some 22,000 of these complaints
5 were over ‘neglect or failure of duty’. Here, I believe, we have a crucial clue as to what is really needed.
As a journalist, I occasionally go to the criminal courts. Of the last three trials I have heard, two prosecutions
have failed because the police did not collect the necessary, and available, evidence. In one case there were
over a dozen witnesses. Not one had been contacted by police. When asked why, the police officer replied:
‘The victim didn’t give us any names.’
10 I also have a personal story to tell about this. My son was present when one of his friends was attacked with
a broken bottle. He ran to a safe distance and dialled the police emergency number. He was told to go to
a police station. When he got to the nearest police station, he found that it was closed! Most of the police
stations in our area are, I now realise, closed at weekends.Yes, shut on Saturday nights!
It seems that tough new police powers are not what is needed. Instead, the police should have sufficient staff ,
15 resources, and commitment to do their job properly.
