Sample Sports Story Format


This 10-paragraph format can work for any sport with two opposing sides.

§ 1st paragraph: Answer the questions “who,” “what,” “why” and “how.”

§ 2nd paragraph: Explain just “why” and “how,” then answer the
questions “where” and “when.”

§ 3rd paragraph: Explain the significance of the game (e.g. win-loss


records)

§ 4th paragraph: Get a meaningful quote from the winning


player/coach/team.

§ 5th paragraph: Describe the highlight of the game – the game-winning


play, the turning point, the crucial error.

§ 6th paragraph: Insert a good quote from the losing player/coach/team

§ 7th paragraph: Describe the losing side’s best moment during the game.

§ 8th paragraph: Highlight the winning team’s best player – his stats,
plays.

§ 9th paragraph: Highlight the stats of the losing team’s top player or
players.

§ 10th paragraph: Insert your play-by-play descriptions in reverse
chronology (from the finish to the start).

Remember not to sum up or editorialize at


the end of the article.
