Static Electricity and Resistors

I. Static Electricity and Coulomb’s Law

1. A.) Triboelectric charging is the process of transferring electrons as a product when two
objects come into contact with one another through rubbing and then separating. Since the
texture of the glass rod and the silk are smooth, rubbing them against each other produces
positive charge. While when a rubber rod was rubbed against a fur, this produces negative
charge with electron transfer from fur to the rubber rod.
b.) Positive charge
c.) Silk cloth when rubbed against fur will produce a neutral charge repelling each other
because they both have same charges.

2. Coulomb’s Law

a.)

Charge on Charge on Force Attractive

1 (q1), 2 (q2), (Felect), or
Coulombs Coulombs Newton repulsive
-9 x 10 -6 324 x 10 -6 0.8 Attractive
18 x 10-6 324 x 10-6 0.9 Repulsive
-18 x 10-6 -407 x 10-6 1.1 Repulsive
27 x 10-6 -407 x 10-6 1.7 attractive

Analysis: There is direct relationship between electrostatic force and the

magnitude of the two point for their product but in terms of the squared distance
between the, inverse relationship is observed. Change in charges has a direct
effect on an electrostatic force meaning as the charge increases, the force
increases as well.

b.) Constant Magnitude of Charge and Varying Distance.

q1 = -26 x 10 -6 Coulombs

q2 = 386 x 10 -6 Coulombs Separation Electrostatic

distance Force, Felect
(squares) (Newtons)
10 1
8 2
6 4.1
4 10.7
Analysis: There is inverse relationship between the electrostatic force and the
separation of distance of the two objects. When on variable increases the other
decreases. Its direction is also opposite even with a constant distance.

II. Resistors in Series and Parallel

2. What is the equivalent resistance for the resistors in the figures below?
a. Eq = (1/6 + 1/8) / 1 Eq2 = 25.0 Ω + 3.429 Ω Eq3 = (1/28.429 + 1/20) / 1
Eq = 3.429 Ω Eq2= 28.429 Ω Eq3 = 11.740 Ω

b. Eq = (1/7 + 1/21) / 1 Eq2 = 14.0 Ω + 28.0 Ω + 5.25 Ω

Eq = 5.25 Ω Eq2 = 47.25 Ω
