Motivation Letter:

I am inclined to Computational Engineering because it has proved its worth not only in design but also
in development and manufacturing processes; thereby becoming an essential part of new inventions
with its impact on various disciplines of engineering.

Ever since my childhood, I always wanted to be in the ranks of highly educated persons and flourish in
life. From the very day I was mature enough to realize the real meaning of education; I found myself
more inclined towards the engineering appliances, their applications and working procedure. I had
always been fascinated by aircrafts and this interest grew further when I visited Ellsworth Air force
base in Rapid City, SD during an exchange year in the United States of America. It inspired me to take
Aerospace Engineering as a career.

When I initially started my career as an undergraduate in National University of Sciences and

Technology (NUST), all I knew was the obvious fact that Aerospace Engineering is concerned with
manufacturing and designing the aircrafts. Later on, I realized this field is composed of several
subdivisions rather than merely fabrication and designing. Among various areas, Computational
Mechanics and Aircraft Structures fascinated me the most. In my final year of the degree, Pakistan’s
space agency SUPARCO embarked on a program to design, develop and deploy a fully functional cube
satellite. My instructor offered me a position of an Undergraduate Research Assistant to work on this
project. I jumped on this position, seeing it as an amazing opportunity to become a member of
national research team by being a part of indigenous development process under Pakistan National
Students Satellite program.

The moment I laid my hands on this project, it further fortified my interest in this area. The structural
and thermal analysis had to be accomplished in PATRAN/NASTRAN. At the end of the project, I was
awarded with Gold Medal for Best Project Award in Aerospace Engineering. But it doesn’t end here.
Completion of Aerospace Engineering with a Best Project Award is not the end of story but an exciting
beginning for me, I must say. I am resilient in my struggle to pursue deeper in this field and want to
gain as much knowledge as possible. I firmly believe that in modern era, multi-disciplinary skills are
essential for providing innovative solutions to complex engineering problems. Adhering to these facts, I
reckon that this master degree in Computational Engineering combined with Bachelor’s in Aerospace
Engineering will benefit me to widen my expertise in areas such as Finite Element Methods,
Computational Mechanics of Structures, Design Optimization as well as nourishing my skills in
Engineering Materials and Fluid Mechanics. Being proficient at these skills will not only help me to
shine in the Aerospace industry but also will be applicable in Mechanical and Civil Engineering
problems as well, thereby providing me better career opportunities.

This brings me to my enormous fascination towards the Ruhr University Bochum. The university is
well-known for integrating valuable skills in the fields of superior academics, research and professional
experience. Looking at the university’s profile, I am truly convinced that a Master’s degree from a top
Engineering university in Germany will enhance my knowledge level in Computational Mechanics and
equip me with relevant analytical skills which would help me to achieve my future objectives. I,
therefore reckon Ruhr University Bochum as a perfect platform to achieve all that I dream to become
in my career. Furthermore, by being a part of international community, I would be able to rejoice the
cultural diversity once again that I am lacking ever since my exchange year to the United States of
America back in 2006-07.
Last but not the least, key traits in my personality include highly motivated, confident, energetic and
result oriented nature acknowledged for integrating creativity, teamwork as well as potential to work
independently in order to yield optimized solutions. Apart from academics, I have also received laurels
for several sports activities including Football, Table Tennis and Horse riding. I have also received
accolades for vigorous participation in volunteer work on various occasions both in the United States
of America and in Pakistan as well.

In a nutshell, considering my passion to gain knowledge, I am confident that I will be a valuable asset
to your institute and will be looking forward for a positive response.

Thank you in anticipation.

Yours faithfully,

Usama Ahmed
