While there have been some victories for the #MeToo movement such as Harvey Weinstein's sentencing, there have been no new laws passed nationally or in Virginia to improve protections for victims of sexual assault and harassment in the workplace. The Fair Employment Protection Act introduced in 2017 and reintroduced in 2019 made it through two readings in the Senate but did not progress further. However, the Weinstein case may set a new precedent for holding famous perpetrators accountable.

Unfortunately, there is not much to be said about what is new as
far as laws or improvements with sexual assault and harassment in the workplace cases. Since I wrote my paper in fall of last year, there have been a few victories such as the sentencing of Harvey Weinstein, and the progression of the #MeToo movement. As far as legislation on a national level as well as in Virginia, there has been no change. The most recent legislation that has been introduced was the Fair Employment Protection Act, which was first introduced in 2017 and then later reintroduced in 2019. It was introduced and read twice in the senate in July of 2019, but has made it no further.
Nonetheless, the Harvey Weinstein cases will set a new precedent
for sexual assault cases. Weinstein is a famous producer who dominated Hollywood for many years, until six women came forward about his violence against them. Years after the accusations began in 2017, he was sentenced to 23 years in prison.
