Basic Bluebook Format for Cases

[Case name], [Volume number]  [Reporter/Journal], [First page number of the case], [Pinpoint page
number] ([Name of the court/forum], [Year]).
Example: Verma v. Sharma, 2 Crim.L.J., 350, 359 (Ker. HC, 2002).
Important Notes:
• For legal writing, the name of the case should be written in normal font in footnotes, but if
the case name appears in the main text, then it has to italicized. Moreover, while mentioning
a case name in the main text, there is no need to write the full citation. Complete citations
are only written in the footnote area.
• The case name only requires the last names of the parties. There is no need to mention the
first or middle names.
• It is necessary to underline the name of the case while citing it in the footnote area. Do not
underline the comma following the case name.
• It is necessary to mention the name of the court. However, if the cited case is from the
highest court of law (Supreme Court of India), then the name of the court need not be
written.
• Every citation in the Bluebook format ends with a full stop / period.

Important Notes:
• The book’s title needs to be underlined for the purpose of legal writing. The rest of the
citation is in normal type.
• It is mandatory to include the exact page number (Pin point page) of the book which is being
referred to.
