In order to promote India more effectively as a convention destination, the


1988 travel industry had, under the patronage of the Ministry of Tourism, set up
the India Convention Promotion Bureau (ICPB)

The scheme of Rural Tourism was started by the Ministry of Tourism with
the objective of highlighting rural life, art, culture and heritage at rural

locations and in villages which have core competence in art, craft,
handloom, textiles and natural environment.

The Ministry of Tourism has taken steps to promote Film Tourism in the
2012 country by signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry

In the arena of international cooperation, India participated in the 4th


2013 Meeting of Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) – India

In order to develop and promote tourism in the region, Ministry of Tourism


has organized the International Tourism Mart with the objective of
2013 showcasing the largely untapped tourism potential of the North East region
in the domestic and international markets from 18-20 January 2013 in
Guwahati.

The total contribution of Travel & Tourism to GDP was INR7,642.5bn


2014 (6.7% of GDP) in 2014, and is forecast to rise by 7.5% in 2015, and to rise
by 7.3% pa to INR16,587.2bn (7.6% of GDP) in 2025.

In 2014 Travel & Tourism directly supported 23,024,000 jobs (5.5% of


2015 total employment). This is expected to rise by 1.9% in 2015 and rise by
2.2% pa to 29,020,000 jobs (5.7% of total employment) in 2025.

India connected to East India via a narrow corridor squeezed
between independent nations of Bhutan and Bangladesh. It
comprises the contiguous Seven Sister States (Arunachal
Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland,
and Tripura), plus the Himalayan state of Sikkim.
