communication, especially for urban areas, where the
interference occurs because of other RF systems and difficult
to achieve line of sight. Antenna design is a crucial part of the
RF front end. With multiple antennas used in MIMO the
effects of antennas such as mutual coupling and size cannot be
ignored. Researchers are using microstrip antennas due of their
properties as low profile, less weight, easy to fabricate and low
cost, with a shortcoming of narrow bandwidth [2]. Various
methods have been used to improve the bandwidth of
microstrip patch antenna like quarter wavelength width
extension and taper matching [5]. With the advent of Multi
input multi output (MIMO) the [6] capacity of wireless
systems has been increased. Methods such as pattern diversity
and frequency diversity are being used. Recently omni-
directional radiation patterns have drawn great attention and Fig. 1. Layout of dual band butterfly planar antenna.
provide a challenging task for the antenna designers [3]. In
frequency diversity multi band antennas are being used to
increase backhaul link with legacy systems. Researchers have
been working on Dual Band Planar antenna, In [8] the author
have designed Gemini- shaped microstrip patch antenna which
can be used in C- Band and X- Band Applications. In [9] Dual
Band characteristics are realized by using two different
resonating loop modes slot basic mode and loop basic mode
for higher band and lower band respectively. In [10] dual
feeding line is proposed which are orthogonal to each other,
which is supported by CRLH transmission-line-based feeding
network.

resonates at 5.3GHz having bandwidth 180 MHz; some extra
harmonics are also present in the antenna. A stub was
introduced to achieve dual band resonance. A parametric study
was conducted on the length and location of stub. As seen from
figure 4, 5 and 6 the length of stub controls the resonance at
5.3GHz. By adjusting the length of stub the frequency can be
tuned. The location of stub is used for impedance matching.
At S = 4mm and v= 5mm best result was seen.

from fig 8 antenna resonates at 2.9 GHz and 5.32 GHz with
bandwidth 63.6 MHz and 188.7 MHz respectively. It is also
observed that all the unwanted frequencies are also removed
with the use of stub.

MHz respectively. In the presented structure, butterfly wings
shaped radiating patch is used to improve the impedance
bandwidth and also an additional resonance is excited by
inducing a stub at feed line. The designed antenna has a simple
configuration and easy fabrication process. The measured
results are close to simulation results.
