AN ASSESSMENT ON THE LEVEL OF POWER TOOLS SAFETY AWARENESS

Chapter 1

The Problem and its Background

A. Introduction

According to Gumaro (2019), power tools can be useful, yet dangerous when used

incorrectly, or if not maintain in ground condition. The tools are important part of the job and

it should be treated, cared for and used in professional manner.

Electricity is the flow of electrical power of charge. It is secondary energy source which

means that we get it from the conversion of other sources of energy, like coal natural gas, oil,

nuclear power and other sources, which called primary sources. The energy sources we use

to make electricity can be renewable or non-renewable, but electricity itself is neither

renewable nor non-renewable (Energy Information Administration, 2007).

From the study Diciano (2019), he mentioned that grade 11 Electrical Installation and

Maintenance students have knowledge about power tools such as grinder, heat gun, and

electric drill being the most popular. Participants also described the functions of the tools

they know. Moreover, their practice and attitude in power tools helped to distinguish the

appropriate tool to use and emphasize that its use makes the activity faster and easier to

accomplish.

Moreover, understanding hazards in electrical installation is one of the basic skills

that should be mastered by Electrical Installation and Maintenance students. They

enumerated following safety measures in situation where they cannot prevent hazards.

Furthermore, students prevent hazards by following safety regulation such as wearing

complete PPE (Gumaro et. al 2019).

Statement of the Problem

In this study, the main reason why the researcher conduct this research is to know the

level of awareness using electrical power tools of grade 9 electricity students.

Specifically, it will seek answer to the following questions.

1. What is the profile of the respondents in terms of :

a. Grade level and section

b. age

c. sex

2. What is the knowledge of students in terms of:

a. general safety measures

b. electrical power tool hazards

c. electrical power tool uses

3. What is the level of safety awareness of grade 9 students in using power tools?
4. What are the problem encountered by the respondents in using electrical power tools?

Significance of the Study

This study is very important to the following:

Student

Teacher

Government

Definition of Terms

1. Safety awareness- Personal safety is about being aware of your surroundings,

avoiding potentially dangerous situations, using common sense and trusting your

instincts.

2. Electricity

Chapter 2: Review of Related Literature and Studies

This chapter includes literature and studies related to the research

Safety
Safety is a state in which hazards and conditions leading to physical, psychological or

material harm are controlled in order to preserve the health and well-being of individuals and

the community. It is an essential resource for everyday life, needed by individuals and

communities to realize their aspirations. (Quebec, 2019)

Safety is very important considerations in any organization. The Term safety means a

state of being protected against physically. Many employees work in industry and each of

them needs Safety and that's what the company has appoints safety engineers to provide

Safety training to each of the Employees. (Mondal, 2018)

Electrical safety refers to any safety precautions taken against electricity. Electricity is

undoubtedly one of the most basic needs in modern life, but electrical hazards are very

dangerous. Some of the serious injuries you can receive from electricity include electrical
shocks, electrical burns, and electrocution, which could be fatal. Electrical safety precautions

can protect against electrical shocks and burns, and authorities responsible for workplace

safety ensure that workers are following the correct safety procedures while dealing with

electricity. (Safeopedia, 2020)

“Safety first” is a term that highlights a company’s commitment to make any decision

with top priority being placed on promoting safety. Other business priorities such as cost or

output quantity will not be allowed to take priority over safety in making decisions.

Now, this does not mean there will never be hazards or risks present, but it does mean that the

company will make decisions that would proactively design-in safety (by choosing the

correct materials, engineering design, approach to installation, performance of risk

assessments, etc.), maintain systems and equipment suitably and sufficiently, to provide

support and interventions through supervision, information, training and inspection, etc., and

also respond meaningfully when safety incidents arise (e.g. through accident investigations

and decisive follow-through action to identify and address root causes). (Balkissoon,2019)

Assessment

Assessment tools are techniques used to measure a student’s academic abilities, skills,

and/or fluency in a given subject or to measure one’s progress toward academic proficiency

in a specific subject area.

According to Fuchs, 2019, assessments can be either formal or informal. Informal

assessments are often inferences an educator draws as a function of unsystematic

observations of a student’s performance in the subject matter under consideration. Formal

assessments are objective measurements of a student’s abilities, skills, and fluency using

screening, progress monitoring, diagnosis, or evaluation.
