BROTHERHOOD.
When the drs called us all in to witness his last ebbing, earthbound breaths - I
walked down the halls of the ICU along with a group of men. Every one whom I've
been fortunate enough to observe evolve to possess and exude that rare breed
of high competency and trust. They had proven who they were by their deeds.
A tribe of masters.
We had all shared years in shaping this one tribe, SAYOC - a family art. All due to
the guidance of one man Pamana Tuhon Chris Sayoc, Sr.
We knew tonight would be our final class with our mentor and brother.
No mistake, his training could be a curse. We know that because it changes you.
Sayoc Kali as taught by this one man changed every one of us. Unfortunately, it
does not change the untrained around us.
Ever listen to a guy open his mouth and the toxic words that he fills the room
with is filled with self doubt masked in bravado? Or his actions are anchored by
fear based hesitation? How every situation is an opportunity to be in the spotlight
rather than make their brothers shine? Or worse, how "victimized" they are? If
that type of behavior is excusable, then you can stop reading here and the world
will be full of soft curves void of sharp corners.
Not one of the above characteristics could be tracked walking down that hallway
at that moment in time.
There are so many more who were not physically there with us because they
were on real world missions. Their shadows were cast in sync with ours.
This is Sayoc.
This is "One Tribe".
This is the #onetribe you have seen appropriated by others.
There are no others.
From sundown til the sun had risen the guys had streamed into the hospital
waiting area one by one. Decades of irreplaceable shared experiences . How
much he had taught us, and in turn all those who we have thus been able to
teach representing our art. "Our art". Sayoc is our art. Every room that our tribe
members have affected was because we had trusted our training. We celebrated
that relationship. We spoke of a life well lived, of death as but a somber beat
before life continues on.
The ICU room's curtains were drawn around us to allow for privacy. Just enough
space to accommodate all of us.
There was PT's family, his wife Silak Tess and all the Sayoc children.
The geometry of the room did not allow all of us the angles to see, but we could
hear the monitors and machines. Every beat, ping and steady pulses of air. The
numbers indicating vital signs of life slowly drop.
Each sound reminded me of the complexity of life as well as the clarity of how he
deconstructed it.
The Vital Template.
Timers and Switches.
The Reactionary Gap.
Feeder. Receiver. Observer.
and more.
Even in passing he was able to teach us our final Sayoc lesson.
As the lesson ended, as the final beat sounded symbolizing that " never ending
buzzer " something unplanned, and unrehearsed happened-
Except like everything in Sayoc, it all came down to his last install: "Trust in your
Training "
We gave Pamana Tuhon Sayoc a formal salutation, in unison taking one knee
and saying, "Mano Po" around his bed. A hand raised in respect for his lessons.
A long pause that filled the room with tribe energy.
The nurse who coincidentally was Pinay, took a knee as well - she started crying.
It must have been quite an anomaly seeing such a rugged, diverse group behave
in such a manner.
As we all stood up, we raised our unseen blades to our third eye, to the ten
thousand hands who drew their blades before us and as one tribe said, "
TUHON!"
The beep of his heartbeat flatlined...
" When we are born we inhale our ONE breath; when we die we exhale it. "
Pamana Tuhon Christopher Sayoc, Sr.
Thank you for the lessons.
We will honor your legacy.
See you on the other side my brother.
