Alba Iulia,is the municipality of Alba County, Transylvania, Romania, consisting

of Alba Iulia (residence), Bărăbanţ, Miceşti, Oarda and Pâclişa. It is located in the
southwestern part of Transylvania, on the banks of the Mureş River.

In antiquity, the place of the present fortress was the Apulum Roman camp. The city
was between 1541 and 1711 the residence of the Transylvanian princes and thus the political
capital of the Principality of Transylvania. Between 1595-1596, under Sigismund Báthory,
respectively between 1600-1601, under Mihai Viteazul, he was the residence of the political
leader of Moldavia, Transylvania and Wallachia, in a personal union

Alba Iulia is the keeper of some of the most important and ancient historical
monuments in Romania and not only. At the same time, historical events of special
importance, but less known, took place in Alba Iulia. Here are some of these:

➤ Apulum was the richest city in Roman Dacia. In the middle of the third century he also
received the epithet "Chrysopolis", meaning the Golden City. The most important riches of
Roman Dacia flowed here to Rome.

➤ At Apulum, the only legion of Dacia (the 13th Legion of Gemina), which has been active
throughout the Roman rule, was stationed.

➤ At Apulum there were also two cities in the rank of colony, a unique case in Roman Dacia,
and we are rising in the Empire.

➤ The Roman Catholic Cathedral "Sf. Mihail "in Alba Iulia is the most valuable monument
of medieval architecture in Transylvania.

Roman Catholic cathedral "Sf. Mihail "from Alba Iulia.

➤ The oldest Renaissance building in Romania (Lázó Chapel) can be found at the Roman
Catholic cathedral "St. Mihail "from Alba Iulia.

➤ The first city in Transylvania where the Jews were allowed to sit was Alba Iulia, at the
time of Prince Gabriel Bethlen.

➤ The First New Testament in Romanian was printed in Alba Iulia (the New Testament from
Balgrad - 1648).

➤ The first Romanian bookworm was printed in Alba Iulia (Bucoavna - 1699).

➤ The largest bastion fortress in Romania standing is the Alba Carolina fortress in Alba Iulia.

➤ The oldest meteorological station in Romania is at the Batthyaneum Library in Alba Iulia.
It operated with some interruptions from 1840 until 1955.

➤ The oldest masonry synagogue in Transylvania was built in Alba Iulia (1822-1840).
➤ The first cinematographic performance in Transylvania (17 April 1898) took place in Alba
Iulia.

➤ Buffalo Bill, the legendary hero of the West, and his band Buffalo Bill's Wild West and the
Congress of Rough Riders held a show in Alba Iulia on July 12, 1906.

➤ The first kings of Great Romania, King Ferdinand I and Queen Maria (October 15, 1922)
were crowned in Alba Iulia.
