he ability to evolve is a strength of the cruise industry. While some
T elements of the traditional voyage have faded with time, other
parts of the current shipboard experience hark back to the early days of
the modern cruise industry and even the great ocean liners of yore. It is
this mix of time-honored and contemporary that broadens the appeal of
cruising and makes it an increasingly popular vacation option.
Cruise Travel explores the changing elements of the cruise experi-
ence, fondly remembering yesteryear while examining how vacations
at sea continue to evolve.
Sense of Adventure
The earliest cruises appealed to a sense of exploration and adven-
ture, visiting places such as St. Thomas, Hawaii or the Panama
Canal—destinations that seemed exotic but today are commonplace.
Excited passengers lined the rails to see their ship arrive in port and
residents bid a warm welcome. Musical groups might have serenaded
the arrivals with traditional songs, and, while politically incorrect by
today’s standards, passengers tossed coins over the sides of the ship
so local boys could dive for them. Cruise lines scheduled overnight
stays in ports, allowing passengers to sample nightlife ashore.
The addition of cabin balconies took passengers away from the
open decks, and, with more frequent stops, the once exotic ports
became regular stops. In some ports today, it is not uncommon to
