Exercise 3:
I=Igor T=Travel Agent
I: Morning
T: Good morning. Er, just a moment and I’ll be with you. Um, now, how can I help
you?
I: Yes. I ……………………….. about an eco-holiday – you know, one of those
holidays where you don’t damage the environment at all and you get close to nature.
T: Yes. I remember Mr Petrov, isn’t it?
I: Yes, Igor Petrov. You said you were going to look up what was available at rather
short notice.
T: I did, and I’ve got a few things here. Just before I show them to you, though, let
me get down a few details.
I: OK
T: Right now. How long are you hoping to go for - a week, a month?
I: I originally planned to go for ……………………….., but I think actually two
would be better.
T: Fine. I’ll just note that down Mm. I think it’s a ……………………….. for a
holiday. You don’t want to go for too long or it’s difficult to get back to work again
afterwards. I always think. And what’s the limit on how much you’re prepared to pay?
I: Yes. I don’t really want to ……………………….. £1.750 if I can help it
T: Mm. Fine, but when you come to look at the brochures, I should just point out that
each of them ……………………….. if you pay in advance.
I: Oh! That’s good. How much is it?
T: It depends on the holiday you choose, but it’s worth bearing in mind. Do you have
any special requirements which I should note down, by the way?
I: Er. yes, one thing I’m keen on is having travel insurance while I’m away, so can
you give me a quote?
T: Well, I can’t actually at the moment because our ……………………….. is down
just now, but as soon as we have it up and running again and we know what holiday
you’ve chosen, I’ll ………………………... Is there anything else?
I: Yes. there is. Actually I’m not a meat eater, so you’ll need to specify to the airline
that I need to eat vegetarian meals when I fly.
7

T: OK vegetarian meals. By the way, what nationality are you, Mr. Petrov?

I: I’m Russian from St Petersburg originally

T: I just ask because I may need to see if you’ll ……………………….. for some of
the places you might visit. I’m just pointing that out because you want to go fairly soon
and it can sometimes be quite a lengthy process.
I: So, what options are still available?
T: OK. There are these ……………………….. which I managed to print out earlier.
I thought they looked good.
I: OK, let’s have a look
T: Um, the first is called the Dumbarton Tablelands. It looks pretty good to me. It’s
in ………………………... The holiday really involves being close to and watching
animals - almost living with them, in fact, because you get to stay in a quite luxurious
house or cabin built ……………………….. and surrounded by lovely countryside. And,
you know, there are birds and lizards and things if you like that sort of thing. So you’re
very sort of
I: Close to nature.
T: Close to nature. That’s right
I: Sounds interesting. I guess I could enjoy that. Er, what else have you got?
T: Well. there’s this one in the Bago Nature Reserve, where you go and stay with a
……………………….. in their house in a small mountain village away from other
tourists and the usual tourist spots, so you discover lots about the way they live and you
sort of live in the family, share their meals, help them with their work. that sort of thing
I: Mm. Not so much of a holiday, then
T: Well. It depends on you. It’s very different, and they say a change is as good as a
rest. And then there’s San Luis Island.
I: Mm. What happens at San Luis?
T: Well. It’s a ……………………….. just a few miles from the coast of Central
America, but I’m not sure if it’s really up your street. You might like it because
international tourism hasn’t spoilt it yet. but I’d say it’s more a holiday for young people.
You go and live in a hostel and, you know, you help ……………………….. and you get
to meet the kids and sort of try your hand at teaching
I: Teaching what?
T: Oh. English or Math, whatever you’re good at. What makes the island interesting,
though, is their emissions policy. There are no cars - you have to walk or use a bicycle to
get about. and you get there by sailing boat.

N: Hi. I was just going to call you. I've found some on the Internet. There are quite a
few hostels for backpackers there. The first possibility I found was a hostel called Top
End Backpacker
J: OK.
N: It's pretty cheap, you can get a bed in a dormitory for nineteen dollars per person.
Private rooms cost a bit more, but we'll be OK in dormitories, won't we?
J: Sure.
N: So that hostel has parking, though that doesn't really matter to us as we'll be using
public transport.
J: Yeah. Are there any reviews on the website from people who've been there?
N: Well, yes. They aren't all that good though. Some people said they didn't like the
staff, they had an unfriendly attitude.
J: Mmm. That's quite unusual in a hostel, usually all the staff are really welcoming.
N: That's what I thought. People said they liked the pool, and the fact that the rooms
had air-conditioning, but the problem with that was that it was very noisy, so they were
kept awake. But it was too hot if they turned it off, so they had to put up with it.
J: Someone told me there's another hostel called Gum Tree something.
N: Gum Tree Lodge. It costs a bit more, forty-five dollars a person.
J: What?
N: Oh, no, that's for private rooms, it’s twenty-three fifty for the dorms.
J: That's more like it.
N: It looks to be in quite a good location, a bit out of town and quiet but with good
transport, and quite near a beach.
J: Has it got a pool?
N: Yes, and its own gardens. The reviews for that one are mostly OK except for one
person who said they couldn't sleep because there were insects flying around in the
dormitories.
J: Not for me then. And I'd rather be somewhere central really.
N: Right. There's a place called Kangaroo Lodge. They've got dorms at twenty-two
dollars. And it's downtown, near all the restaurants and clubs and everything, so that
should suit you. And it doesn't close at night.
J: So there's always someone on reception. That sounds good.
N: The only criticism I saw was that the rooms were a bit messy and untidy because
people just left their clothes and stuff all over the beds and the floor.
J: Don't hostels usually have lockers in the bedrooms where you can leave your
Stuff?
N: Yeah, they do usually, hut apparently they don't here. Still, hostels are never
particularly tidy places, so that doesn't bother me. And the same person said that the
9

standard of cleanliness was pretty good, and especially the bathrooms, they were
Page

excellent as far as that went.

J: Right. Yeah, I reckon Kangaroo Lodge sounds the best.
N: Me too. Quite a lot of people reviewing it said it was really fun there, like even’
night everyone staying there got together and ended up having a party. So it sounds like
it's got a really good atmosphere.
J: OK, let's go for that one.
