Movements
The coordinated movements are specific, accurate, smooth and purposeful. These are
performed by integrated action of many muscles by keeping efficient postural base.

For example:

Running is an activity in which Knee flexion and extension are witnessed. The group action of
muscles of knee flexion and knee extension is discussed below.

Group action of muscles in knee flexion

Agonist
Agonist are also known as prime movers. The contraction of agonist leads to the movement of
joint.

In knee flexion, the agonist are the hamstring muscles (Bicep femoris, semimembranous,
semitendinous)
Antagonist
Antagonist oppose the action of agonist.

In knee flexion, Quadriceps - vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, vastus intermedius, rectus femoris

Synergist
Synergist work with agonist to provide suitable background and facilitate the movement.

In knee flexion, Popliteus, gastrocnemius, gracilis, Sartorius

Fixators
Stabilizes the bone from where the agonist originates. Abdominals act as fixator in knee flexion.

Knee Extension
Agonist
Quadriceps - vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, vastus intermedius, rectus femoris

Antagonist
Biceps Femoris, semimembranosus, semitendinosus, popliteus, gastrocnemius, gracilis,
Sartorius
Synergist
There are no true synergists of knee extension. However, the gluteus maximus and soleus could
be viewed as synergists to knee extension during closed chain mechanics.

Fixator
Abdominal muscles act as fixators in knee extension
