Social media addiction may bring lots of disadvantage than advantage.

In this digital
age, this issue has sparked a great pandemonium among the people from all walks of
life. Nowadays, more and more people largely teenagers are wallowing in playing
social media, such as Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and so on have taken the world
of entertainment by storm.

Initially, the social media is created for communication purpose for people from all
over the world. However, the purpose of it is misunderstood by people and gradually
changed in the purpose of using. These people are addicted because they are
affordable in buying the electronic gadget such as smartphone and laptop as most of
them are accessible to the social media application. As a result, this has caused the
catching up fast of social media addiction in this era globalization. Those addicted
teenagers will feel uneasy and uncomfortable if their life is without the presence of
social media. From a study that done by a Professor Maire ( 2019 ) from University of
Taylor, there are 94% of the students from the 2839 surveyed students faced the
social media addiction as they are facing lots of drawback such as weakening of
family relationship and facing health issue. Only 6% of the surveyed students did not
face the disadvantages of above because they don’t spend most of their time which
is more that 5 hours on social media. Thus, it is true that the younger generations
cannot survive without the social media. Thus, from my cents’ worth of opinion,
there are many downside of social media addiction among the people in long term.

Social media addiction may cause negative impacts on family relationship. Do you
ever remember when is the last time you talk to your parents or siblings face-to-
face? According to Dr.Lee Yew Ching (2020) , an expert in parent-child relationship,
he had done a research which focused on the relationship between the Frequency of
Social Media Use and The Quality of Family Relationship, found out that reduction of
family closeness is one of the most important consequences of social media
addiction by family members. The study showed that the the family who is addictive
to social media had a bad interaction with their family members, while the family
who use social media wisely had a better understanding to each other.

The main reason behind this is because the family who having social media
addiction, rarely talk to each other face-to-face, and thus they do not communicate
well on the daily basis instead of just chat by sending message in social media. This
would eventually cause the argument moreover generation gap between the
parents and children, because the children would think of their parents do not
understand and cared about them.

In the end, this will result in reduction of family closeness. In a contrary study, which
shows that parents should set a good example to their kids to use social media
wisely. The study shows that reduction of family closeness is commonly caused by
lack of communication yet social media addiction in a family is not the main cause of
both issues.
Instead, social media is a platform provides convenience to a family to communicate.
This shows that people must control the frequency of social media use wisely. In
2018, University of Reading, Malaysia, conducted a survey that showed 99% of
university student and their parents use social media, 71% of them using it more
than six hours every day. This is a 40.5% increase from the original number of 30.5%
seen in 2014. Meanwhile, this survey shows that the use of social media in a family
has increased drastically thus affect the family bonding time. In fact, we could tell
that when the one more uses the social media, the more ones will spend time on
social media instead of building a healthy relationship with each other. In a nutshell,
we firmly agree that addiction of social media can cause the reduction in quality of
family relationship.

Besides that, addiction of social media may lead to mental illness. In 2019, a study
from University Malaya Centre For Addiction Sciences director Dr Rusdi Abd Rashid,
stated that social media addiction can lead to depression, jealousy, anxiety and even
low self esteem to a person. The study showed that people who use social media
becomes the single most important activity in their life had a higher chance to suffer
from depression. In the study, the individual who is addictive to social media
experienced lesser moment-to-moment happiness and life satisfaction, while the
individual who is not addictive to social media experienced more moment-to-
moment happiness and life satisfaction. The main reason behind this is because the
individual might compare themselves to their peers on social media and seeking for
recognition and praise from others on social media. This would eventually cause
them to feel anxious and depressed when they received negative comments on
social media and thus indirectly cause them to have low self esteem. In the end, they
feel deeply unhappy and depressed and likely to commit suicide. Although studies
showed that mental illness is commonly caused by stress yet social media is not the
main cause of both issues. This shows that people must know how to relieve their
stress by meditation or exercise regularly in the daily life. People can also relieve
their stress by sharing their feelings on social media. In 2017, China Press, a
Malaysian Chinese-language newspaper, released a national survey that showed that
there are 45% of social media user in Malaysia in 2015 but the statistics has risen to
89% in 2019. Meanwhile, the percentage of social media user suffered from mental
illness increases from 3% to 46% at the same time. In fact, we could tell when the
one more uses the social media, the more likely he would suffer from depression. In
conclusion, we strongly agree that addiction of social media will cause mental illness
to a person.

There’s also an addictive nature that is been practiced by the generation nowdays
which is the emotion of social sharing where people share their emotions online.
A studies is also conducted and published in 2012 by Harvard University on why
social media is so addictive for many. The article was a finding on why platforms like
facebook and twitter or other social media are highly addictive . The study also
showed that people are better off disclosing their information about themselves
especially their mental health such as depression, loneliness, boredom,or whatever
problems might be going on in their life.eventhough many know sharing problems
with people face to face gives a satisfication to our soul . Things gets better when we
speak out and seek help from people rather than posting it on the net but theres
many people who are facing difficulties in speaking out when they have any
circumstances, therefore these bunch of people will try their best by posting it on
the net so that those who is facing the same problem will reach out to them .the
respond to the post that the person receive will definitely satisfy them with their
emotional sharing.Participants receive more satisfying responds after sharing
emotions that were positive and personally related or relevant than they did after
sharing negative feelings or emotions. Researches also found out that , large number
of likes , well as highly relevant comments increases the satisfaction. However, people
should keep their private life a secret not everything is okay to be posted. In
conclusion, everyone should think before doing anything , think twice before acting.
