The baptism in the name of a personal God, a personal Saviour

and a representative of Christ (1897)

Before He left them, Christ gave His followers a positive promise

that after His ascension He would send them the Holy Spirit. “Go, ye
therefore,” He said, “and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name
of the Father (a personal God) and of the Son (a personal Prince and
Saviour), and of the Holy Ghost (sent from heaven to represent
Christ); teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have
commanded you; and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the
world.” [Matthew 28:19, 20.] {Ms41-1897 (April 29, 1897) par.

Christ gave his followers a positive promise that after his ascension
he would send them his Spirit. “Go ye therefore,” he said, “and teach
all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father [a personal God],
and of the Son [a personal Prince and Saviour], and of the Holy

The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are present at every
baptism (1888-1905)

The Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, powers infinite and
omniscient, receive those who truly enter into covenant relation with
God. They are present at every baptism, to receive the candidates
who have renounced the world and have received Christ into the soul
temple. These candidates have entered into the family of God, and their
names are inscribed in the Lamb’s book of life. {Ms27a-1900 (April 19,
1900) par. 10} (1900.04.19)
https://egwwritings.org/?ref=en_Ms27a-1900.10&para=8384.16

In baptism we are given to the Lord as a vessel to be used. Baptism

is a most solemn renunciation of the world. Self is by profession dead to
a life of sin. The waters cover the candidate, and in the presence of the
whole heavenly universe the mutual pledge is made. In the name of the
Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, man is laid in his watery grave,
buried with Christ in baptism, and raised from the water to live the new
life of loyalty to God. The three great powers in heaven are
witnesses; they are invisible but present. {Ms57-1900 (August 12,
1900) par. 10} (1900.08.12)
https://egwwritings.org/?ref=en_Ms57-1900.10&para=8474.18

The three great and glorious heavenly characters are present on

the occasion of baptism. All the human capabilities are to be
henceforth consecrated powers to do service for God in representing the
Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost upon whom they depend. All
heaven is represented by these three in covenant relation with the new
life. “If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things that are above,
where Christ sitteth at the right hand of God.” [Colossians 3:1.] {Ms45-
1904 (May 14, 1904) par. 18} (1904.05.14)
https://egwwritings.org/?ref=en_Ms45-1904.18&para=9381.27

If there are only a few assembled, there are enough to claim the
precious promises of God. The Father, the Son, and the holy angels
will be present with you to behold your faith, your steadfast principle,
and there you will have of the outpouring of God’s Holy Spirit. God
has rich blessings in store for those who will bring not only all the tithes
into his store-house, but also time and strength of bone and brain and
muscle into his service. Those who will do this, will walk in the light,
and will triumph in God. {ST February 10, 1890, par. 4} (1890.02.10);

No one should enter the ministry until he clearly understands his

own faith, so that he can give an intelligent answer to any man that
asketh the reason of his hope. It is his privilege, as well as his duty, to
believe in a near and present Saviour,—one who is by our side, in our
hearts. His presence is far more efficacious than the most eloquent
sermons, and it is our right to expect that he will be with us in seasons
of worship, for he promised when he commissioned his disciples to go
and “teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and
of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost,” that “where two or three are
gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them,”
and added, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the
world.” {RH September 4, 1888, par. 11} (1888.09.04)

The Father and the Son – by the Spirit make abode with those
who love Jesus (1893-1900)

John 14:21-23 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them,

he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my
Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him. Judas saith
unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself
unto us, and not unto the world? Jesus answered and said unto him, If a
man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and
we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. (KJV)

He is a merciful high priest pleading in your behalf. He will send his

representative, the Holy Spirit; for He says, “I will not leave you
comfortless; I will come to you.” By the Spirit the Father and the Son
will come and make their abode with you. There is no excuse for
wavering or sinning. {BEcho January 15, 1893, par. 8} (1893.01.15)
https://egwwritings.org/?ref=en_BEcho.January.15.1893.par.8&para=459.144

“If a man love Me,” Christ said, “he will keep My words; and My
Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our
abode with him.” John 14:23. The spell of a stronger, a perfect mind
will be over us; for we have a living connection with the source of all-
enduring strength. In our divine life we shall be brought into captivity
to Jesus Christ. We shall no longer live the common life of selfishness,
but Christ will live in us. His character will be reproduced in our
nature. Thus shall we bring forth the fruits of the Holy Spirit—“some
thirty, and some sixty, and some an hundred.” {COL 61.3} (1900)

Three who cooperate – the Father, the Son and the Holy
Spirit (1900-1902)

After the believing soul has received the ordinance of baptism, he is

to bear in mind that he is dedicated to God, to Christ, and to the Holy
Spirit. These three all co-operate in the great work of the covenant
made by baptism in the sight of the heavenly universe. The Father, the
Son, and the Holy Spirit receive the believing soul into covenant
relation with God. {Ms56-1900 (August 12, 1900) par. 26}
(1900.08.12)
https://egwwritings.org/?ref=en_Ms56-1900.26&para=9937.32

Love is the great principle that actuates the unfallen beings. With
what amazement then do the angels behold the indifference of those
who have light and knowledge! The heavenly host is filled with an
intense desire to work through human agencies to restore in man the
moral image of God. They are ready and waiting to do this work. The
combined power of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost is
pledged to recover man from his fallen state. Every attribute, every
power, of divinity has been placed at the command of those who unite
with the Saviour in winning men to God. O that all would appreciate the
truth as it is in Jesus! O that all would love God in return for the love
wherewith He has loved them! {Lt165-1901 (November 6, 1901) par.
8} (1901.11.06); {Lt134-1902 (August 27, 1902) par. 8} (1902.08.27)

“God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that
whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting
life.” [John 3:16.] Love is the great principle that actuates unfallen
beings. With amazement the angels behold the indifference that those
who have light and knowledge manifest toward a world unsaved. The
heavenly host is filled with an intense desire to work through human
agencies to restore in man the image of God. They are ready and
waiting to do this work. The combined power of the Father, the Son,
and the Holy Ghost is pledged to uplift man from his fallen state.
Every attribute, every power of divinity, has been placed at the
command of those who unite with the Saviour in winning men to God.
O that all would appreciate the truth as it is in Jesus! O that all would
love God in return for the love wherewith He has loved them! Sin has
extinguished the love that God placed in man’s heart. The work of the
church is to rekindle this love. The church is to co-operate with God by
uprooting selfishness from the human heart, placing in its stead the
benevolence that was in man’s heart in his original state of
perfection. {Lt134-1902 (August 27, 1902) par. 8} (1902.08.27)

Three great infinite powers – the Father, the Son and the Holy
Spirit (1901)

Have you thought of what this means to us;—that in this prayer is

included every son and daughter of Adam, who will believe in Christ as
a personal Saviour, and take the requisite steps in repentance,
conversion, faith, and baptism? We are baptized in the name of the
Father, Son, and the Holy Ghost, and these three great, infinite
powers are unitedly pledged to work in our behalf if we will co-operate
with them. We are buried with Christ in baptism as an emblem of his
death. We are raised from the water as an emblem of his resurrection.
We are to live as new-born souls, that we may be raised at the last great
day. You are to live in newness of life; for you are dead, and your life is
hid with Christ in God. “If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those
things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.”
This is where you are to place your treasure. {Ms144-1901 (April 3,
1901) par. 17} {GCB April 4, 1901, Art. A, par. 16} (1901.04.04)

Three (great) powers - the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit
(1900-1903)

Do not venture to think that if you do not overcome your sins in this
life, you will be given another probation in which to secure the eternal
reward. No, no, no! This present time is the only probation we shall
have. And the three Powers, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit
have pledged themselves that if we walk in the light as Christ is in the
light, we shall have fellowship with one another and be cleansed from
all sin in the blood of Jesus. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and
just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
“Whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected.”
[1 John 1:9; 2:5.] {Lt21-1901 (October 5, 1900) par. 42} (1900.10.05)
https://egwwritings.org/?ref=en_Lt21-1901.42&para=9942.48

When Christ came to John for baptism, John refused to baptize Him,
saying, “I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?”
“Suffer it to be so now,” Christ said; “for thus it becometh us to fulfil
all righteousness.” [Matthew 3:14, 15.] Provision has been made that
when man repents and takes the steps requisite in conversion, he shall
be forgiven. When he is baptized in the name of the Father, the Son,
and the Holy Ghost, these three great powers are pledged to work in
his behalf. And man on his part, as he goes down into the water, to be
buried in the likeness of Christ’s death and raised in the likeness of His
resurrection, pledges himself to worship the true and living God, to
come out from the world and be separate, to keep the law of
Jehovah. {Ms31-1901 (April 14, 1901) par. 12} (1901.04.14)
https://egwwritings.org/?ref=en_Ms31-1901.12&para=7942.17
Fearful perils are before those who bear responsibilities in the cause
of God—perils, the thought of which makes me tremble. But the word
comes, “My hand is upon the wheel, and I will not allow men to control
My work for these days. My hand is turning the wheel, and My
providence will continue to work out the divine plans, irrespective of
human inventions. Man’s plans will be overthrown, and the Lord God
of heaven will reveal His glory. The Father, the Son, and the Holy
Spirit will work out heaven’s law. These three great powers have
pledged themselves to bring to nought the inventions of idolatrous
human minds. They have put the infinite treasures of heaven at the
command of God’s struggling people. As the wheel is turned by a
divine hand, the philosophy of the wisest men who are working
contrary to My purposes will become intricate and confused.” {Ms118-
1902 (October 6, 1902) par. 10} (1902.10.06)
https://egwwritings.org/?ref=en_Ms118-1902.10&para=10596.19

When we were baptized “in the name of the Father, and of the
Son, and of the Holy Ghost,” these three great powers pledged
themselves to work in our behalf as we strove to live the new life in
Christ. [Matthew 28:19.] And in receiving baptism, the human agent,
inspired with new purposes, pledges himself to die to the world and live
in obedience to Christ. The Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost supply
the power that makes him victorious in every conflict with the prince of
darkness. {Lt200-1902 (December 15, 1902) par. 20} (1902.12.15)
https://egwwritings.org/?ref=en_Lt200-1902.20&para=9955.26
I know that you will often be disappointed. But you must not become
discouraged. Commit the keeping of your souls to God, as unto a
faithful Creator. This means much more than many realize. Show that
you realize that at your baptism, in the presence of the heavenly
universe, you pledged yourselves to be separate from the world,
separate from its theories, customs, and practices. You have been
“buried with Him in baptism wherein also ye are risen with Him
through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised Him from the
dead.” [Colossians 2:12.] You were baptized in the name of the Father
and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. These three great powers are
pledged to be your efficiency, if you will continue to present yourself as
an offering to God. “And you, being dead in your sins and the
uncircumcision of your flesh, hath He quickened together with Him,
having forgiven you all your trespasses.” [Verse 13.] If ye then be risen
with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on
the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things
on the earth. For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.
When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear
with Him in glory. ... {Lt102-1903 (June 3, 1903) par. 4} (1903.06.03)

The three highest powers of heaven, in the universe (1903-

1908)

As a Christian submits to the solemn rite of baptism, the three

highest powers in the universe—the Father, the Son, and the Holy
Spirit—place their approval on his act, pledging themselves to exert
their power in his behalf as he strives to honor God. He is buried in the
likeness of Christ’s death, and is raised in the likeness of His
resurrection. He went down into the grave, but He rose from the dead,
proclaiming over the rent sepulcher, “I am the resurrection and the life.”
[John 11:25.] {Lt53-1904 (January 26, 1904) par. 19} (1904.01.26);

When we submit to the solemn rite of baptism, we testify to angels

and to men that we are purged from our old sins, and that henceforth,
having died to the world, we will “seek those things which are above,
where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.” [Colossians 3:1.] Let us
not forget our baptismal vow. In the presence of the three highest
powers of heaven—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit—we
have pledged ourselves to do the will of Him who, over the rent
sepulcher of Joseph, declared, “I am the resurrection and the life.” [John
11:25.] Christ forgives every penitent sinner, and as the forgiven one, at
the time of baptism, rises from the watery grave, he is declared a new
creature, whose life is hid with Christ in God. Let us ever remember
that it is our high privilege to be purged from our old sins. {Ms106-

God does not ask you to do this in your own strength. At your
baptism the three highest powers of heaven pledged themselves to
aid you in your endeavors to keep separate from the evil practices and
habits of the world. In the strength received from above you may live
the new life in Christ. {Ms50-1904 (May 21, 1904) par. 13}

https://egwwritings.org/?ref=en_Ms50-1904.13&para=7977.23

We are to realize that if we work the works of Christ, we shall not

unite with the world. The Holy Spirit will give us a clear, distinct
message to the world. If we will come into close relation to Christ, we
shall have a part to act in carrying forward the work of present truth for
this time. We are to cooperate with the three highest powers in
heaven,—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost,—and these
powers will work through us, making us workers together with God.
But when a man goes forth in human sufficiency, then the enemy comes
in and inspires him, and he knows not what manner of spirit he is of.
The Lord saw this, and instructed me that at the General Conference
held in Oakland, I should hold no conversation with you. {Lt253a-1903

In whose name are we baptized? In the name of the Father, and of

the Son, and of the Holy Ghost—the three highest powers in the
heavenly courts. They pledge themselves in our behalf. We may claim
the strength and the victory that they may give us, as we stand before
the world, not to ape its fashions, not to study the fashion books, but to
walk humbly with our God. “Ye are dead, and your life is hid with
Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye
also appear with Him in glory.” [Colossians 3:3, 4.] Then do not

“For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.” [Verse 3.]
“Ye are dead.” Your natural temperament was buried in a watery grave
when at your baptism you consecrated yourself body, soul, and spirit to
God’s service. As you thus pledged yourself to walk in the light of
truth, to represent in your life the character of Christ, the Father, the
Son, and the Holy Spirit pledged themselves to work in your behalf,
helping you to live the new life of righteousness. “Ye are dead”—dead
to your former life, and you have risen to live the life of Christ in union
with Christ. The three great powers of heaven work in you and for
you, that in you may be revealed the divine life, in contrast with the life
of worldliness, selfishness, and covetousness that you lived before your
conversion. {Ms30-1902 (March 2, 1902) par. 12} (1902.03.02)
https://egwwritings.org/?ref=en_Ms30-1902.12&para=9517.19
“Ye are not your own,” Christ has declared. “Ye are bought with a
price.” [1 Corinthians 6:19, 20.] We desire to see poor, deceived, guilty,
perishing souls rescued. We desire to see every church member carrying
a burden for the unsaved. This the Christian pledges himself to do when
he receives baptism in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy
Ghost. The three greatest powers in the heavens pledge their
sufficiency and keeping power to every soul who in sincerity keeps his
baptismal vow to live by that faith which works by love and purifies the
soul and to be God’s helping hand to save from Satan’s deceptive
power every one whom he can reach. {Lt131-1902 (August 18, 1902)

What was pledged to man at our baptism? What was the pledge of
heaven? Our pledge was to die unto the world. Our pledge was to not
sin against God. And the pledge, the baptism in the name of the
Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, commits every soul
that enters the family of God, that binds up with Jesus Christ, that in
every perplexity they have a Father; they have the Son, and the Holy
Ghost—the three mighty powers of heaven. If they call upon God,
He will help them in every emergency. {Ms229-1902 (September 13,

https://egwwritings.org/?ref=en_Ms229-1902.23&para=8170.29

No one is to take part in the solemn ordinance of baptism without

giving the subject careful, prayerful thought. The candidates, and
especially the youth, are to be carefully instructed in regard to the
obligations they assume in taking this step. They pledge themselves to
devote their lives to God’s service; and the three great powers of
heaven, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, pledge themselves
to co-operate with them, to work in and through them. As they accept
Christ as their Saviour, they receive power to become the sons of
God.{Ms118-1902 (October 6, 1902) par. 4} (1902.10.06)
https://egwwritings.org/?ref=en_Ms118-1902.4&para=10596.12

Those who submit to the solemn rite of baptism pledge themselves

to devote their lives to God’s service; and the three great powers of
heaven, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, pledge themselves
to cooperate with them, to work in and through them. As men and
women thus enter into covenant relation with God, they take the name
of Christian. Henceforth they are to live the life of Christ. They have
been buried with Him, and they are to “seek those things which are
above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.” {ST March 11,

Keep yourselves where the three great powers of heaven—the

Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit—can be your efficiency. These
powers work with the man who gives himself unreservedly to God,
heart and soul, and mind and strength. “If a man love me,” Christ said,
“he will keep My words; and My Father will love him, and We will
come unto him, and make Our abode with him.” And He said again, “I
will love him, and will manifest Myself to him.” [John 14:23, 21.] His
power is at the command of His believing ones. The man who makes
God his trust is barricaded by an impregnable wall. {Lt102-1903 (June

As Christians submit to the solemn rite of baptism, He registers the
vow that they make to be true to Him. This vow is their oath of
allegiance. They are baptized in the name of the Father, and the Son,
and the Holy Spirit. Thus they are united with the three great powers
of heaven. They pledge themselves to renounce the world and to
observe the laws of the kingdom of God. Henceforth they are to walk in
newness of life. No longer are they to follow the traditions of men. No
longer are they to follow dishonest methods. They are to obey the
statutes of the kingdom of heaven. They are to seek God’s honor. If
they will be true to their vow, they will be furnished with grace and
power that will enable them to fulfil all righteousness. “As many as
received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even
to them that believe on His name.” [John 1:12.] {Lt129-1903 (July 2,

https://egwwritings.org/?ref=en_Lt129-1903.10&para=7825.16

I have got Christ, avouched unto me at my baptism. How? He tells

just what we are doing. We baptize in the name of the Father, and the
Son, and the Holy Ghost, and what then? We accept of Christ, of the
three great Powers in heaven. We avouch ourselves by that baptism
that we will make any and every sacrifice as Christ has given us an
example in His life. He gave up His honor in heaven; He gave up His
royalty there, and for our sakes became poor, that He could say, “The
foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of man
hath not where to lay His head.” [Matthew 8:20.] {Ms190-1903 (July
11, 1903) par. 26} (1903.07.11)
https://egwwritings.org/?ref=en_Ms190-1903.26&para=9087.34

Let us consider that we are a part of God’s royal family, because we

have taken the pledge of baptism, in the name of the Father, and of
the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, and these great powers are pledged.
Pledged what? They will keep us, they will protect us from the power of
the enemy, that when the enemy comes in like a flood, the Spirit of the
Lord lifteth up a standard for us against the enemy. {Ms192-1903, par. 19}
Well, now, that is, if you maintain your baptismal vows. Here was a
contract made with God. We were baptized in the name of the Father,
and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, and the contract was made
with God that these three great heavenly powers would be with us, to
help us at every step, it we will unite with these powers to be helped.
Now take hold by faith. Believe that Christ will do for us just what He
said He would. Now think of this through the week, and when anything
comes up to disturb you, and trouble and worry you, be determined that
you will not give place to the devil by giving place to words that will
not honor God. And every one of you, young and old, can obtain the
most glorious, beautiful victory. You can obtain, and you can rejoice in
your Saviour. {Ms192-1903, par. 22} (1903)
https://egwwritings.org/?ref=en_Ms192-1903.19&para=8101.25

You went down into the water, and you claimed to be dead unto the
world. And then the three great powers, the Holy Spirit, the Father,
and the Son, were the names that you were baptized in, and when in
trial and when is perplexity you come right to these, and say, My
Father, I plead with Thee for Thy Holy Spirit, that when You gave these
to our world, You gave all heaven to the world in the three great
powers that were in the heavenly courts. Now this is the plea that you
are to make with God. {Ms159-1904 (September 11, 1904) par. 48}

Just think of it. Just consider it. Buried with Christ in baptism, and
the three great powers of heaven, the Father, the Son, and the Holy
Ghost take us up. And when in emergency, you feel that you know not
how to go, you just plead with Christ, “You told us, Lo I am with you
alway even unto the end of the world. [Matthew 28:20.] Now give me
power to stand on vantage ground,” and you will have it. {Ms187-1905

https://egwwritings.org/?ref=en_Ms187-1905.18&para=8966.24

The rite of baptism is administered in the name of the Father, and

of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. These three great powers of
heaven pledge themselves to be the efficiency of all who submit to this
ordinance and who faithfully keep the vow they then make. “As ye have
therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in Him; rooted and
built up in Him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught,
abounding therein with thanksgiving. Beware lest any man spoil you
through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the
rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.” [Colossians 2:6-8.] It is
here that the great danger comes in. A worldly spirit and worldly
practices have taken the place that Christ should have in the life. “For in
Him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. And ye are
complete in Him, which is the head of all principality and power. ...
Buried with Him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with Him
through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised Him from the
dead.” [Verses 9, 10, 12.] {Ms78-1905, par. 8} (1905)
https://egwwritings.org/?ref=en_Ms78-1905.8&para=10378.14

My heavenly Father, imbue us with the Spirit. Let the Holy Spirit of
God rest upon us, my Saviour. I know that Thou art here, because we
have Thy promise. And now we ask Thee that Thou wouldest reveal
Thyself in softening and subduing the hearts of these people. O, let the
hearts be broken before Thee, and let self die, and Jesus Christ take the
throne of the heart, and Jesus Christ work through the instruments, that
they can be one with Christ in God; and then they have all this power
that was granted to them, when they were laid down into the water and
baptized. And if they have forgotten it, O let them repeat the work, to
be baptized and take hold of the heavenly powers again. Give us power
to be baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the
Holy Ghost. And there with these three mighty powers promised, how
can our faith be a nonentity, how can our faith be feeble and
weak? {Ms142-1906 (August 18, 1906) par. 50} (1906.08.18)

Those who have been baptized and have taken their stand on the
Lord’s side, separating from the enemy, have pledged themselves to the
service of God. When you went down into the water, and were
baptized in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,
these three great powers of heaven pledged themselves to give you
power and grace to resist every temptation to dishonor God. When you
rose from the water, you represented the resurrection of Christ. {Lt32-

Verse 10. Now that is a wonderful promise. I am determined to keep

His commandments and abide in His love, and every soul of us must do
this if we answer to the vows of our baptism. Here we were baptized to
be dead unto the world and its sinful propensities, when we offered
ourselves in baptism. Then the baptism took place in the name of the
Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost, the three great
powers in heaven. These powers we have taken hold of. If we are dead
to sin and to the distractions of the world, we will not be anxious to
dress just like the world, to talk just like the world, because there is a
distinction. You are drawing from the Source, and the Father and the
Son and the Holy Ghost is pledged to every soul that will lay right hold
upon His grace—that will pray, that will sacrifice, that will cut off these
hindrances that shut the heart to the suggestions of Jesus Christ. Now
we want every soul of us to be in the position that we are men and
women of prayer. {Ms182-1907 (May 11, 1907) par. 10} (1907.05.11)

“Baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the

heavenly Powers are obligated if we will place ourselves in right
relation to God, according to the best of our accountability; if we will
watch against the temptations of the enemy; if we will resist the devil,
that he shall flee from us, if we guard our appetite—man is to do that
which he can do for himself. And when he goes down into the water to
be baptized and raised up out of the water he is to live a new life, and
place himself so these three great Powers can cooperate with Him and

[2 Peter 1] Verse 4. “Divine nature.” It was promised to us at our

baptism. We were buried with Christ by baptism, and raised to live in
newness of life—not the same old life, and to go right on patching up
an experience that is defective every day. No, we want the holiness of
the three great Powers that are pledged to keep us if we will comply
with the conditions. But they cannot keep us unless we do. {Ms183-

Study the Word of God, and here it says, verse 5. “All diligence”—not
a quarter nor a half nor two-thirds, but all diligence. If you are careless
in this matter of what kind of a character you manifest, you may depend
that God and Jesus Christ will not come to you while you have the
precious Word and you feel independent and go on your own judgment
and do just as you please. No, you cannot, you cannot

[Isaiah 58] Verse 7. Now, every soul that claims to believe in Christ
is to be a partaker of the divine nature, His nature which they accepted
when they were led down into the water, when they were baptized in
the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. What
does that mean? They have extended their service. They here were led
down into the water, and three great heavenly powers were vouched
to care for them, to work for them, if they carry out the principles, come
out from the world and be separate, and do not be just as they were
before they professed to be followers of Christ. What evidence has He
given you of the work that He requires every one of us to do? {Ms186-

“Ye have not chosen Me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you,

unto God to bear fruit. Was this not our experience when we were led
down into the water and baptized in the name of the Father, and of
the Son, and of the Holy Ghost? What did that mean?—It meant that
the three great powers in heaven were pledged to keep us so long as
we remain one with Christ, united to the vine. {Ms37-1908 (March 10,

The three dignitaries and powers of heaven (1901)

Every opportunity, every advantage, every privilege, has been given
to us to gain a rich Christian experience; but we do not learn everything
all at once. There must be a growth. Many, having learned a little in
school, think they are ready to graduate. They think they know about all
that is worth knowing. We are not to think that as soon as we are
baptized we are ready to graduate from the school of Christ. When we
have accepted Christ, and in the name of the Father, and of the Son,
and of the Holy Spirit have pledged ourselves to serve God, the
Father, Christ, and the Holy Spirit—the three dignitaries and
powers of heaven—pledge themselves that every facility shall be given
to us if we carry out our baptismal vows to “come out from among
them, and be ... separate, ... and touch not the unclean thing.” When we
are true to our vows, He says, “I will receive you.” [2 Corinthians
6:17.] {Ms85-1901 (August 30, 1901) par. 4} (1901.08.30)

The three highest authorities of the heavenly courts and of the
universe (1902-1907)

We took our baptismal vows in the presence of the three highest

authorities of the heavenly courts—the Father, the Son, and the
Holy Ghost. We solemnly pledged ourselves before all Heaven to die
to sin and to walk in newness of life. Have we been working out our
own salvation with fear and trembling? or have we been living a
worldly life, indulging in sin? The apostle’s instruction is: “Seek those
things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.
Set your affections on things above, not on things on the earth. For ye
are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. When Christ, who is
our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with Him in glory.”
[Verses 1-4.] {Ms87-1902 (June 8, 1902) par. 36} (1902.06.08)
https://egwwritings.org/?ref=en_Ms87-1902.36&para=7979.49

You have pledged the gospel standard yourself before the three
highest authorities in the heavenly courts at your baptism, that
whatever shall interfere with your spiritual and eternal interest you will
be dead to its plausibility. The Bible and the Bible alone is our great
reformer to make good our baptismal vows. No substitute or reasoning
can evade this pledge. You are to come out and be separate, and not to
act in harmony with lawyers’ schemes, but to stand for truth and
righteousness. Whatever is inconsistent in the action of the
righteousness of Christ in any case is not in accordance with the
baptismal vows. Those who ignore and disregard the teachings of
God’s Word and its supreme authority violate their baptismal vows and
the teachings of the Word to save a lost world; for it never can be done
in harmony with truth and righteousness and the reformatory power
promised by the Father and Son and Holy Spirit, while men are
voluntarily linking themselves with the agents and ministers of
unrighteousness. {Lt367-1905, par. 10} (1905)
https://egwwritings.org/?ref=en_Lt367-1905.10&para=12835.16

“Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am

not come to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven
and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law,
till all be fulfilled. Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least
commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in
the kingdom of heaven (by the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost):
but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great
(by the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost) in the kingdom of
heaven.” [Verses 17-19.] The three highest authorities in the
universe, with all the heavenly family, shall call great, in the fullest
sense of the term, those who do and teach the commandments of our
heavenly Father. {Ms129-1907 (October 11, 1906) par. 28}

The baptismal service was conducted with great calmness and

solemnity. The hymns chosen for the occasion were well selected. Elder
Simpson’s face was shining, and the countenances of the whole
company reflected the light of cheerful obedience. On profession of
faith, the willing candidates were baptized in the name of the Father,
the Son, and the Holy Spirit—the three heavenly authorities who
pledge themselves to help in times of necessity those who take part in
this ordinance. Henceforth the candidates must show themselves dead
to the world and alive unto God. “Ye are dead, and your life is hid with
Christ in God.” [Colossians 3:3.] They are to seek God for the new life
in Christ. {Lt396-1906 (December 26, 1906) par. 6} (1906.12.26)

I have seen in Christ matchless charms. And yet I have thought, how
few will risk themselves on the promise! “Now therefore go ye,
teaching them.” [Verse 19.] “Christ.” O there is a power in these words!
When you gave yourself up to die to the world, you were baptized in
the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. The
three great authorities of heaven that are pledged, pledged to be with
you, will carry you through the temptations and trials that there are in
this life, if you will only be obedient. The Word, we must keep the
Word. “Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have
commanded you and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the
world.” [Verse 20.] Now, I take Christ at His word. And I have been at
work more or less in a limited manner at first, but I have gone very
widely over the world to carry the message that He has given to
me. {Ms177-1907 (April 27, 1907) par. 15} (1907.04.27)

three highest powers in heaven were pledged that every one should
keep the promise of their baptism. “Ye are dead, and your life is hid

disposition of mind. Is there no change in our disposition when we
claim to be children of God? We are to be like Christ. We are to follow
Christ. We are to be partakers of Christ. Yes, we are to live Christ’s

The ceremony of baptism is a most solemn one. Men and women

how shall He not with Him freely give us all things?” [Romans 8:32.]
Before the universe of heaven the plan was set forth whereby man
might again come into right relation with God. To as many as would
receive Christ as their light and their salvation would be given power to
become the sons of God. Before that Gift could be bestowed, the
Church of heaven was stirred to its unfathomable depths. Of all His
infinite resources, God gave the whole. The three representative
powers of the Godhead, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,
were pledged to carry out God’s plan for the salvation of the lost race.
Thus fully did the Lord engage the heavenly universe in the work of
redemption. How few understand and appreciate this infinite
sacrifice! {Ms139-1907 (June 18, 1907) par. 10} (1907.06.18)

The threefold powers in the heavenly world (1904)

The open path, the safe path of walking in the way of His
commandments, is a path from which there is no safe departing. And
when men follow their own human theories dressed up in soft,
fascinating representations, they make a snare in which to catch souls.
In the place of devoting your powers to theorizing, Christ has given you
a work to do. His commission is, Go through and make disciples of all
nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son,
and of the Holy Ghost. Before the disciples shall compass the
threshold, there is to be the imprint of the sacred name, baptizing the
believers in the name of the threefold powers in the heavenly world.
The human mind is impressed in this ceremony, the beginning of the
Christian life. It means very much. The work of salvation is not a small
matter, but so vast that the highest authorities are taken hold of by the
expressed faith of the human agency. {Ms45-1904 (May 14, 1904) par.
16} (1904.05.14)

The Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit are promised to
us (1907)

O, I have been laboring in San Francisco. I have been laboring in

Oakland, since these awful fires, and the record is horrible. I expect
another rod will pass through that will extinguish life. They had an
opportunity to repent, and have established their saloons. There is a
drugged liquor that makes men mad, and they know nothing of what
they are about, and the work goes on to poison society. I never will
close my lips while these things are in existence. I will speak in the
name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, and I long to see the salvation of
God. I long to see the church what she should be. The Father and the
Son and the Holy Ghost are promised to us. Jesus came here to take
human nature upon Himself, and here He was to live a spotless
life. {Ms183-1907 (May 12, 1907) par. 32} (1907.05.12)

Worship to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit (1906)

Now a little point. As the saints in the kingdom of God are accepted
in the beloved, they hear: “Come, ye blessed of My Father, inherit the
kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.” [Matthew
25:34.] And then the golden harps are touched, and the music flows all
through the heavenly host, and they fall down and worship the Father
and the Son and the Holy Spirit. And then what? What next did I see?
One meets another; and they say, as they fall right upon their necks with
their faces shining with the glory of God, “It was you, it was you that
brought the truth to me, and I would not hear it at first, but, O I am so
glad.” Now that will be acted all through the heavenly courts,
thanksgiving and praise to God for those that have been the means of
winning others to the truth, that they should come and have an interest
for them, and then they are united among the saved. O what a meeting!
what a meeting! {Ms139-1906 (July 24, 1906) par. 32} (1906.07.24)
