TRAVEL EXPERIENCE OF A TRANSPORTATION HUB
I HAVE TRAVELLED A LOT IN MUMBAI IN DIFFERENT MEANS OF TRANSPORT, BUT
THE MOST THAT I HAVE TRAVELLED IS FROM LOCAL TRAIN AND MOST
FREQUENTLY USED STATION BY ME IS BORIVALI RAILWAY STATION.

PLATFORM PLAN

SO, I WOULD LIKE TO SHARE MY EXPERIENCE REGARDING THIS STATION AND


ALL THE ADJOINING TRANSPORT FACILITIES AROUND IT.
MY EXPERIENCE TO TRAVEL HERE HAS BEEN SATISFACTORY.
SO, I WANT TO SHARE MY EXPERIENCE/OBSERVATION IN THE FORM OF S.W.O.T
ANALYSIS -:
STRENGTH-
• IT IS THE BIGGEST RAILWAY STATION ON WESTERN LINE OF MUMBAI, SO
PEOPLE LIVING AROUND BORIVALI CAN ACCESS THE STATION MUCH
EASILY AS THERE ARE LOT OF ENTRIES
• IT IS BELIEVED TO BE ONE OF THE BLIND-FRIENDLY RAILWAY STATION.

• THE STATION IS DENSELY CONNECTED THROUGH SKY WALKS AND


BRIDGES, MAKING IT EASY FOR A COMMUTER TO REACH FROM ONE
END TO THE OTHER.
• THERE ARE 10 PLATFORMS ACROSS THE STATION MAKING THE
FREQUENCY OF TRAINS VERY HIGH, WORKING 18-20 HOURS A DAY.
• THERE ARE 6 ESCALATORS AND MORE THAN 4 LIFTS IN THE WHOLE
STATION, GIVING COMMUTERS AND SENIOR CITIZENS SIGN OF RELIEF.
• AT BOTH THE SIDES THERE ARE BUS STOPS, SHARE AUTO STANDS MAKING
A COMMUTER AN EASY TRAVEL FROM STATION TO HOME/ OFFICE/
COLLEGE ETC.
• THERE HAS BEEN DESIGNED A LUSH GREEN LANDSCAPE BED AT THE
ENTRANCE OF THE STATION MAKING IT APPEALING AND ASTHETIC WHILE
ALSO SPREADING MESSAGE OF GO GREEN (GO TREES).

• THERE ARE GIANT ECO-FANS PLACED ON FEW PLATFORMS, GIVING


COOLNESS IN THIS HOT AND HUMID CITY.
• AFTER P.M MODI’S SWACHH BHARAT ABHIYAAN, BORIVALI WAS
BEAUTIFIED BY MORE THAN 500 VOLUNTEERS.

WEAKNESS-
• AS THE STATION IS TOO LONG AND HUGE, IT TAKES LOT OF TIME TO
REACH FROM ONE END TO OTHER MAKING A COMMUTER TIRED.
• THERE IS ALWAYS A LINE ON THIS STATION’S TICKET WINDOW, MAKING
LOT OF WASTAGE OF COMMUTER’S TIME.
• THE PRIVATE AUTO PICK UP AND DROP ON BOTH THE SIDES ARE
UNCLEAR AND CHAOTIC. THERE ARE LACK OF AUTOS AVAILABLE
DURING THE PEAK TIME.
• THE TRAFFIC OUTSIDE THE STATION IS IN A BAD CONDITION DUE TO
POORLY MAINTAINED ROADS, HAWKERS AND ILLEGAL PARKINGS.
• FEW BRIDGES INSIDE THE STATION ARE CONNECTED WITH VERY NARROW
STAIRCASES RESULTING IN ACCUMULATION OF CROWDS.
• STATION NEEDS SANITATION FACILITIES.

OPPORTUNITIES-
• HAVING A HUGE AREA AND LENGTH, CENTRAL RAILWAY LINE TRACKS
SHALL BE PROPOSED MAKING IT MORE DYNAMIC AND CONNECTED TO
OTHER STATIONS TOO.
• THERE IS ENOUGH SPACE TO ARRANGE A PRIVATE AUTO STAND ON
BOTH THE SIDES MAKING THE TRAFFIC SMOOTH AND LESS CHAOTIC.
• GIVING A DEDICATED SPACE TO HAWKERS WHO CURRENTLY STAND
OUTSIDE THE STATION THAT WILL HELP IN BETTER CROWD FLOW.
• HAVING ENOUGH SPACE, SANITATION FACILITES SHOULD BE BUILT INSIDE
THE STATION.

THREATS-
• THE UNDERGROUND WALKING SUBWAY IS IN UNHYGENIC CONDITION
AND NEEDS REPAIR.
• THE OVERCROWDING ON THE PLATFORMS BEFORE THE TRAIN ARRIVES
COULD LEAD TO ACCIDENTS AND INJURIES.
• STATION NEEDS BETTER SECURITY CHECK AND POLICE ALL THE TIME TO
AVOID ANY KIND OF ILLEGAL ACTIVITIES.
