3.0 PROBLEM STATEMENT

There are thousands of pest control products in the market that promise to deliver results.
At best these tend to be costly, messy and miserably ineffective. At worst, they can end
up provide dangerous for human being, putting our health at risk. While pesticides are
useful for the control of various pests, many of them are hazardous chemicals. They are
hazardous because they can poison the land, the water and the air. When people using
pesticides become careless they run the risk of poisoning themselves, other people and
animals and plants. Pesticides are poisons and, unfortunately, they can harm more than
just the “pests” at which they are targeted. They are toxic, and exposure to pesticides can
cause a number of health effects.

In addition, there are some pest repellent equipment at market that promotes pest control.
But are they really works well to expel the pest they mention on their products. Some
equipments are just able to repel one insects but claims at the advertisement it can repel
more than that. Many available pest controller equipment are not certified by Ministry or
Organization. So, this promote a unsafe equipment to the consumers.

Besides that, there are some equipment at the market that need improvement. The
available equipments are compatible with all the aspects such as approved legally and no
poisonous chemical but they did not fulfill the market needs and fulfill today’s trend and
situation.

3.1 Insect Repellent Cloth

Most insect repellent cloth available nowadays have dependence on insecticides. The
main insecticides they will use is Permethrin. Permethrin is an insecticide in the
pyrethroid family. Permethrin is used in a number of ways to control insects. Products

25
containing Permethrin may be used in public health mosquito control programs.
According to M.Tisch (2004), skin irritation, including itching, swelling, and redness,
may occur with treatment with Permethrin. If overdosed it has serious symptoms such as
passing out or trouble breathing. Irritative or allergic reactions have also been reported for
synthetic pyrethroids (Flannigan et al. 1985). These consist primarily of dermal
symptoms, which include itching, burning, and paresthesias, as well as respiratory and
ocular signs of irritation. These are the problems facing by consumers that they are scared
to interact with chemical. Although the current available insect repellent cloth are not
dangerous and the dosage of Permethrin is low, but if exposed regularly it can harm our
health.

To overcome this problem, our company will create a eco-friendly insect repellent
cloth. The insecticides used will be from plant extracts. We will be using the extract of
Neem Leaves (Azadirachta indica), Lemon Grass (Cymbopogon citratus), Rosemary
(Salvia rosmarinus), Clove (Syzygium aromaticum) and Catnip (Nepeta cataria) – also
known as Misai Kucing among locals of Malaysia. These are the natural elements that
will not bring harms to human being. According to G.Jilani (1991), using a natural
product and non-chemical will bring lesser harm to human health.

3.2 Ultrasonic Insect Repellent

Most Ultrasonic Insect Repellent devices sold on the market today have frequencies that
are said not to be harmful to human health. However, to date no such certification or
validation has been made by any seller or manufacturer. Besides that, some device just
emits sound and didn’t work as a insect repellent device. Furthermore, the current
available Ultrasonic Insect Repellent has only one or two function on it. The most of them
are depended on electricity. There is portable Ultrasonic Insect Repellent available on
market but the battery is not sustainable for long term of period. According to John
O’Hara and J.Monte Ross (2007), says that animal repelling devices should be always be

26
upgraded from time to time as the animal will be adaptive and mutate from environment.
So the old device will not function properly.

Studies designed to investigate the efficacy of ultrasonic pest repellents have shown
mixed results. One extensive test performed by Kansas State University in 2002 found
that the devices were effective at repelling some insects, such as crickets, but the same
devices had little effect on cockroaches. Ants and spiders were unaffected by any of the
devices. Of the pests that seem to be bothered by the noise, some tests have shown that
they soon become habituated as they realize the noise is harmless. Even models proven
successful in tests are unlikely to perform adequately in real-world situations, where
signal strength rapidly diminishes and can be blocked by walls and furniture. There are
the problems facing by the consumers nowadays. They couldn’t get a good Ultrasonic
Insect Repellent devices on the market.

These are the problems facing by the consumers nowadays. They couldn’t get a
good Ultrasonic Insect Repellent devices on market. Our newly invented Ultrasonic
Insect Repellent are just a way better than the previous version of the product in market.
We at Victory will ensure that the Ultrasonic Pest Repellent at our company with the
endorsement and certification of the Department of Occupational Safety and Health and
the Ministry of Health Malaysia. This is one of the forms of social responsibility and our
duty to the safety and health of the community, especially the users of our products.
There will be torch light on this device for emergency use. We will be adding USB port
on the device to allow the device charge by power cable or power bank. Besides that, the
USB port will read pen-drive to allow users listen to songs while using it for hiking or
any activities with the help of audio jack. There will be also LCD screen showing time,
date and battery percentage. It’s very useful when you have a power cut at your home or
no electricity area. Faster charging because these are highly powered devices. It can be
recharged easily by attaching to any USB port. Power banks are always giving freedom to
use our Ultrasonic Insect Repeller without worrying about its battery. No more trouble
while using on battery down condition.

27
3.3 Hudson Express Motorised Spray Can

Vector control is the key intervention for global malaria control and elimination efforts. It
is critical for the reduction and, ultimately, for the interruption of malaria transmission.
According to Global Malaria Action Plan (GMAP), currently, the two most common
vector control interventions are long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) and indoor residual
spraying. Together, these account for almost 60% of global investment in malaria control.
According to the database of Ministry Of Health, most Health District Office that control
Malaria Outbreak will be using Hudson Spray X-Pert Spray Can as they can measure the
pesticides according to the volume of the spray can.

The existing Hudson Spray X-Pert Spray Can that widely used is very non-user
friendly. Where, at the beginning of usage, the tank cover should be opened by rotating
the handle horizontally. After that the water should be put into the tank up to a gallon
level. Prior to that, the outer pack of pesticides (75gram) should be opened from the edges
and to be put into the sprayer barrel with the water should be added to the tank up to 2
gallons / 7.5 liters equal to 3/4 tank. And once the tank cover is neatly closed, the sprayer
pump must be manually pumped to a pressure of 55 psi. More complicated the spray
barrel needs to be shaken by turning it up and down 5 times. Also, the user of this existing
pump have to manually check that the spray output on the nozzle and need to ensured that
the output spray is in fan-shaped and horizontally.

Our newly invented Hudson X-Pert Motorised Spray Can will be equipped with a
motor. This mean there will be no manual pumping to set the pressure and users will
continually use the spray can until the content finish. This will help save the time for
spraying and save some energy and time. We will be adding motor to the can to maintain
the pressure all through the spray process and no manual pumping which is more user

28
friendly. Another innovation that ergonomically benefiting the users is just set the
digitalised control pressure on the motor and can start the spraying proses. The motor was
portable, can last for 5 hours and electric rechargeable. Convenient to operate as it is light
in weight, water proof, small and easy to carry.

29
4.0 PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

4.1 DESCRIPTION OF PRODUCT

Our company has come out with new idea of product innovation. We will be inventing
Ultrasonic Insect Repellent, Eco-Friendly Insect Repellent Cloth and Motorized Hudson
X-Pert Spray Can. Our products are redesigned from existing product in market for a
good and better service for the consumer.

4.1.1 Ultrasonic Insect Repellent

Ultrasonic pest repellent are electronic devices that emit high-frequency sounds designed
to repel, kill or injure household pests, such as insects and rodents. Mostly all the device
are being tested at lab and international sales will be tested by the U.S. Federal Trade
Commission (FTC). Rodents and insects can transmit salmonella, hantavirus and other
diseases if left unchecked, as well as cause significant building damage. Cockroach
infestation, which is arguably the most pervasive and hard-to-eliminate type of pest
infestation, especially in urban areas and industrial and commercial kitchens, is evidenced
by the pest's droppings, which are pepper-like specs, typically found in kitchen
cupboards, as well as their egg sacs, which are often spotted in hard-to-reach locations,
such as cracks and crevices in kitchen cabinets and drains, and behind dishwashers and
refrigerators. Ultrasonic pest repellent are claimed to eliminate even these types of
household pests.

The ultrasonic devices are plugged into a home’s electrical receptacle outlets which then
purportedly emit high-frequency sounds that are disruptive to pests. The sound
supposedly causes a physiological response known as audiogenic seizure response, which
is characterized by non-directional running, convulsions, and possibly death from cerebral
hemorrhage. The theory behind the devices is that confused rodents and insects when the

30
disruption prevents them from gathering food, breeding, building nests or
communicating. Ultrasonic devices are popular and appealing to consumers because of
their ease of use and the fact that they are silent to human ears and allegedly eliminate the
need for traps and poison.

Most of the Ultrasonic Insect Repellent that are selling now a days have only one or two
functions on its device. And the main focus of the many devices are to placed in house
and in a fixed position. Our Ultrasonic Insect Repellent will be innovated with extra
features and functions for the confortable use of consumer.

Safety and Health and the Ministry of Health Malaysia to ensure the safety to the public.

4.1.2 Eco-Friendly Insect Repellent Cloth

Innovations in clothing that prevent insect bites have primarily come from the United
States military. Mosquito-borne disease is a major concern for military around the globe.
Our country Malaysia itself facing many Mosquito-borne disease such as Dengue Fever,
Malaria and so on. The Insect Repellent Cloth usually will be treated with Permethrin.
Permethrin is an insecticide in the pyrethroid family. Pyrethroids are synthetic chemicals
that act like natural extracts from the chrysanthemum flower. Permethrin is used in a
number of ways to control insects. Products containing Permethrin may be used in public
health mosquito control programs. They may be used on ornamental lawns, in structures
and buildings, and on clothing. Permethrin can affect insects if they eat it or touch it.
Permethrin affects the nervous system in insects, causing muscle spasms, paralysis and
death. Permethrin is more toxic to insects than it is to people and dogs. This is because
insects can't break it down as quickly as people and dogs.

While Permethrin will repel some mosquitoes, treated clothing most effectively works by
killing the mosquitoes landing and trying to bite through the fabric. Clothing treated with
Permethrin has been shown to protect against mosquitoes and ticks, as well as other biting
insects and mites. For these studies, clothing was generally soaked in solutions or sprayed
with insecticides to ensure adequate protection.

Our innovations on Insect Repelling Cloth did not use Permethrin as the insecticide but
we use the natural ingredients to repel the insects. We will be using the extract of Neem

33
Leaves (Azadirachta indica), Lemon Grass (Cymbopogon citratus), Rosemary (Salvia
rosmarinus), Clove (Syzygium aromaticum) and Catnip (Nepeta cataria) – also know as
Misai Kucing among locals of Malaysia. These are the natural elements that will not bring
harms to human being. According to R.C Saxena (1989), says that Neem are the best
plant that change the behavioral and physiological effects on insects. Thus, when there is
a scent of Neem, insects will not come closer to the source.

A.O. Oyedele et all (2002) says that lemongrass is an effective item to repel insects
especially in tropical weather. In his study, lemongrass extract were tested on people skin
and there is less mosquito and bug bites on them. S.E Sharawi et all (2013), says that the
usage of Rosemary and Clove with correct extract concentration can repel insects and
toxify them. Their study also shows that Rosemary and Clove have a promising botanical
insecticides. Based on their lab study, insects have been exposed to the extract of
Rosemary and Clove at certain concentration. At high concentration of exposure it shows
that many insects change their behaviour and not confortable.

Last but not least, according to C.J Peteson et all (2007), says that Catnip plants is a
repellent to insects such as German cockroach, House Fly, Yellow Fever Mosquitos and
certain bugs. The plant extract will make the insects uncomfortable. Based on the theory
above, it is clearly shows that these plants have the capability to repel insects and not
harmful to human beings. So, our innovations on this Insect Repelling Clothes are to use
eco-friendly insecticide.

4.1.3 Hudson X-Pert Motorized Spray Can

35
Malaria remains a public health problem in Malaysia. The National Strategic Plan for
Malaria Elimination aims to eradicate malaria from Peninsular Malaysia by 2015, and
from Malaysia Borneo by 2020. Although the number of reported malaria cases has
decreased since the implementation of the malaria control program, malaria remains a
public health problem in Malaysia especially in Sabah, Sarawak and in the interior central
regions of Peninsular Malaysia.

At the moment, the weapons needed against malaria include an efficient way of detecting
the disease, finding out the exact species causing the infection and since malaria is a
mosquito-borne disease and efficient vector control program.

One of the method to control Malaria is by doing Indoor Residual Spray. Indoor Residual
Spraying or IRS is the process of spraying the inside of dwellings with an insecticide to
kill mosquitoes that spread malaria. A dilute solution of insecticide is sprayed on the
inside walls of certain types of dwellings. Mosquitoes are killed or repelled by the spray,
preventing the transmission of the disease. According to World Health Organization, in
2008, 44 countries employed IRS as a malaria control strategy and the number of Malaria
cases seems to be dropped.

The main equipment used for the IRS is Hudson X-Pert Spray Can. But the can is
manually handled. When users want to start spraying, they have to pump the can
according to the pressure needed. While spraying, when the pressure dropped, users have
to stop the work and start pump to reset the pressure.

Our newly invented product will called Hudson X-Pert Motorized Spray Can. We will be
adding motor to the can to maintain the pressure all through the spray process and no
manual pumping. Users will just set the pressure needed on the motor and can start the
spraying proses.

4.2 FORMS OF INNOVATION

4.2.1 Product Innovation

When people think of innovation, often, they’re thinking of product innovation. Product
innovation can come in three different forms. First, the development of a new product,
such as the Fitbit or Amazon’s Kindle. Second, an improvement of the performance of the
existing product, such as an increase in the digital camera resolution of the iPhone 11.
Third, a new feature to an existing product, such as power windows to a car. Drivers of

38
product innovation might be technological advancements, changes in customer
requirements, or outdated product design.

Our innovation is categorized in Product Innovation. For the Eco-Friendly Insect

Repellent Cloth, we will be improving the product by using eco-friendly and harmless
insecticides on the cloth which the insecticide used is derived from plant extract. The
existing Insect Repelling Cloth are treated with Permethrin which is a chemical that
maybe bring harm to human being if exposed for a long period. But our product is an eco-
friendly product and will not bring harm to humans. Besides that, the product will be lab
tested, allergy tested and will be approved by Ministry Of Health and Ministry of
Agriculture and Agro-based Industry. This can be a plus point for selling this product.

Next for the Ultrasonic Insect Repellent, we will be adding some new features to an
existing product in the market. For example, currently existing Ultrasonic Insect
Repellent doesn’t have time display screen, USB port and headphone jack. Our product
will includes these specification for our customer. These features been added to target
outdoor sport customer such as Hikers, Joggers and also Night Shift Working Guards. By
adding these extra features, users can not only be repelled from insects but also can listen
to songs while doing their activity.

As for Hudson X-Pert Motorized Spray Can, the current available Hudson X-Pert Spray
Can is pumped manually. To ease the work and save some time and energy, we will be
adding a motor to set up the pressure and help maintain the pressure during spray. By this
users also will not have to stop half way to set up the pressure again as the pressure will
be maintain automatically.

4.2 Type Of Innovation

39
Innovation can be a confusing topic because there are so many different kinds of
innovations out there and everyone seems to use the term differently. Most innovations
are smaller, gradual improvements on existing products, processes and services while
some innovations can be those ground-breaking technological inventions or business
models that transform industries. Because the environment and the needs of customers are
constantly changing, we need to be able to improve different areas of our business to
solve emerging problems and to keep creating new value for your customers. Knowing
what types of innovations there are for an organization to pursue can help an organization
to discover the ones that are most suitable for their business. Understanding and focusing
on the most potential ones not only helps to respond to these changing needs but also
allows us to improve our ability to grow the business.

4.4 Source Of Innovations

Sources of innovation can be defined as the supply of knowledge that an organization

utilizes to enhance innovation and achieve success in the marketplace. Innovative ideas
can come from a wide variety of different places, and companies who leave sources out of
their innovative process are significantly reducing their innovative capabilities.
Innovation sources come from many way and it be divided into internal and external
sources

 Internal Sources

44
Employees.
Our employees can be said is the main source of this innovation as the come up
with good ideas and sketches. Their idea and thinking is the contribution to this
innovation to create a eco-friendly insect repellent that’s works well, a ultrasonic
insect repellent that have multi functions and a spray can which can be motorised
to set up pressure. Without the idea and hard work of our employees, these
innovation will not take place.

Internal Reserch and Department.

As we know, our Research and Department is actively finding a solution to the
occurring current problems. We are using our employees knowledge and idea to
create a pesticides made from plant extract which will not bring harm to mankind.
Our laboratory provide a good equipment and latest technology for the researchers
to work on this innovations. Besides that, our engineering department is working
hard to set up circuit and component that allows our ultrasonic insect repellent to
work with multi-functional functions and an innovation of motor to attached with
Hudson X-pert Spray Can.

 External Sources

Customers/users.
Since customers are the ones to provide the final evaluation of products and
services and well as drive sales, it is no wonder that they are the most fruitful
source for ideas. We always care about our customer value. As we will identify
their needs and complains through social media and mails. Users also one of the
main source of this innovation as they give feedback on the current product on
market and give suggestions to improve it. Those feedback and suggestion if are

45
acceptable and can be accomplished, we will make an innovation. For example,
many customers are afraid to use chemical pesticides. As an alternative, our
company innovate a eco-friendly pesticides made from plant extracts. Besides
that, many customer gave suggestions on the insect repelling that could have
multi-function to enable them save mobile phone battery. So we invented a
ultrasonic insect repellent that have multi functions. Furthermore, many workers
complain have back pain when pump manually the Hudson X-Pert Spray Can.
This give us idea to innovate a motorized spray can that no need manual pumping.

Competitors.
To survive in this era of globalization, we as a growing company need to compete
with many competitors that sell similar product outside. The innovation of our
three product which Is Eco-Friendly Insect Repellent Cloth, Multi-Function
Ultrasonic Insect Repellent and Motorized Hudson X-Pert Spray Can is boost to
our company growth as there isn’t much product alike in current market. So, by
this we will be a step higher from our competitors. Competing organizations and
firm leaders are two other underutilized sources for innovation. Attending industry
conferences, exhibitions and tradeshows is a good way to keep aware of what the
competition is developing or researching. Businesses can often use these ideas and
append or modify them to create new products themselves. On a higher level,
business leaders should endeavor to stay well-connected and networked with other
leaders in their industry as this is yet another avenue for gathering ideas.

4.5 Product Classification
