CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of Research

Hickey (2014)defined that language has been a subject of serial

investigations. The complexcharacteristic ascribed to language in this paper is

informed by a consideration of types grammar, phonology and semantics through

whichlanguage can be assessed.Lawson (2018), Register and style usually are

situated in thesocial and stylistic aspects of language and are traditionally

considered as varietiesof language. It is an important aspect in our daily life. We

need and uselanguage everyday.

Sociolinguistics plays an important role in communication. Based on

Brugger (2014),throughlanguage people are able to express their feeling, ideas, or

intention clearly. Theyare also able to get information easily by reading

newspaper, watching televisionor follow the popular home page in Instagram. In

short, it is the main andimportant tool in communication.

In perspective of Isaac (2014),states that register is a variety of a language

used for a particularpurpose or in a particular setting This simple presentation

contains two importantvariables: purpose and setting. It suggests that the

resources of a language can bevariously used based on the goal of communication

as well as the speech context. In other words, it is the summarize of a text’s subject

matter, itspurpose, its mode or essentially, spoken or written, its genre or in

another meaning the type of text it is and the last is the relationship that exists

1

between its participants that consists of namely, the writer orspeaker and the

audience. These factors all work together to influences the choices the language

users make when we use to construct the discourse itself. In sociolinguistics there

is language form such as noun, verb, abbreviation, compound, and adjective.

Beside of that, there is linguistic register used types such as frozen, formal,

consultative, casual, and intimate.

In this research, the researcher focuses on sociolinguistic analysis study

about the linguistic register as a kind of language variation. The researcher uses

the official fan page ofLiverpool FC in Instagram because we can find so many

register inthis page and we can get a new knowledge about that. It finds alot of

registers used by the buyer and customer in trading transaction.

Liverpool FC is also known as the Reds is an English football club based

in the City of Liverpool. Liverpool FCis currently participants of the English

Premier League. Liverpool FCis also defending champions of the 2018-2019

UEFA Champions League season. Liverpool was founded on March 15, 1892 as a

result of a feud between the Everton FC Committee and John Houlding as the

Club President who also owned the Anfield stadium. Earlier in 1891 John

Houlding, as a tenant from Anfield Stadium, bought the land directly and

proposed increasing the rental price from £ 100 to £ 250 per year. Everton, who

has played at Anfield for seven years, rejected it and there was a feud.

in sociolinguistics study especially about Register usedin Liverpool FC

fan pages or everything deals with the topic that has been presented in this

research. It also in this research, the researcher want to uses

sociolinguistics analysis in the way to applied it in linguistics study.

3

For other researchers, this will add the varieties of sociolinguistics

analysis research which until now can be said that is to do. It also be a

useful reference for students who are interested in knowing more about

register used in Liverpool FC fan pages.

2. Pedagogically

Providing input the learning materials for linguistics lecturers, it is

sociolinguisticsanalysis which is at this time have not realized yet in the

researcher’s faculty and it is hoped if that happened. It can be given even

in the wider context. Particularly for English Department students, who are

interested in sociolinguistics study.

The research is expected to be useful for other researchers and

readers in general, both theoritically and pedagogically also especially for

Suryakancana University students. The results of this research are

expected to have following benefits:

1. Sociolinguistics is the study of the link between language and society, of

language variation, and of attitudes about language Spolsky (2010).

2. Sociolinguistics is branch of anthropological linguistics that examines

how language and culture are related, and how language is used in

different social contexts (Hudson, 2011).

3. Sociolinguistics is the study of stylistic and social variation of

language Wardhaugh (2010).

4

CHAPTER II

THEORETICAL FOUNDATIONS

2.1 Language

HoweverBrugger (2014)defined that language has been a subject of serial

investigations. The complexcharacteristic ascribed to language in this paper is

informed by a consideration of types grammar, phonology and semantics through

whichlanguage can be assessed, Isaac (2014), Register and styleusually are

situated in thesocial and stylistic aspects of language and are traditionally

considered as varietiesof language. It is an important aspect in our daily life. We

need and we uselanguage everyday.

It plays an important role in communication. Based onPercy (2017),

throughlanguage people are able to express their feeling, ideas, or intention

clearly. And also can get information easily by reading newspaper, watching

televisionor follow the popular home page in Instagram. In short, it is the main

andimportant tool in communication. The study of language which pays attention

to the social aspects of language is commonly called sociolinguistics.

According to Holmes (2012) argues that a standard variety is one

which is written, and which has undergone some degree of regularization or

codification it is recognized as prestigious variety or code by a community

and it is used for functions a long side a diversity of low varieties. It is further

stated that standard varieties are codified varieties. Codification is usually

achieved through grammars and dictionaries which record, and sometimes

pre scribed, the standard form of the language. The codification process, which

6
7

is part of the development of every standard variety, was accelerated in the

case of English by William Caxton, the first English printer. He used the

speech of London area the newly emerging standard dialect as the basis for

his translation. The most important point the emphasizes is that the

development of Standard English illustrates the three essential criteria which

characterize a standard, it was an influential or prestigious variety, it was codified

and stabilized, it was used for communication at court, for literature and for

administration. It is very interesting to take into consideration the idea proposed

by Holmes (2012), in which he states that a standard language is always a

particular dialect which has gained its special position as a result of social,

economic, and political influence. This is really in away with the language

condition in Indonesia. The language situation in Indonesia is very complex due

to the various vernacular languages used by the various communities which have

different cultural background. This situation is very important to be taken into

consideration by those who involve themselves in language, particularly

sociolinguistic study. As mentioned by Holmes (2012), language varies in

three major ways which are interestingly interrelated over time, in physical

space, and socially. Language variation over time has its origins in spatial

(or regional) and social variation. All language change has its origin in variation.

The possibility of linguistic change exists as soon as a new form develops and

begins to be used alongside an existing form.

In order to avoid misunderstanding between speakers in the society

whenever the communication takes place is to understand the speech varieties.

7
8

It means that speakers must know the norms of language function.Language

function is how the speakers use their language which has already bound

by the cultural or social norms. The understanding of

thesocialnormswhichrelatetothewayhowpeopleusethecorrect language in

certaincommunication domain by recognizing who

involvesinthecommunication. In all communitiesin the world, people have standard

language to be developed as a guideline to communicate witheach other.

In perspective of Hickey (2014)register is a variety of a language used for

a particularpurpose or in a particular setting. This simple presentation contains

two importantvariables purpose and setting. It suggests that the resources of a

language can bevariously used based on the goal of communication as well as the

speech context. In other words, it is the summarize of a text’s subject matter,

itspurpose, its mode or essentially, spoken or written, its genre or in another

meaning the type of text it is and the last is the relationship that exists between its

participants that consists of namely, the writer orspeaker and the audience. These

factors all work together to influences the choices the language users make when

we use to construct the discourse itself. In this research, the researcher focuses

onsociolinguistic analysis study aboutthe register as a kind of language

variation. The writer uses the official fan page ofLiverpool FC in Instagram

because we can find so many register inthis page and we can get a new knowledge

about that. It finds alot of registers used by the buyer and customer in trading

transaction.

8
9

In this research, the researcher focuses on sociolinguistic analysis study

aboutthe register as a kind of language variation. The researcher uses the official

footballpages on Instagram because in this era a lot of people using social media

and they thinkit can makes easier to get information. Besides of that, it finds a lot

of soccer captionsregisters used in Liverpool FC fan pages, such as hat-trick, own

goal, long ball, trade, trophy and etc.

2.2Linguistics

When two or more people communicate with each other in speech, we can

call the system of communication that they employ a code. In most cases that code

will be something we may also want to call a languageClahsen, (2009). The

system is something that each speaker knows, but two very important issues for

linguists are just what that knowledge is knowledge of and how it may best be

characterizedKulo (2009).

It isthe study of language how it is put together and how it

functionsCarston & Wearing (2015). They said that the sounds are brought

together and sometimes when this happens they change their form and do

interesting things. According to Connor (2011) words are arranged in a certain

order, and sometimes the beginnings and endings of the words are changed to

adjust the meaning. Then the meaning itself can be affected by the arrangement of

words and by the knowledge of the speaker about what the hearer will understand.

Linguistics is the study of all of this. There are various branches of linguistics

which are given their own name, some of which are described below.

9
10

In linguistics, language signs are constituted of four different levels, not

just two: phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics. Semantics deals with the

meanings or what is signified, while the other three are all concerned with the

exponent Wardhaugh (2009). At the lowest level we find that everything is

composed from a small set of sounds, or when we write of letters. The part of

linguistics that deals with how words are put together into sentences is called

syntax Clahsen (2009). On the other hand, Based on view of Linton (2006).

words are not the smallest meaningful units of language. It can be said the

primary assumption shared by functional linguists has consistently been that the

forms and structures of language are adapted to, and shaped by, grammar-external

principles, namely their communicative functions. That is, since language is

fundamentally an instrumental tool, it is reasonable to assume that its structures

are informed by the structure of our experience and our cultural models of

experience Fasold & Connor-Linton (2014). Functionalists take the internal

organization of language to be a complex adaptive response to the ecological

settings in which language is found, the interactional functions which it serves,

and the full cognitive, social, and physiological properties of the human user. In

Accordance with Kulo (2009), functional linguistic research is aimed at clarifying

the relationship between linguistic form and function, and at determining the

nature of the functions which appear to shape linguistic structure, foremost among

which are facilitating effective communication and assisting cognition. Functional

linguistics has always included both scholars who are working on description and

those working on explanation.

10
11

2.3Sociolinguistics

In perspective of Yallop (2016), sociolinguistics is a developing branch of

linguistics and sociology which examines the individual and social variation of

language. It is concerned with how language use interacts with, or is affected by,

social factors such as gender, ethnicity, age or social class, for instance.According

to the sociologist Esa, et.al (2017) states that there is nothing more practical than a

good theory. It is concerned with investigating the relationships between language

and society with the goal being a better understanding of the structure of language

and of how languages function in communicationthe equivalent goal in the

sociology of language is trying to discover how social structure can be better

understood through the study of language, Lawson (2018).

There are numerous definitions of sociolinguistics. However, each of these

definitions does not fail to acknowledge that sociolinguistics has to do with

language use and a society’s response to it. Let us examine some of them

1. The study of the link between language and society, of language variation,

and of attitudes about language (Spolsky, 2010).

2. A branch of anthropological linguistics that examines how language

and culture are related, and how language is used in different social

contexts (Hudson, 2011).

3. The study of stylistic and social variation of language (Wardaugh,

2010).

4. he study of language in relation to its socio-cultural context (van

Dijk, 2009).

11
12

Some of the factors investigated by sociolinguists that can affect the way

people speak are listed below: the first is social class, It tells the position of the

speaker in the society is often measured by the level of education, parental

background, profession and their effect on syntax and lexis used by the speaker.

An important factor influencing the way of formulating sentences is,

according to many sociolinguists, the social class of the speaker. Thus, there

has been a division of social classes suggested in order to make the description

accurate. Two main groups of language users, mainly those performing non-

manual work and those with more years of education are the ‘middle class’,

while those who perform some kind of manual work are ‘working class’. The

additional terms ‘lower’ and ‘upper’ are frequently used in order to subdivide the

social classes.

The second is social context, the register of the language used depending

on changing situations: formal language in formal meetings and informal

usage in informal meetings Spolsky (2010). It is notable that people are acutely

aware of the differences in speech patterns that mark their social class and are

often able to adjust their style to the interlocutor. It is especially true for the

members of the middle class who seem eager to use forms associated with upper

class; however, in such efforts, the forms characteristic of upper class are

often overused by the middle class members. The above mentioned process

of adapting own speech to reduce social distance is called ‘convergence’.

Sometimes, when a person wants to emphasize the social distance, s/he

12
13

makes use of the process called ‘divergence’, purposefully using

idiosyncratic forms.

The third is,accordance with Brugger (2014) This is visible in the case of

the English language: British English differs from American English, or

Canadian English; Nigerian English differs from Ghanaian English; The

study of language variation is concerned with social constraints determining

language in its contextual environment (Hudson, 2014). ‘Code-switching’ is

the term given to the use of different varieties of language in different

social situations.

2.3.1 Language Form

Based on Coe, (2012), language is both a system of communication

between individuals and a social phenomenon. A subsection of this area is

anthropological linguistics which is concerned with form and use of language in

different cultures and to what extent the development of language has been

influenced by cultural environment.According to Hickey (2014), there are five

kinds of language forms that consists in sociolinguistics on this context, it is noun,

verb, adjective, compound, and abbreviation.

Noun

Based on Ardrén (2012),noun can be defined as a word used to

name a person, place, or thing. By a thing here, it means that it comprises

something which can be perceived by human senses, or that which cannot

be perceived but can be thought of. For example in online shop register,

sist, supplier, and stock

13
14

Verb

In accordance with Zlatev & Andrén (2009)verbs are the action

words in a sentence that describe what the subject is doing. Along with

nouns, verbs are the main part of a sentence or phrase, telling a story about

what is taking place. In fact, without a verb, full thoughts can’t be properly

conveyed, and even the simplest sentences, for example in online shop

register, such as keep, transfer, booking and cancel.

Adjective

In perspective of Macmillan (2011)adjective is a part of speech

which describes, identifies, or quantifies a noun or a pronoun. So

basically, the main function of an adjective is to modify a noun or a

pronoun so that it will become more specific and interesting. Instead of

just one word, a group of words with a subject and a verb, for example in

online shop register, such as ready, pending, and delay.

Compound

Based on Altakhaineh (2017)ompounds are subject to phonological

and morphological processes, which may be specific to compounds or may

be shared with other structures, whether derived words or phrases, for

example in online shop register, such as restock, all size, and sold out.

Abbreviation

14
15

Based on Cardiac (2010), states that it shortened form of a written word

or phrase used in place of the whole word or phrasefor example in online

shop register, such as PO, OL, and COD.

2.3.2 Register

Based on Solano-Flores (2010), view register in the sociolinguistic

perspective. They state that if sociolinguistics is a wide ranging term, register is

equally tough to corral. Broadly conceived, a register is a language variety viewed

with respect to its context of use Johnston (2012). A register also called

a variety of language used for a particular purpose or in a particular

communicative situation. For example, when speaking officially or in a public

setting, an English speaker may be more likely to follow prescriptive norms for

formal usage than in a casual setting for examples, might include pronouncing

words ending in and ing with a velarnasal instead of an alveolar nasal for example

"walking", not "walkin'". choosing words that are considered more "formal" such

as father vs. dad, or child vs. kid, and refraining from using words

considered nonstandard, such as ain't. Besides of that, they also argue that register

entails text and implies a relationship between text and context

In linguistics, the register is defined as the way a speaker uses language

differently in different circumstances. Think about the words you choose, your

tone of voice, even your body language. You probably behave very differently

chatting with a friend than you would at a formal dinner party or during a job

interview. These variations in formality, also called stylistic variation, are known

15
16

as registers in linguistics. They are determined by such factors as social

occasion, context, purpose, and audience.

The registers are marked by a variety of specialized vocabulary and turns

of phrases, colloquialisms and the use of jargon, and a difference in intonation and

pace; in "The Study of Language," linguist George Yule describes the function of

jargon as helping " to create and maintain connections among those who see

themselves as 'insiders' in some way and to exclude 'outsiders'."Registers are used

in all forms of communication, including written, spoken, and signed. Depending

on grammar, and tone, the register may be extremely rigid or very intimate.

Types of Linguistic Register

Some linguists say there are just two types of register that are formal and

informal. This isn't incorrect, but it is an oversimplification. Instead, most who

study language say there are five distinct registers.

The first is frozen, it is sometimes called the static register because it

refers to historic language or communication that is intended to remain

unchanged, like a constitution or prayer. Examples: The Bible, the United States

Constitution, the Bhagavad Gita, "Romeo and Juliet"

The second is formal, less rigid but still constrained, the formal register is

used in professional, academic, or legal settings where communication is expected

to be respectful, uninterrupted, and restrained. Slang is never used, and

contractions are rare. Examples: a TED talk, a business presentation, the

Encyclopedia Britannica, "Gray's Anatomy," by Henry Gray.

16
17

The third is consultative, people use this register often in conversation

when they're speaking with someone who has specialized knowledge or who is

offering advice. Tone is often respectful but may be more casual if the

relationship is longstanding or friendly. Slang is sometimes used, people may

pause or interrupt one another. Examples: the local TV news broadcast, an annual

physical, a service provider like a plumber.

The fourth, casual, this is the register people use when they're with friends,

close acquaintances and coworkers, and family. It's probably the one you think of

when you consider how you talk with other people, often in a group setting. Use

of slang, contractions, and vernacular grammar is all common, and people may

also use expletives or off-color language in some settings. Examples: a birthday

party, a backyard BBQ.

The last is intimate, linguists say this register is reserved for special

occasions, usually between only two people and often in private. Intimate

language may be something as simple as an inside joke between two college

friends or a word whispered in a lover's ear.

Fromthedefinitionsabove,wemay concludethatsociolinguisticviewsof

aspects that make register differentfrom eachother. The three aspectsare

2.5 Social Media

According to Willmot (2016), social media is a phrase that we throw

around a lot thesedays, and it is often to describe what we post on sites and apps

as we known such as  Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and others.Social

Media also is best understood as a group of new kinds of online media which

share most or all of the following characteristics:

The first is participation social, based on Crawford (2016), media encourages

contributions and feedback from everyone who is interested. It blurs the line

between media and audience. The second is openness most, based on Yusof

(2011) social media services are open to feedback and participation. They

encourage voting, comments and the sharing of information. There are rarely any

barriers to accessing and making use of content – password-protected content is

frowned on.

The third is conversation, in accordance with Salman (2011), traditional media is

about broadcast or content transmitted or distributed to an audience. It tells that

social media is better seen as a two-way conversation. The fourth is community

social, according to Zappavigna (2018), media allows communities to form

quickly and communicate effectively. Communities share common interests, such

as a love of photography, a political issue or a favorite TV show. The last is

connectedness most kinds of social media thrive on their connectedness, making

use of links to other sites, resources and people Barton, (2018)

18
19

Instagram is a free, online photo-sharing application and social network

platform that was acquired by Facebook in 2012.Instagram was started in San

Francisco by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, who initially tried creating a

platform similar to Foursquare but then turned their attention exclusively to photo

sharing. The word Instagram is an amalgam of "instant camera" and "telegram."

Based on Lim (2015) instagram is not only a tool for individuals, but also

for businesses. The photosharing app offers companies the opportunity to start a

free business account to promote their brand and products. Companies with

business accounts have access to free engagement and impression metrics.

According to Instagram's website, more than 1 million advertisers worldwide use

Instagram to share their stories and drive business results. Additionally, 60% of

people say they discover new products through the app.As with other social

networking platforms, Instagram users can like, comment on and bookmark

others' posts, as well as send private messages to their friends via the Instagram

Direct feature.

2.6 Previous Research

This research similar with previous research was conducted. The first

Erwin Ashari (2016), theentittle of article is “A Comparative Register Perspective

on Turkish Legislative Language”. He investigated the register on Turkish

Legislative while meeting interaction. He determined the discoursal features of

Turkish legislative language, and compare these features with five other registers:

scientific research articles, newspaper feature articles, television commercials,

men’s/women’s magazines, and stand-up comedy shows.

19
20

This next research similar with previous research was conducted. Warno

Edi(2014), the entitle of article is “ A Register Analysis in Online Shop Term

Facebook”. He investigated in Facebook habitual chatting when the seller and

buyer are interacting in online shop. The data are register words and phrases

included in printed material used in online shop. The data source is dialogue

between the buyer and seller in online shop

And the next previous research was conducted by Wuri Kurnia (2015), the

entitle of article is “ A Register used Among Soldier of Koramil 0809/04

Gampengrejo Kediri “ She investigated in used the ways to adapt in the

society is by using language as communication device. This will make the

society builds a group of people according to the religion, social class, and

similarity. She analyzed the kinds of register used among soldiers in informal

conversation and the meaning of each register which is used by soldiers in

informal conversation.

The next, it was conducted by Meryem Babou-Sekkal (2012), the entitle of

the article is “ A Sociolinguistic Analysis of Use and Perception of Insults “ He

investigated in the reflect the social norms that are settled to them for specific

occasions. He analyzed the that each speech obeys the forbidden rulesto acquire

linguistic competence to speak adequately and to behave in a suitable and

acceptable manner.

The last research similar with this research was conduct ASTM

International (2010) the entitle is “ Sociolect and Register A Contrastive Analysis

of Two Kinds of Linguistics variation “ It described to investigations of social

20
21

varieties of language, deals with two major dimensions of sociolinguistic

variation that are sociolectal and registerial. It focused mainly on their

definitions, controlling variables, methodological frameworks, and typologies.

2.7Concluding Remark

In this selection, the researcher concludes this chapter regarding all

theories related to this research. Register is another complicating factor in any

study of language varieties. Registersare sets of language items associated with

discrete occupational or social groups. Surgeons, airline pilots, bank managers,

sales clerks, jazz fans, andpimps employ different registers. As Ferguson (2011)

says, People participating in recurrent communication situationstend to develop

similarvocabularies, similar features of intonation, and characteristic bits ofsyntax

and phonology that they use in these situations. This kind of variety is a

register.Ferguson adds that its ‘special terms for recurrent objects and events, and

formulaicsequences or routines, seem to facilitate speedy communication, other

featuresapparently serve to mark the register, establish feelings of rapport, and

serve other purposes similar tothe accommodation that influences dialect

formation.

CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

In this chapter discussed the reserach method which includes some

subchapters, such as research problems, research designs, source of data and data

analaysis.

3.1 Research Problems

In order to make this research easier to solve, the researcher studies the

particular problems of the research. This research aims to analyze sociolinguistics

method of Liverpool FC fan pages captions. In this research aims to answer the

following questions. The first aim to find out the utterances of register used in

Liverpool FC fan pages captions and second to describe the meaning of register

used in Liverpool FC fan pages captions.

3.2 Research Design

The method of this research is qualitative descriptive method, It means

that in this research, the method to told the content of Liverpool Fc fan pages

caption by described. It is a method that the researcher have some register used

are identified by focus on process, understanding the meaningand the researcher

primary the data collections and analysis. In this research, the researcher analyzed

the Sociolinguistics Analysis of Register Used in Liverpool FC fan pages Caption

Qualitative research approach provides researchers with an in-depth of

view of particular environment and setting to draw conclusion regarding various

contextual factors that affect interpretations of how the participants behave and act

in the authentic context Archambault(2016). This approach can provide an

22
23

expressive, narrative description of a social or human experience within a natural

setting Cresswel (2013).

3.3 Data Sources

This sources of the data was collected by Liverpool FC fan pages season

2019/2020 on Instagramto make this reseach more complete, the researcher uses

some steps which are mentioned and explained as follows:

3.3.1 Searching Instagram Account

As the first step of collecting the data, the researcher uses Instagram and

searching a Liverpool FC fan pages Instagram account next, the reseracher look

for the Caption of Liverpool from the Instagram which include to register

used, and finally found the Captions, with the name “ Liverpool FC “ which

available blue sign. There are some reasons why the researcher choose this

research, to make easier between the audiences and with the club itself,

3.3.2 Searching the Captions

After the Liverpool Instagram account have been found, the researcher

focused to find the captions that consists register used in that fan pages account to

analyzed the club update news captions 2019/2020

3.4 Data Collection

The technique of data collections used in this research was descriptive

qualitative analysis with using manual technique that using some medias likes

Google and Instagram. Firstly, the researcher use google to find the related

materials that will become to previouse studies in general. Secondly, the

23
24

researcher open Instagram account of Liverpool FC fan pages to know the club

update news captions 2019/2020

3.5 Data Analysis

This study used the interpretivist qualitative methodology Corbin &

Strauss (2012).Qualitative data analysis is defined as working with data which

includesorganizing, classifying, synthesizing, and understanding the data, and also

determining the data that presented. For this reasons, the researcher taken several

steps. Firstly, it is identification, it means that it is identifying the sources.

Secondly, it is classification,it means that it classify the data. Thirdly, it is
