Chapter 2 - Motion in One Dimension

Problem 14
Question
A train started from rest and moved with constant acceleration. At one time it
was traveling at 33.0 m/s, and 160 m farther on it was traveling at 54.0 m/s.
Calculate (a) the acceleration, (b) the time required to travel the 160 m, (c) the
time required to attain the speed of 33.0 m/s, and (d) the distance moved from
rest to the time the train had a speed of 33.0 m/s.

Answer
If we define v1 and v2 to be the velocities at each respective measurement, x1 as
the distance moved from rest until the first measurement, and d as the distance
moved between measurements, we can solve for the acceleration. We have x1 =
v12 /2a and x1 + d = v22 /2a. (a) Solving for a, we find: a = (v22 − v12 )/2d ≈ 5.7
m/s2 . (b) The time to travel distance d would be given by t = (v2 − v1 )/a =
2d/(v1 + v2 ) ≈ 3.7 s. (c) The time until the first measurement would be t1 =
v1 /a ≈ 5.7 s. (d) The initial distance moved is given by x1 = v12 /2a ≈ 95 m.
