Save the
Bees!
Some people keep their crops free of weeds or bugs, such as aphids,
by spraying them with poisons. Aphids eat crops. However, the poisons
that kill aphids also kill bees, which are very important to living things
in the environment.
Honeybees produce honey. A honeybee’s body transforms the nectar
it drinks from flowers into honey. Honey helps sweeten foods we eat.
More importantly, the honey that these bees make can help heal cuts, stop
coughing, and even has antioxidants that prevent cancer!
Worker honeybees in the hive create wax. After a worker bee is twelve
days old, its body makes a wax to help build honeycombs, which we call
beeswax. Beeswax is an ingredient in candles, crayons, shoe polish, car
wax, and lip balm for chapped lips.
Most important, bees pollinate crops. Bees travel from flower to
flower, dropping pollen that has collected on their bodies. The pollen helps
plants grow the food that animals eat. Bees help to pollinate many of the
crops on this planet!
People need to stop spraying their crops with poisons that kill bees.
Many products people use daily come from bees. They also help many
plants grow and make seeds for replanting. Without bees, the health
of the environment and the living things in it would plummet.
