ZENÚ INDIGENOUS COMMUNITY

They have been known as the zenu, for a long time they have been locating on the plains
of the Colombian Caribbean and have spoken indigenous languages that were prohibited
at the time of the Spanish conquest and, therefore, have learned to speak Spanish it is
known that they have known each other for more than two thousand years and the Zenus
have organized themselves as an amphibian people who knew
how to transform the flooded valleys of the Sinu, San Jorge and Nechi rivers into land
suitable for their housing and the cultivation of products

CONSTRUCTIONS
In their beginnings They have built high and elongated platforms known as ridges on which
they have built their houses and have generated an extensive network of channels that
have allowed them to distribute the water from the rivers to their crops through water
channels that have been used as a means of communication and they have turned their
territory into a true labyrinth, in addition to the bodies of water that surrounded them they
have contributed other resources such as: boc catfish achicos, alligators, iguanas, deer
and various birds,
BELIEFS

The Zenues have believed in the Catholic and Christian presence. Among their beliefs
there has been faith for the Christian God and a pantheon of saints, San Simón del
Blanco, San Simón de Ayuda and San Simón de Juego, who have been honored and
made offerings to obtain good and abundant harvests.Also in the tradition of fables, myths,
legends and tales, which have been part of the ancient and religious belief system, have
been associated with the current "chimpanzees" (elves), mohans and charms. The Zenues
believed that life and death were part of the same journey; Funeral ceremonies have
started as a procession along the river with its torch-lit canoes and people have used their
best decorations.
they have practiced funeral rituals to bid farewell to the dead which consists of sailing in
rivers with their best clothing and bury the dead along with jewelry made of gold.

WAY OF DRESSING

Regarding their way of dressing the women have dressed in skirts and necklaces, now
they wear colorful skirts and low-cut shirts and the men have dressed in loincloths and
necklaces and now they wear a shirt, pants and a vueltiao hat, as a lifestyle.

ACTIVITIES
they have practiced activities such as cultivating , create handicrafts in mud and build
channels in the rivers, in order to feed themselves they have eaten animals and
agricultural products such as corn, avocados, cassava ... etc. for this they have hunted
animals like fish, reptiles and birds, as sources of economic income they have generated
money selling agricultural products and crafts made with sugarcane; In order to survive
difficult conditions they have made sticks and mud houses to protect themselves and have
transformed flooded valleys into fertile lands to grow their food.
