What is “Pase del

Niñ o”?
 Pase del Niñ o is a religious festival that is celebrated every
December 24 for the celebration of the birth of the child Jesus.

 This celebration brings with it a high social and cultural symbol,


since it helps to maintain unity, social cohesion, community
solidarity, through reciprocity and redistribution.

 The most common foods are boiled potatoes, hard-boiled eggs,


chili peppers, and animals such as baked pigs, cuyes, turkeys, and
roast chickens.

Riobamba
Riobamba is a city with a SPECTACULAR landscape where you can find a
very important tourist site, the CHIMBORAZO volcano.
Riobamba was the first Spanish city founded in Ecuador, that’s why it
has a lot of history and colonial architecture

Pase del Niñ o in this city, capital of the Chimborazo province


located in the Sierra region, is considered the most important
celebration of the whole year since they represent the effort to
keep alive the oldest cultural traditions.
• Several elements are present for the realization of this
important festival, such as:
• The Priostes are chosen each year on a voluntary way and they
are also the donors of the party that includes food, dances and
music.
• Sacha Runa is that character with an aged appearance and who
wears a wig and a whip. It represents the spirit of the Pacha
Mama, which creates life.
• Traditional clown is that character who represents the joy and
humor of the festival.

Cuenca
The richness of its architecture and culture in general earned Cuenca
the appointment of Cultural Heritage of Humanity, on December 1,
1999.
Cuenca is known for the Tomebamba River and handicrafts, including
Panama hats.
 In Cuenca, Azuay province, “Pase del Niñ o” is held, which
is considered an event of great importance.
 According to various sources, it is a custom that arrived in
Ecuador together with the Spanish colonization, and was
influenced by the traditions of the original peoples.

 In “Pase del Niñ o” of this city we can find several elements


such as the allegorical cars that advance along with the
boys and girls who ride on a castle of offerings, dressed as
the cholo and the Chola Cuencanos with luxury.
 Dancers from Tucumán also come who braid ribbons
around a pole next to biblical scenes, surrounded by
Indians, and little angels.

The main activities of the province are commerce, livestock, industry
and fishing since it has the second most important port in the country
and the largest tuna factories in Manta.
In Manabí the churches prepare beautiful nativity scenes with
life-size figures and in the houses it is customary to gather as a
family to pray the novena and sing Villancicos. At the end,
typical foods such as tamales and boñ uelos of corn with panela
honey are offered.

Throughout this celebration, a rapprochement between the


people is achieved, with activities that encourage them to
understand more with the community.

In this characteristic province, the chigualos game is usually


revitalized, which combines a visit to the mangers with games
such as "El Floron esta en mis manos.", with “amorfinos” and
“coplas”. On the other hand, the manger is also made, along
with an image of José and María that is customary to present it
before the eyes of hundreds of people in the province. There is
also a mass and a celebration on the last night of the novena.
