Introducing SULSIM 1-3

1.1 Purpose of this Guide

Hyprotech Ltd. and Sulphur Experts (Western Research) have
collaborated to design and implement the SULSIM Extension. The result
of this working relationship sees two of the industry leading simulation
programs (HYSYS and SULSIM) combined in a single model building
work environment.

By combining the software, HYSYS gains a high level of calculation

expertise from SULSIM for the sulphur treating of tail gas processes of
gas plants. The HYSYS flowsheet-modeling environment is used to
better leverage the thermodynamic, flow-sheeting, and optimization
capabilities within HYSYS.

1.2 How this Guide is Organized

This guide provides the information required to use the SULSIM
Extension in HYSYS. The unit operation views and their capabilities are
described, along with the necessary steps to run the extension.

A simple flowsheet model is constructed using the SULSIM Extension

and the steps provided in the tutorial. The tutorial presents the basic
steps needed to build the flowsheet model and how to use the SULSIM
Extension. This guide also provides the relevant parameters to
completely define the extension. Each view is explained on a page-by-
page basis to give a complete description of the data requirements for
running the extension.

This document does not detail HYSYS procedures and assumes the user
is familiar with the HYSYS environment and conventions. The required
information for setting up a HYSYS case and working with the
simulation environment is provided, but if more information about
SULSIM 6.0 is required, refer to the SULSIM 6.0 reference manuals.

2.4 SULSIM Extension View

The SULSIM Extension is a HYSYS unit operation that uses the SULSIM
software package as the solution engine to simulate sulphur recovery
processes within the HYSYS simulation build environment. The SULSIM
Extension functions in the same manner as a regular HYSYS unit
operation, the layout and data entry methods and procedures are
standard.

2-7
2-8 SULSIM Extension View

The data entry views consist of three worksheet tabs. At the bottom of
the unit operation view there is a colour-coded status bar that is used for
the following after the calculations are initialized:
• Guides the user to supply data in the appropriate locations.
• Indicates that additional information is required.
• Displays the overall status of the SULSIM Extension.

The SULSIM Extension has a comprehensive suite of methods and

correlations for modeling sulphur recovery processes. Any change to the
SULSIM models must be done from within the SULSIM simulation
environment.

Calculations are then updated in the HYSYS simulation environment

using the Recalculate button located in the SULSIM Model page.

The SULSIM Extension can be combined with any regular HYSYS unit
operation and in any configuration. SULSIM objects may be inserted at
any point in a HYSYS Flowsheet where the accurate prediction of
sulphur containing flows and conditions must be accounted for in the
process simulation model.

Interface 3-3

3.1 Introduction
The SULSIM Extension is functionally equivalent to a regular HYSYS
Flowsheet Unit Operation. It is installed in a flowsheet and connected to
material streams and performs a complete material and energy balance
around an existing SULSIM simulation case containing standard HYSYS
library components.

3.1.1 SULSIM Extension Construction

The SULSIM Extension was constructed using Microsoft COM
technology, extending the HYSYS class architecture and software design
to integrate the two simulation programs through a regular HYSYS unit
operation. In addition, SULSIM was upgraded to support COM
communications between the two programs as shown below:

Figure 3.1

COM SULSIM Extension

HYSYS COM SULSIM 6.0

3.2 SULSIM Extension User Interface

The SULSIM Extension user interface is completely integrated into the
HYSYS environment and conforms to all HYSYS usage conventions for
operations and data entry.

If you are an experienced HYSYS user, you should be familiar with all the
features of the SULSIM Extension user interface. If you are a new user,
review the HYSYS Reference Manual before using the SULSIM
Extension.

3-3
3-4 Property Views

3.3 Property Views

Like all HYSYS property views, the SULSIM Extension views let you
access all information associated with a particular item, such as the
Worksheet view page. Each view has multiple tabs and each tab contains
groups of related parameters.

The SULSIM Extension properties are accessed or modified through a

set of property views. The main SULSIM Extension View is the point
where inlet and outlet material streams are specified or attached to the
SULSIM Extension. The minimum stream attachments required to
initiate calculations are the Train Source inlet material stream and an
outlet material stream.

The SULSIM Extension then prompts the user to select an existing

SULSIM 6.0 case through the SULSIM Model page in the Design tab.
When the SULSIM 6.0 model is selected the names of the boundary/
internal objects are displayed in the Train Source and Acid Gas Stream
pages. SULSIM 6.0 stream specifications are supported in the Train
Source and Acid Gas pages, in addition to the inlet conditions provided
by the HYSYS stream property views.

3.3.1 Main SULSIM Extension View

The main SULSIM Extension View is the first view that displays when a
SULSIM Extension operation is added to a HYSYS Flowsheet. This view
provides the user with an entry point to supply and define the basic
characteristics of a SULSIM Extension operation.

The main SULSIM Extension View is the starting point for the definition
of any SULSIM Extension operation. When the user selects the
Flowsheet/Add Operation from the Menu Bar and then selects the
SULSIM Extension, the main SULSIM Extension View displays and is
ready to accept input. The user must select the remaining tabs on the
main SULSIM Extension View to fully specify the extension as required.

3-4
Interface 3-5

Design Tab
The Design tab requires the user to define the minimum necessary
stream attachments between the HYSYS simulation case and the
SULSIM Extension. The Design tab also requires the user to select a
SULSIM simulation case and lets the user configure the Train Source
and Acid Gas Stream input data and specifications. Every instance of the
SULSIM Extension requires the minimum of two stream inputs that
include Train Source and an outlet material stream.

The SULSIM extension prompts the user to select a SULSIM simulation

case. If all data input corresponds to a fully defined SULSIM case, HYSYS
executes flowsheet calculations automatically.

If an additional Acid Gas Stream attachment is required, HYSYS detects

the number of additional stream inputs and alerts the user and displays
the Acid Gas Stream names in the Connections page, Acid Gas Stream
(SULSIM) field.

Connections Page
On the Connections page, the user may select the Train Source and
output material streams using the drop-down list or by directly entering
new material streams. The user may also supply a name for the
operation using the Name input field.

The Ignore this UnitOp During Calculations checkbox can be selected if

the user wants to disable the concurrent calculation of intermediate
results during data entry. This setting is recommended if the speed of
the computer is an issue or if the user wants to delay the calculations
until all data is entered.

SULSIM Model Page

The SULSIM Model page lets the user select and edit a SULSIM
simulation case. The File Path field is read only and displays the path
and file name of the model that is selected using the Select button.

3-5
3-6 Property Views

The Load SULSIM Model button lets the user import an existing
SULSIM model. An Open File dialogue box is displayed for selecting the
model.

The SULSIM Visible checkbox displays the SULSIM 6.0 GUI containing
the loaded model. When the SULSIM 6.0 GUI is displayed, the
simulation model may be edited. After editing the SULSIM simulation
model, the HYSYS flowsheet is updated using the Run Sulsim button.
The SULSIM 6.0 GUI is displayed modally while SULSIM is calculating.

If the current Sulsim model is edited within the Sulsim GUI, then the
case must be re-saved within Sulsim (to the appropriate directory) to
ensure the changes are used for subsequent calculations from HYSYS.

Train Source Page

The Train Source page allows for the configuration of a SULSIM Train
Source Input stream. The configuration attributes are as follows:
• Attached SULSIM Stream Name
• Temperature (supplied in HYSYS)
• Pressure (supplied in HYSYS)
• Molar flow (supplied in HYSYS)
• Adjust Water
• KO Temperature
• S as S1 flow

The compositions of known HYSYS library components that are fed to

the SULSIM model are displayed on the Compositions page.

3-6
Interface 3-7

The Train Source page completely displays the data requirements of a

Train Source stream. Refer to the following screenshot:

Figure 3.2

Acid Gas Page

The Acid Gas page allows the user to attach a multiple number of acid
gas streams and to configure each attached stream as follows:
• Attached SULSIM Stream Name
• Temperature (supplied in HYSYS)
• Pressure (supplied in HYSYS)
• Molar flow (supplied in HYSYS)
• Adjust Water
• KO Temperature

The SULSIM Extension automatically detects the required number of

Acid Gas Streams needed to run an existing SULSIM model and also
displays the SULSIM Acid Gas Stream names in the Connections page
<Acid Gas Streams (SULSIM)>.

4.1 Introduction
This tutorial explains how to add a SULSIM Extension to a HYSYS
flowsheet. The user imports an existing SULSIM model into a HYSYS
flowsheet that contains a Train Source and an Outlet stream. The
SULSIM model being used is the accompanying ammonia.s50.

4.2 Flowsheet Setup

Before using the SULSIM Extension, a HYSYS case must be created. In
the Simulation Basis Manager, create a fluid package using the Peng-
Robinson cubic equation of state and add the following 23 components
to the HYSYS component slate:

H2,Ar,O2,N2,C1,CO,CO2,C2,H2S,COS,SO2,CS2,H2O,NH3,HCN,C3,iC4,
nC4,iC5,nC5,C6,CH4S,C2H6S, S_Vapour

4.2.1 Defining the Components

Create a stream IL in the Main Simulation Environment and define
values for the following components:

Component Value
Name IL
Temperature [K] 308.15
Pressure [atm_g] 0.68048
Molar Flow [kgmole/h] 100
Composition mole fraction
H2 0.000
Ar 0.000
O2 0.000
N2 0.000
C1 0.005
CO 0.000
CO2 0.292

4.3 Adding the SULSIM Extension

After the HYSYS case is created and the Train Source stream conditions
and compositions are specified, the SULSIM Extension may be added:

To add a SULSIM Extension to a HYSYS Simulation Case:

1. Create a HYSYS Case suitable for the addition of the SULSIM
Extension. This requires the definition of a Fluid Package and two
Material Streams (as a minimum).
2. Select Add Operation from the Flowsheet menu or use the HYSYS
function key F12.
3. Click the Extensions radio button and click the SULSIM Extension
from the available unit operations group box on the UnitOps view.
4. Click Add.

6. Select Material Streams from the Inlet and Outlet drop-down lists of
the SULSIM Extension view. If these streams are not installed in the
case, they can be created by directly typing their names on the
Connections page.
7. To define the stream conditions, right-click on the stream name and
select View or specify the necessary conditions of the Train Source
and outlet streams in the Worksheet tab.
8. Following the successful attachment of feed and product streams,
the SULSIM Extension automatically prompts the user to select an
existing SULSIM model.
9. After the model is selected, the calculations are performed
automatically. When the calculations are complete, the Object
Status bar changes colour indicating the calculation state. If the
calculations are successful, a green Status Bar is indicated and
displays OK.

4.4 Importing a SULSIM Case

The SULSIM Extension automatically prompts the user for a SULSIM
case when the Train Source and Outlet streams are specified on the
Connections page.

To select a SULSIM model manually:

1. On the SULSIM Model page of the Design tab, click the button
Select SULSIM Model, an Open File Dialogue box displays:

4.5 Initiating Calculations

The inlet feed streams, Train Source, and Acid Gas Streams must be fully
specified to initiate calculations. HYSYS stream specifications always
override any specifications made within the SULSIM model. Once the
stream attachments are made and the SULSIM case selected, HYSYS
initiates calculations automatically.
