1-4 How this Guide is Organized
This document does not detail HYSYS procedures and assumes the user
is familiar with the HYSYS environment and conventions. The required
information for setting up a HYSYS case and working with the
simulation environment is provided, but if more information about
SULSIM 6.0 is required, refer to the SULSIM 6.0 reference manuals.

Installing SULSIM Extension 2-3
2.1 Introduction
The SULSIM Extension runs as a plug-in module to HYSYS. It is used in
the HYSYS model building environment with a selected fluid package.
The SULSIM Extension is accessed in the same manner as a standard
HYSYS unit operation.
The following table lists the system requirements for running the
SULSIM Extension with HYSYS:
Component Requirement
Operating System Microsoft Windows 2000/NT 4.0/95/98.
Disk Space Approximately 6 MB of free disk space is required.
Serial Port The green security key is used with the standalone version
of HYSYS and can only be attached to a serial
communications port of the computer running the
application (do not plug in a serial mouse behind the
security key).
Parallel Port SLM keys are white Sentinel SuperPro keys, manufactured
by Rainbow Technologies. The Computer ID key is installed
on the parallel port (printer port) of your computer. An
arrow indicates which end should be plugged into the
computer. This is the new key that is used for both
Standalone and Network versions of HYSYS.
Monitor/Video The minimum usable monitor/video is SVGA (800x600), but
the recommended is SVGA (1024x768).
Mouse A mouse is required. Note that a mouse cannot be plugged
into the back of the green serial port key used with the
"standalone" version of HYSYS.
Parallel Port The Sulsim 6 Sentinel SuperPro key is also installed on the
parallel port (in series with the HYSYS key if required).

2-4 Installation
2.2 Installation
HYSYS and SULSIM 6.0 must be installed prior to installing the SULSIM
Extension. To install the SULSIM Extension:
1. Close all other operating Windows programs before starting the
installation process.
2. Insert the HYSYS software CD into the CD drive.
3. From the Start menu, click Run.
4. In the Run view, type: d:\setup.exe and click the OK button (where d:
corresponds to the drive letter of the CD drive).
For instructions on installing 5. Select HYSYS_SULSIM from the Extension menu to start the
HYSYS, refer to Chapter 1 -
Installing HYSYS of the installation.
HYSYS Get Started manual.
For instructions on installing For computers with the CD-ROM Autorun feature enabled, steps 3 and 4
SULSIM, refer to the SULSIM are automatically performed.
User Guide.
6. The first dialogue box displays the name of the application being
installed. Click the Next button if the information is correct.
7. Specify a destination folder where the setup installs the SULSIM
Extension files. If you do not want to install the application in the
default directory, use the Browse button to specify the new path.
When the information is correct, click the Next button.
8. Review the information you provided and if correct, click the Next
button. HYSYS then begins installing the extension files.
9. During installation the user is prompted to select a location for the
work file folder. If you do not want to install the folder in the default
directory use the Browse button to specify the new path. This
directory must be writeable.
2-4
Installing SULSIM Extension 2-5
The user may also install the accompanying SULSIM.fpk in the Basis
Environment, using the Import button.
Ensure that the fluid package and its components are selected to
produce a match with the components used in Sulsim. In cases where
the Sulsim extension unit operation is being added to an existing case,
ensure that all of the Sulsim components are accurately mapped to the
base fluid package.

2. Click the Add button and a new SULSIM Extension displays on the
HYSYS PFD. The default SULSIM Extension view is the Connections
page as shown below:
Figure 2.2
3. To view other pages of the SULSIM Extension, click the tab of the
desired page.
2-7
2-8 SULSIM Extension View
The data entry views consist of three worksheet tabs. At the bottom of
the unit operation view there is a colour-coded status bar that is used for
the following after the calculations are initialized:
• Guides the user to supply data in the appropriate locations.
• Indicates that additional information is required.
• Displays the overall status of the SULSIM Extension.
The SULSIM Extension can be combined with any regular HYSYS unit
operation and in any configuration. SULSIM objects may be inserted at
any point in a HYSYS Flowsheet where the accurate prediction of
sulphur containing flows and conditions must be accounted for in the
process simulation model.

Interface 3-3
3.1 Introduction
The SULSIM Extension is functionally equivalent to a regular HYSYS
Flowsheet Unit Operation. It is installed in a flowsheet and connected to
material streams and performs a complete material and energy balance
around an existing SULSIM simulation case containing standard HYSYS
library components.
Figure 3.1
If you are an experienced HYSYS user, you should be familiar with all the
features of the SULSIM Extension user interface. If you are a new user,
review the HYSYS Reference Manual before using the SULSIM
Extension.
3-3
3-4 Property Views
The main SULSIM Extension View is the starting point for the definition
of any SULSIM Extension operation. When the user selects the
Flowsheet/Add Operation from the Menu Bar and then selects the
SULSIM Extension, the main SULSIM Extension View displays and is
ready to accept input. The user must select the remaining tabs on the
main SULSIM Extension View to fully specify the extension as required.
3-4
Interface 3-5
Design Tab
The Design tab requires the user to define the minimum necessary
stream attachments between the HYSYS simulation case and the
SULSIM Extension. The Design tab also requires the user to select a
SULSIM simulation case and lets the user configure the Train Source
and Acid Gas Stream input data and specifications. Every instance of the
SULSIM Extension requires the minimum of two stream inputs that
include Train Source and an outlet material stream.
Connections Page
On the Connections page, the user may select the Train Source and
output material streams using the drop-down list or by directly entering
new material streams. The user may also supply a name for the
operation using the Name input field.
3-5
3-6 Property Views
The Load SULSIM Model button lets the user import an existing
SULSIM model. An Open File dialogue box is displayed for selecting the
model.
The SULSIM Visible checkbox displays the SULSIM 6.0 GUI containing
the loaded model. When the SULSIM 6.0 GUI is displayed, the
simulation model may be edited. After editing the SULSIM simulation
model, the HYSYS flowsheet is updated using the Run Sulsim button.
The SULSIM 6.0 GUI is displayed modally while SULSIM is calculating.
If the current Sulsim model is edited within the Sulsim GUI, then the
case must be re-saved within Sulsim (to the appropriate directory) to
ensure the changes are used for subsequent calculations from HYSYS.

Worksheet Tab
This tab lets the user directly edit Material Stream attachments without
having to open the stream Property views. Standard HYSYS stream data
is displayed through the Conditions, Properties, and Composition
pages.
Performance Tab
This tab lets the user view standard SULSIM output/calculated data and
includes Output material stream:
• Temperature
• Pressure
• Molar Flow
• Inlet Sulphur
• Total Sulphur Production
• Overall Recovery Eff.
• SL Molar Composition

6. Select Material Streams from the Inlet and Outlet drop-down lists of
the SULSIM Extension view. If these streams are not installed in the
case, they can be created by directly typing their names on the
Connections page.
7. To define the stream conditions, right-click on the stream name and
select View or specify the necessary conditions of the Train Source
and outlet streams in the Worksheet tab.
8. Following the successful attachment of feed and product streams,
the SULSIM Extension automatically prompts the user to select an
existing SULSIM model.
9. After the model is selected, the calculations are performed
automatically. When the calculations are complete, the Object
Status bar changes colour indicating the calculation state. If the
calculations are successful, a green Status Bar is indicated and
displays OK.
