Learner Analysis:
● Age/Gender: The class contains 28 total students. The ages range from 9 to 11 with
the majority of the students being age 10. The class is evenly distributed among gender
with 14 males and 14 females.
● Cultural Background: Eighteen of Ms. Tumlin’s students are Hispanic, 5 are White, 1 is
Black, and 4 are of Asian descent. One student is an English Language Learner (ELL)
whose primary language is French. Five students are in the Early Intervention Program
(EIP) which is a program for students who are at risk of not maintaining or reaching
grade-level academic standards.
● Education Level: All of the students are first-time 4th-grade students. The majority of
students read at grade level or slightly below, except for the six students who are a bit
more below grade-level reading (5 EIP and 1 ELL).
● Specific Entry Skills: Students will need to be able to read and comprehend written
text. Students should have a working knowledge of the elements of a story including
plot, characters, theme, setting, etc.
○ Attention: I will get students’ attention with music that is somewhat sad and will
hopefully make them curious. I will use captions that leave the students wanting
more information. I will use a variety of pictures and visual elements.
○ Relevance: I will find a way to relate the story to something the students can
relate to such as feeling lonely sometimes.
○ Confidence: The learning objectives will be shared with the students prior to
watching the book trailer.
○ Satisfaction: I will tell the students the book won a Newbery Medal Book
Award. I will discuss briefly what the book is about with the students. Once they
are excited and showing interest, I will show the book trailer. After viewing the
trailer, I will have a discussion with the students about their overall feelings for
the trailer and provide positive feedback and praise.
2. Book Selection: The book I choose is The One and Only Ivan written by Katherine
Applegate. The book won the 2013 Newbery Medal award. A sequel to the book was
recently released in May of this year. I would love to get the students interested in
reading this book so that they would consider reading the sequel as well.
