LEARNING ACTIVITY 2

EVIDENCE: CULTURAL LITERACY AROUND THE WORLD

When I was 12 years old, my mother decided that we should go meet my maternal
grandmother whom I had never met. The place was in a town in Boyacá, but my
grandmother lived in the country, where her house was far from the main avenue.
We left on a Friday at dawn, we took the bus which took an hour to reach the
place. From then on, we had to walk for an hour and a half to reach his distant
farm.
I was not used to walking so much so I arrived very tired. The grandmother came
out of her humble house whose construction only had two rooms and was built in
an old style. My grandmother was a beautiful lady who was 90 years old and
whom she had wanted to meet for a long time. His customs were different, he
cooked on a stove with firewood, he did not use gas as we do. Something
strange that I saw that there was no electricity, I had to light with a candle or a
flashlight. There was also no aqueduct or tank to reserve water. Water from a
fountain was used which was fresh and crystal clear. My grandmother used to
pray the rosary every night after seven in the evening. There were several
customs that she had and that we did not. Our stay there was 4 days which were a
little difficult for me because there was no TV or some comforts that I was used to.
But I really enjoyed being there and listening to the stories my grandmother told to
my parents and me too. I ran in the beautiful fields, took fresh air and collected
many wildflowers. I also learned that in every generation there are different
cultures and that even when people have not studied, they usually have the best
attitude towards others. I learned that from my grandmother.
