*Characteristics of Argumentative Essay:
1. It conveys opinions that are proposed as true and justifiable.
2. It has a controversial issue and the argument may be in favor or against.
3. It is sometimes called persuasive writing because it aims to convince the reader about a
debatable issue.
*Analysis-technique in argumentation that takes a part from the whole and scrutinizes it to prove
the point.
*Human Interest- refer to emotional appeal that may be both amusing and able to generate
empathy or different emotions
*Prominence- when famous people are affected, the story matters.
*Stress- tells about relative prominence of the syllable or musical note
*Virgil- represents a guide
*Primordial- existing from the beginning
*Conclusion- part of the essay restates the main claim and gives one or two general statements
which exactly summarize the arguments and support the main premise
*Body- part of an essay contains reasons presented in each paragraph
*Proximity- the closer a story hits home, the more newsworthy it is.
*Human Rights- regarded as belonging fundamentally to all persons

* Introduction- It is the part that gives the context and background of the issue. It also establishes
the style, tone and significance of the issue.
*Invisibility- This form of bias attempts to completely exclude a group of people. Women, those
with disabilities, gays, and homosexuals continue to be missing from many of today’s texts.
*Cosmetic bias- A Science textbook that features glossy pullout female scientists but includes
precious little narrative on the scientific contributions of women.
*Tone and mood of the poem Laura written by Petrarch- It is about Petrarch’s love and passion
for Laura.
*Bibliography Entry:
1. The author’s names
2. The date when the work was published
3. The title of the work
*In constructing simple bibliography for different types of materials, the following should be
remembered:
1. Each entry should end with a period.
2. Italics may be substituted by underlining.
3. The final document should be double spaced and in alphabetical order by the first

*Best example of an unsupported generalization- Differences in principles foretell a chaotic
relationship.

*Reason for citing references:
1. We cite our references to credit the source of information and ideas.
2. We cite our references so that readers can locate for further information if required.
3. We cite our references to validate our arguments.
*Several tips must be remembered in Debate:
1. Don’t make new arguments, you may only read new evidence.
2. Avoid repetition of your constructive arguments;
3. Avoid reading evidence only, explain why these issues win debates.
*Examples of an unsupported generalization:
1. Everyone loves a delivery of flowers and a box of chocolates.
2. Friends are people who will never let you down, no matter what.
3. College is the only way a person can be properly educated
