B325 TMA explanation and guidelines

Spring 2020

I- General instructions:

1) Submission

The TMA cut-off date is set for week 11; specifically 10/04/2020.

Late submissions are allowed within the following restrictions:

- Any late submission will be subject to a deduction of 10 grades per late date up to 7 late
days.
- After 7 days from the cut-off date, students are no longer allowed to submit their TMA
and they will be granted a zero.

2) Format

Students have to make sure to submit their TMA in an essay format. They need to have a
header or footer with their name, ID, course code, tutor name and semester.
They need to submit their TMA with the PT3 form on the LMS and provide a hard copy for
the tutor. In case a hard copy is not provided, the tutor has to print the TMA for correction
and make sure that it is similar to what is uploaded on the LMS.

3) Referencing

Students have to refer to Harvard style referencing. They need to support their discussion with
end of text referencing and in-text citation. Please advise students that paraphrasing does not
prevent from putting a reference/in-text citation. On the contrary, paraphrasing or not a
reference is to be provided.

Students have to restrain from referring to copy paste or limit copy paste material for pure
definitions.

Tutor should focus on providing tutorial on Harvard style referencing to students and do not
assume that they know how to do it.

4) Material

For the TMA, students have to refer to chapters 1 and 10; the case; and external resources.
Students are to be advised that Wikipedia and any other […]pedia websites are not academic

resources. They are specifically to refer to the e-library or Google scholar when it comes to
searching for external resources. A demo can be done in class to help students in this regard as
how to search the e-library or Google scholar.

II- Guidelines

The TMA is composed of two questions. Students have to answer each question with a word
limit of 750 words. Students are advised to read the case before they start answering the
questions.

Below are guidelines that can be shared with the students with regard to the material to refer
to for each question of the TMA:

1) Question 1
Students have to refer to chapter 1 and the case.

For the course material,

In chapter 1, they need to discuss the six bases for collaborative advantage.

For the case, students need to refer to the case and identify which basis are considered and
how they were mainly considered and implemented. Their answer need to be supported with
evidence from the case and clear discussion and not just listing.

Please note that the order of discussion is not static but dynamic. Students can start by
discussing the six bases for collaborative advantage then refer to a discussion of the case or
they can refer to a discussion of each basis and reflect on the case if it is available or not. This
is a proposition of the answer division. Students can refer to a different division as long as they
include all elements.

The most important thing is critical discussion. It is not that they have to discuss theoretical
material and then refer to the case. On the contrary, they need to provide a link between the
course material and the case and provide solid reasons for the analysis/result they have
reached. Evidence from the case are a must. They need to provide extract from the case to
validate their discussion.

2) Question 2

Students need to refer to chapter 10; the case and external resources.

For the course material,

In chapter 10, they need to discuss the three types of power: power over, power to and power
for.

For the case, students need to identify to which type of power the private sector is referring to
its operations in order to accept significant risks. Students need to support their discussion
with reference to the case and external resources. Their answer need to be supported with
evidence from the case and clear discussion and not just listing.

Please note that the order of discussion is not static but dynamic. Students can start by
discussing the three types of power then refer to the case and identify which type of power is
more referred to by the private sector in the case. This is a proposition of the answer division.
Students can refer to a different division as long as they include all elements.

With regard to external resources to refer to, students can be advised to specifically refer
actions taken by the private sector in general at this level and type of power used. They can
refer to examples mentioned in the case and search for additional information and resources
to support the discussion and validate the type of power they have found implemented in the
case.
