CASE STUDY; AMIR ADNAN

Concept of Entrepreneurship
Entrepreneurship is one of the four mainstream economic factors- land, capital,
labor, and entrepreneurship.

According to Joseph Aloysius Schumpeter (1934) – An entrepreneur is an

innovator. Schumpeter considered economic development as discrete dynamic
change.

“Entrepreneurship is the tendency of person to organize the business of his own

and to run it profitably, using all the qualities of leadership, decisions making and
managerial caliber etc.”

This involves not only the process that leads to the setting up of a business entity
but also the expansion and development of an ongoing concern. The study of
entrepreneurship is considered with the entrepreneurial behavior, the dynamics of
business set up and expansion & development. The term “entrepreneur” is often
used interchangeably with “entrepreneurship” . But conceptually they are
different. It’s a continuous economic process which recognizes the need to change
and entrepreneur is a key person to initiate any change.

Entrepreneurship need to ground their innovative activities in basic, real world

principles of conducting a successful business. Two of the most important
concepts are profit and customer focus. Profit is the difference between revenue
taken in and expenses paid out. Without profit there is no revenue to invest in
future growth of business, and in instances where there is no negative profit, there
is no money to keep the business going.

AMIR ADNAN – THE MAN, THE LABEL

“I always think that when I have conquered one area or stage , Then it’s a sign

To get to the bottom of another heap and rise gradually, till I conquer that too”

The concept of branded clothing for men, introduced by Amir Adnan more than
fifteen years ago, revolutionized the way men dressed. Today his name is

ENTREPRENEURSHIP 9
CASE STUDY; AMIR ADNAN

synonymous with quality and innovation, making the man an indisputable icon of
men’s fashion and his label the most sought after in PAKISTAN.

Established in 1990, the House of Amir Adnan is proudly the largest network of
men’s wear in Pakistan. The label has amalgamated the indigenous traditionalism
of this region with the contemporary sophistication of the modern world. A highly
developed method of quality control guarantees the impeccable finesse of his
garments, bringing them at par with some of the best fashion houses of the world.

His lines of products are fast translating to the taste of multicultural groups. If his
ornamented long coats are being enjoyed as traditional grooms wear in Pakistan
then his contemporary jackets are been worn to discos in New York. His clients are
just as diverse, men who walk in from the street, celebrities who rule world of
showbiz and style and of course high-level statesmen including Pakistan’s
President Pervez Musharaf, Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz, India’s former Prime
Minister Vajpayee, Hamid Karzai, President of Afghanistan, Paul Bringel, Prime
Minister of Mauritius and crown prince of Bahrain. The statement is success, the
achievement is style.

Amir Adnan will represent the generation of multicultural diversity: a generation

of people who are citizens of the world but seek a dot of the cultural recognition.
It’s all about making statements, not following convention; looking successful, not
careworn and having the poise and vision of tomorrow’s man.

ABOUT THE OWNER-AMIR ADNAN

FAMILY & EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND

Amir Adnan born on 23rd of January 1965 in Lahore. That was the time when
Pakistan and India went into war that was started in April and lasts in September.
His father was in Civil Services ,got his early retirement and migrated to Dhakka
(East Pakistan, Bangladesh). In this war, Pakistan army surrendered and Indian
army came & took over. His family was prisoned for 2 years under Indian army
camps. At that time, he was six years old, they arrived in Lahore and Amir Adnan
started his education from Karachi American School, left the school in 8th grade
due to lack of finances. Then, he joined another school and completed his O-levels.
After that, he joined IBA (Institute of Business Administration) and completed
his BBA finance degree from IBA. In Karachi IBA is among the most esteemed
Business Schools and the institute has been awarded Pride of Performance by
Government of Pakistan. Then he started working in UBL.

Amir Adnan went to Italy to learn more about fashion, the need of a simple necktie
took him there where he trained and returned with an ingenious approach to
reconstructing this basic accessory. He always had the spirit to do something
different. He was creative mind in designing. Designed and stitched a tie for
himself to work once which was highly admired by his colleagues. He received
orders for ties & shirts, which he was supplying to certain clothing stores as well.
They gave him an idea to dive into fashion industry. During early 90s, the concept
of ready to wear clothes for men was uncommon. Mr. Amir Adnan decided to tap

ENTREPRENEURSHIP 11
CASE STUDY; AMIR ADNAN

into this unexplored market and hence capture as much share, knowing his talent
and market potential in the field. Suddenly ties were no longer boring &
stereotyped ; the image metamorphosizing from the severity of formalwear to the
emancipation of the modern-day man. The new image of the tie spoke for a new
era menswear in Pakistan. Packed with insatiable desire to design, Amir Adnan
was charged with an energy to revolutionize mind sets and stimulate the senses of
the modern eastern man. In 1992, he designed his first range of italic jeans,
conventional denims, block printed with a hint of ethnicity, and launched them in
America. The juxtaposition of two seemingly heterogenous cultures set the
international market on fire, giving Adnan his cue to venture up the same path.
This path is, relatively unknown at that time, had taken him from strength to the
international frame which he has achieved today.

EARLY CAREER & BACKGROUND

1990 saw the evolution of men’s fashion in Pakistan when Amir Adnan, a business
graduate by profession, stepped out to realize his own individual style, at the same
time translating it to the demands of a frustrated market. He started with
manufacturing and selling ties, Kurta shalwar suits, and from eastern wear. He
decided to revolutionize mindsets and stimulate the senses of modern eastern man.
Thus, for achieving his goal he left his Tie business and started designing
“Sherwanis”. Over time, reduced portfolio to just men’s eastern wear, formal wear
and couture. First store was opened up in Zamzama in 1994, followed by another
one in Park Towers in 1995. A total of 3 stores in Karachi were well established
and running by 2000.In early 2000s, he decided to explore the Middle East markets
too. Hence, he went to Dubai to set up his brand. He assigned his brand his own
name “ AMIR ADNAN ”. The environment there was much more competitive in
Dubai in the readymade clothing industry than in Pakistan. A number of well-
established brands were present. Meanwhile, competition in the men’s fashion
increased in Pakistan. Brands like J. and ideas introduced their clothing line for
men as well. This posed a market threat to the Amir Adnan’s brand.

Therefore, Mr. Amir Adnan decided to return his home and expand his operations
in order to stay in the market. During the 5 years following his return, Mr. Amir
had set up 21 more shops all around Pakistan. Slowly and gradually with his hard
work and skills he rose amongst the masses. Thus, resulting in the expansion of his
outlets in different parts of country. Adnan began researching the different
dimensions of his newly found passion in 1994, at a close friend’s wedding
realized that fashion to him would not be about modernizing the culture but more

ENTREPRENEURSHIP 13
CASE STUDY; AMIR ADNAN

than that about making one’s identity universally acceptable. His mission was to
revive the Sherwani, the traditional long coat, which was buried with the lords and
maharajas of yesteryear. The modern-day man had adopted the western three-piece
suit as the only acceptable vision of grooms wear and Adnan had vowed to change
that. He had the vision to see that it was our indigenous craft and attire which
would help us make it to the international map of fashion.

He is a guy who maintains friendly relationship from to managers of the lot to that
of first line managers. He believes that without having a cordial relationship with
the staff success is very unlikely to happen. He acts as a brand manager. CEO is
his father. Gm of the firm is his sister (Beena Rashid). His particular outlets
consists of seven staff sales manager, assistant manager and 4 sales staff.

In his recent interview with THE NEWS LINE when he was asked that Was your
wife Hums, involved in the creation of the Amir Adnan label from the very
beginning? He replied, absolutely, we got married in 1993 and in 94 we opened
our first outlet in Zamzama. We opened it together and we worked at it, we
slogged at it. I was only selling ties to certain stores then (before launching our
own store). Huma and I both worked hard to create an entire menswear label from
there. She used to sit at the Zamzama store and manage it while I went around,
running back and forth, to factories and tailors etc. We both have very similar
interest and also, similar backgrounds. Then he asked, How do you and Huma
work as a team? He replied at this, My wife is extremely good at putting things
together. She is very much interested in the creative look and design of things,
whereas I am more and more involved in the business and finance side of things.
She handles FNKAsia on her own -it’s more her thing. And I think FNKAsia has
really established it’s own sense of style which you can blindly trust, just like Amir
Adnan sherwanis and kurtas. Even for the magazine, High , I look after the

ENTREPRENEURSHIP 14

editorial part and my wife looks after the visual part, which includes the creative
design. https://newslinemagazine.com/

TURNING POINT- AMIR ADNAN

❖ Fashion designing is the hobby of Amir Adnan and he converted his hobby
into business. some people in this industry just do fashion designing for the
sake of pursuing an art. For example, they are just interested in the creative
part of it and they are not involved in the business side, but his thinking both
sides are equally important. He is the first designer in Pakistan who has
commercialized the business of fashion, this is one thing unique that he has,
now there are a lot of people who are following the same line. He came up
with a realistic fashion not the one which looked nice and creative on paper
but actually nice on people as well.
❖ He started making ties as a hobby. He wear his own designed ties to work
and people use to appreciate him. People wanted to buy these ties and that
things give him an idea that there was a market of these kinds of thing. He
made some ties and started selling them it worked! So, he started fashion
designing, opened a shop and this is where he is today.
❖ Among fashion circles, Pakistani designer Amir Adnan has been credited
many times for giving the sherwani- the long coat -like robe particular in
South Asia-a glamorous twist. With a client list that includes statesmen,

ENTREPRENEURSHIP 15
CASE STUDY; AMIR ADNAN

Middle Eastern royalty and Hollywood celebrities, he recently showcased his

Eid collection in Dubai, which is now on sale in USE.
❖ The directory caught up with him to talk fashion, trends and the future of the
sherwani. He said once, The sherwani is simply an elegant and a more
elaborate version of a long coat which is already present in almost all
cultures. The only difference is that these long coats are not too common
now, but fashion is cyclical and soon the time will be right for the sherwani
to be the hottest men’s essential garment.
❖ In an interview with GULF NEWS he said when I started, men had accepted
themselves as machines who were only supposed to earn for their wives to
spend. It was taboo for a man to spend time and money himself to look good.
He honestly did not even have many options. I started designing ties for
myself for sheer non-availability of the product. Once people saw me
wearing vibrant accessories, the frenzy to own such ties caught on like
wildfire. Men had woken up and new trendy male came out who was not shy
to explore. My trick was that I designed for myself as a client, which kept
everything within a certain boundary of practicality and wearability. My
designs did not make men look weird, but stand out for elegance.
❖ Amir Adnan is extensively certified for re-introducing the trend
of sherwani into modern fashion. Hence, he has been recognized as
Pakistan’s first international menswear label. In Pakistan this highly famed
designer has got the largest venture of designer clothing. His customer mostly
belongs to lead class even ex-President of Pakistan Pervez Musharraf and
former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee are also among his lead class
customers.
❖ He is the largest enterprise of designer clothing in Pakistan, creating a retail
and manufacturing structure that can rival an international competitor. His

ENTREPRENEURSHIP 16
CASE STUDY; AMIR ADNAN

line of porter is available in Pakistan and Dubai. In 2004, he wanted to set up

a store in a shopping mall in Dubai which was owned by an Australian. Now
it was very easy to get a shop in Park Towers or any other mall because his
label is recognized. But when he requested to meet the mall owner in Dubai,
he thought he was joking. So, he had to convince him that my franchise is
market-worthy and that it has the potential to grow.
❖ He launched magazine in April 2005, according to him money is the first
thing. The success of the product lies in how well it sells in the market. At the
end of the day, it’s the sales figures that tell business is doing well. Selling is
the thing — it’s not enough if people just look at them and like them. They
have to like them enough to want them.

❖ The other thing is maintenance. The brand has to do consistently well and do
better and better every year. It should acquire a reputation which the customers
can trust blindly. Your quality should come out as the best, anywhere you go,
that things make him a successful businessman.
❖ Amir Adnan Pakistani designer has been hailed for modernizing traditional
South Asian clothes. He is more famous for men’s dress designing; he is one of
those fashion designers who work hard in establishing the Men’s Fashion in

ENTREPRENEURSHIP 17
CASE STUDY; AMIR ADNAN

Pakistan. From classical to contemporary, ties to turbans and from designing

couture for Pakistan’s President Pervez Musharraf to India’s PM Vajpayee,
Amir Adnan aims at softening boundaries, playing up to the synergy that exists
between cultures and generations.

HURDLES FACED BY-AMIR ADNAN

❖ Amir Adnan owner of “Pride of Performance award Government of Pakistan”.
Amir Adnan very popular in men fashion of Asia by creative mind. During the
90s, Amir Adnan enjoyed much of the market share as the competition was not
as much. Following 2000, many clothing brands such as Junaid Jamshed, Ideas
etc. also launched their clothing lines for men, offering Kurta Shalwar suits and
eventually Sherwanis as well. The market share is now relatively more
distributed. However, the fact that they mainly specialize in men clothing keeps
their products diverse in the men’s fashion which is what attracts their
customers. In an interview when he was asked about his stores in US, he
replied, No, Previously some stores in US used to represent my label but I
found it important for me to be there in order to represent myself best. So, I
don’t send my creations there anymore. That’s the reason why my family has
now moved to Dubai. You can’t stay here and look after a business that is
growing elsewhere, you have to give it your absolute best.
❖ The main hurdles that a businessman face mainly are Lack of resources,
maintaining best quality, maintaining its reputation, and knowing about when to
embrace the change according to environment and competition in the market.
Amir Adnan’s unique selling point is their vast portfolio of varying types of

ENTREPRENEURSHIP 18
CASE STUDY; AMIR ADNAN

designs in the men’s fashion. Other brands have men clothing line as small part
of their business. While, Amir Adnan has majority of its products dedicated to
the men fashion, its unique embroider, quality of the fabric being used, and its
specialty in groom’s wear.
❖ In his interview when he was asked “What makes a brand successful?” He said,
money is the first thing. To me, the success of the product lies in how well it
sells in the market. Do people find it worth buying? At the end of the day, it’s
the sales figures that tell me if my business is doing well. Selling is the thing-
it’s not enough if people just look at them and like them. They have to like them
enough to want them. On another question about, “How do you measure your
success?” He replied; Something my sister once said has stuck with me ever
since. She told me, ask yourself everyday: Am I better off today than the place I
was at the same time exactly a year from now? If your answer to that question
is an honest “yes”, then you are on your way up. You should not compare
yourself to your neighbors in judging yourself. But only keep in mind your own
standards and goals for what you want to be.
❖ Being a business graduate, Amir has a natural urge for balancing everything,
while it used for balancing sheets before, now it’s all about finding equilibrium
in his designs.

“Opulence and simplicity is what I always try to achieve in my collections,

A design should be balanced to attract a buyer”

❖ Amir also picked grooms wear as his personal favorite, as it gives more
room for experimentation. He also added that once an experiment shines
through, it gets trickled down onto the pret. Having dressed a number of
celebrities, politicians and crickets in his illustrious career, Amir desires to
one day design for the Chinese President, which will also be a benchmark

ENTREPRENEURSHIP 19
CASE STUDY; AMIR ADNAN

for him. “China and Pakistan share a mutual love for appreciation of detail.
Chinese is sheer brilliance seen in their pottery and painting” the fashion
line.
❖ Being a veteran and one of the very first designers, Amir Adnan believes
that his biggest achievement is not the global acclaim or his numerous LSA
wins. But empowering his workers is what prides him the most. “My tailors
don’t work for me, I buy their services”, he shared. Wrapping up, Amir
Adnan highlighted his vision for the next 5 years. He said that he wishes to
see the brand become more exclusive and enriching for the customers.
“Amir Adnan item should outlive its standard timeline; it should be
something of high perception and also be passed on over generations.”
❖ How did the idea of high come about? He said, In 2004, I wanted to set up a
store in a shopping mall in Dubai which was, I think, owned by an
Australian. Now, over here it was very easy to get a shop in Park Towers or
any other mall because my label is recognized. But when I requested to meet
the mall owner in Dubai, he thought I was joking. He gave me an
appointment just to humor me because he didn’t think I would sell there at
all. He asked me bluntly why I thought I would sell as a designer in Dubai
since he did not believe a Pakistani could have a fashion background. So, I
had to convince him that my franchise is market-worthy and that it has the
potential to grow. So, high magazine was a result of conservation. It made
me realize that even If I give someone a portfolio of my own, they wanted to
know where the products were coming from, how it was all done. Basically,
they were trying to figure out if I would be able to sustain the label. So more
than just a portfolio, I came out with a magazine called High.
❖ What are your goals for the label and what sets it apart from any other in
Pakistan? It takes long and hard work to reach where brands like Cartier,

ENTREPRENEURSHIP 20
CASE STUDY; AMIR ADNAN

Merc or Lexus are now. Maybe that is where I can take my brand. It won’t
happen today, or maybe not in another 20 years either. Maybe my son will
take over.

▪ FAQS

Q: Where else would you like to open your stores, after you have conquered
Dubai?

A: I am considering taking my business to India.

Q: What products are you looking at marketing next?

A: The jewelry that we are producing is very beautiful and reasonably priced, since
it is in silver. It has an eastern touch and detail that you will not find anywhere else
in the world. A pair of earrings, for example, will have a Mumluk-inspired filigree,
which I love. The jewelry design is also my own; western-styled jewelry will not
have the attention to detail as I add — I find perhaps an eastern touch makes
something more feminine. The newly launched jewelry collection is available in
Amir Adnan (Urdu) women stores.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP 29
CASE STUDY; AMIR ADNAN

Q: Who is your target customer?

A: South Asia is a huge market and a lot of people around the world interface with
it. This automatically rubs off its cultural influence onto other regions, just like our
spicy curries and chicken tandoori has become popular in the West. Similarly, our
clothing styles will also make headway into mainstream fashion. Hence, men all
over the world who interact with our region are my target clients.

Q: Tell us a little about your new collection and your inspirations behind it?

A: The new collection comprises warm and vibrant colors for Eid, along with a lot
of pure whites to go for morning prayers and family gatherings. I especially like
the overall embroidery textures on muslin, which look so serene — just the image
most suited at the end of Ramadan. I have also experimented with block printing
on men’s kurtas, which look very different from the regular embroidery.
Altogether, there is a sober and classic look about the entire collection.

Q: What are your future plans?

A: The house of Amir Adnan is continuously evolving. We are planning to extend

our clothing philosophy into other regions like India, Sri Lanka and Turkey.
Homeware is another region we are looking into. Working with a group [from an]
impoverished village near our factories, we are converting our rags into beautiful
rugs again incorporating the crudeness of unharnessed talent so abundantly
available in our region. Empowering women is such a wonderful feeling.
