Subject: Proposal to do a research on the old homes in Bangladesh, should it be increased or not?

INTRODUCTION

An old home is a multi-residence housing facility intended for senior citizens. The usual pattern
is that each person or couple in the home has an apartment-style room or suite of rooms.
Additional facilities are provided within the building. Often this includes facilities for meals,
gathering, recreation, and some form of health or hospice care. The level of facilities varies
enormously. A place in a retirement or old home can be paid for on a rental basis, like an
apartment, or can be bought in perpetuity on the same basis as a condominium. Many developed
countries have old homes or retirement homes. (www.wikipedia.org)

According to United Nations, an influx of senior citizens is seen in Bangladesh in recent years
due to a decrease in fertility rates and improvement in life expectancy. At the same time, The
growing intolerance among youth, coupled with their inability to adjust with the elderly, is just
one of the prime reasons for the rise in the number of old age homes in Bangladesh. 1 But
whatever the reasons may be, I think our parents or any elderly person should not pass their lives
in an old home when their relatives are alive and live near to them. Because all they want is, our
love and little care at old age. We should think about their sacrifices and love when we were at
childhood. Parents are the most precious and their blessings are the most precious. So, such
precious persons should not be thrown out. They should be kept and taken care by their children
as parents took care at their young age. 71 year old Sufia Begum (not her real name) would have
withered on the pavements if not for the generous assistance of an old age home for destitute
people. Around 250 people all above 60 years of age like Sufia have found shelter at Boshipuk
(Largest Old home in Bangladesh). This is the most selfish and inhuman work according to me. I
hope after finishing my research I will get my answer of this question: whether the number of old
home should be increased or not?

RESEARCH QUESTIONS

In my research I plan to sort out the negative impacts on our elderly parents for increasing old
homes. My research will address the following research questions:

 Are our societies aware of increasing number of old homes?

 Why do people send their parents to old homes?
 Although most of the people of upper class adopted much western culture, what do they
think about old homes in Bangladesh?
 What percent of the old home resident are really happy to live there?
 Is care of other than relatives and monthly some money sufficient for them? Or they just
want the love of their children till the last breath?
 Does any of the respondents’ relative live in an old home or want to send their relatives
in future?
 Our parents tend to live with their children. Is old home not forcing us to change this
beautiful tradition and adopt almost inhuman practice?
 Different private rich companies are taking the initiative to increase the number of old
homes, should we support them?

HYPOTHESIS

I think building old homes might be beneficial physically but not morally and psychologically
for elderly people of our country. I believe old home is a part of western culture where after a
certain age parents willingly do not want to live with their children and sometimes on the other
hand, grown up or married son or daughter do not feel comfortable to live with their parents.
And so they send their parents to an old home. I think this tradition should not be adopted in our
country. I expect that the children of our country do not want to see their parents end up in an old
home and counting days for death without any caring and related person around. In a nutshell, I
am assuming that more and more old homes should not be growing in Bangladesh and children
want to take care of their parents and the parents also want to live with their children till the last
breath of their lives.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

For my primary research, I will conduct a survey of a representative sampling of the general
public in Dhaka and interview people who actually live in the old homes and find out what do
they think about increasing old homes in Bangladesh as well as do they really want to be a
resident of old home when they are above 67 years old. To the end I will design a questionnaire
with different types of questions so as to get a range of useful data which will help me to answer
my research questions.
For my secondary research, I plan to use the resources of our north south university library and
archive section. I will also find some books and television shows on adaptation of old homes in
Bangladesh, etc. I will also browse the internet and use standard search engines like Google.

ORGANIZATION

My paper will be divided into several sections. Some of the most important sections are
Introduction, Area of Research, Data Presentation and Analysis, Summary of Findings, APA
reference list. Within the sections my organization will be based on my research question.

TIMETABLE

I hope to complete my primary research by early July and my secondary research by third week
of July. I shall complete writing the final draft of my research paper by early August, and submit
it by the specific deadline towards the end of this semester.

REQUEST FOR APPROVAL

I hereby request your approval for my research proposal. If you wish me to modify or improve
my proposal, I will submit it after incorporating the necessary modifications. I would also be
grateful for your valuable advice and cooperation in conducting my research and completing the
project.
