The Grand Portage
reservation is located
on the border of
Canada. It is on the
south and east of Lake
Superior. The word
reservation means an
area of land set aside
for living by american
indians.
This tribe is an Ojibwe
The Grand Portage symbol tribe. The symbol has four
quadrant parts. The north
quadrant is a turtle. The
east quadrant is a arrow.
The south quadrant is a
deer and is meaningful
because that is one of
their main foods. The
west quadrant is a pipe
and it is meaningful
because it honors
traditions. The four
quadrants mean north,
east, south, and west.

● The reservation extends about 18 miles on the shoreline reaching inland
between one quarter mile and nine miles
● The reservation area is 47,000 acres
● The tribal land is 37,390 acres
● The reservation population is 565
● The total enrollment is 790
● The reservation is 150 miles from Duluth
● It is located in Cook County
● The Unemployment is 5%
Grand Portage reservation history...
● The reservation was established by a treaty signed in 1845.
● In 1729 Cree guide auchagah drew a map for the first french traders,so that
they could find there way to the western sea.
● In july 1802 the north western company wanted to vote to move their summer
headquarters this meant that they would tear down the ther 18 buildings and
send them to the north in company schooners.
● The fur trading economy developed during the early years of contact between
Indian nations and Europeans.
● In 1783 the British northwest company had built a large complex of buildings
at Grand Portage and the name became Fort Charlotte.
● The Grand Portage Development Corporation was established in 1971 to
spur economic development on the reservation.

● The Grand Portage Lodge and Casino opened in 1975
● Approximately 18% of the employees are First Nation Ojibwe from the
Thunder Bay, Ontario Area
