CLAT 2015 imbroglio!
CLAT 2015 will be remembered as the
most nightmarish experience for many
law aspirants who wrote the exam on
10th of May 2015.
Firstly, the examining authorities set
one of the most challenging question
papers. The logic section had
questions, which had appeared in the
CAT for MBA aspirants. Also, some of
the questions asked in Math section
were very different and difficult from
the ones asked in the previous years.
The CLAT 2015 paper was certainly a

list with students’ details to ensure
transparency, they made a departure
from this norm and made the results
available only through the students’
respective log in page. Most of the
students reported that they had been
awarded at least 20 – 30 marks lesser
than what they expected.

students, the CLAT authorities
displayed the CLAT 2015 question
paper and answers as also the
transcripts of answers keyed in by the
students. This only opened the
‘Pandora’s box’ further. It was
discovered by students and experts in
the field that answers for close to 25
questions were incorrect including a
few typo-errors. Upon hue and cry
raised over this issue, the authorities
referred the matter to “expert
committee” and withheld the results.
It is another story that the “expert
committee” found only two typo errors
in the question paper and gave a few
marks to all the students and ignored
the other incorrect answers to
questions in English, Legal reasoning
and Logic sections.

On the 9th June, contrary to the usual
norms prevalent in all universities/
examination bodies, instead of
releasing the merit cum allotment list of
all eligible candidates on the official
website, open to public scrutiny, the
authorities ensured that only
candidates could view their allotted
university in their respective login page.
It is sad that an entrance test designed
to pick the best students to study in
premier law universities should be
fraught with unwanted controversies
and lack of transparency.
At the time of publication of this news
letter, an aggrieved candidate has filed
a Writ petition in the Jaipur Bench of
Rajasthan High Court demanding valid
explanation from the CLAT authorities
for the various irregularities committed
this year including plagiarized questions
and answers and demanded
explanation for incorrect answers to
many questions.
And, now the CLAT website carries the
merit list in details. Let’s hope that a
permanent CLAT committee would be
formed for proper conduct of CLAT in
the coming years.

1. You have achieved a top rank
in CLAT 2015. How does it feel?
Lucky, elated, but above all, relieved.
No more having to worry if I have
what it takes, no more worrying if
I’ve made the cut. It’s reassuring too,
to see the faith you reposed in
yourself, to see all those hours
invested in preparing, bearing
fruition.
2. What / Who inspired you to
consider law as a career option?
If there is one out-and-out reason for
my considering law as a career
option, it has to be the lure of its
theatricality, of rhetoric, of my affinity
towards writing and articulating,
analyzing and retorting. I find my skill
set quite conducive to the field.
Hence, the choice.
3. Describe the role played by
Sriram Law Academy in your
success.
If you’re looking for miracles, look
within, not without. But if you’re
looking for the means to make that
miracle happen; for comprehensive
material and for a set of people who

Special mention must be made about
SRIRAM’s legal aptitude. Their strike
rate with the reasoning questions is
incredible, with no less than twenty
questions picked verbatim from the
legal volume 2 textbook in CLAT
2015. Besides that, the legal
knowledge provided at the end of
every mock test, proved to be as
valuable as stardust, as they
appeared in the (unanticipated) legal
knowledge section.
4. How did you manage to tackle
"negative marking" in CLAT?
There is only one foolproof way of
tackling negative marking, and that is
to know, or try to know the answer to
every question. And that is what I
tried to do. Never did I compromise
on attempts, I just tried to increase
my right-to-wrong ratio. Of course,
that takes a lot of hard work, but
there are no shortcuts. Aim to get
every answer correct, even though
that may seem ridiculous. For, as trite
as this may have become to read, the
fact remains that if you aim for the
stars, you’ll reach the proverbial
moon. Of course, that doesn’t mean
you attempt questions you don’t
know the answers to. Just try to
know as many as you can.
5. GK is a vast area. Given that
you had to work on both Current
Affairs and Static GK, how did
you go about it?
The GK section is make-or-break. To
start out, GK was my most blatant,
patent weakness. However, I
recognized this, and worked not only

towards making my GK passable, but
in trying to fortify it into my bastion.
For current affairs, I maintained a
book in which I made regular entries
from websites like Gktoday.com and
Jagranjosh.com besides scanning and
scouring, perusing and poring over
the newspaper too. I took daily and
weekly quizzes, and was au courant
with all the important events that had
transpired over the course of the
year. Of course, SRIRAM Law Times
stood me in good stead too.
For static GK, I covered all the
priority topics outlined in the SRIRAM
A to Z on GK book. However, I didn’t
stop there, delving into the depths of
history, geography and awards on
the internet. Revise, (re)revise and
(rere)revise.
6. Would you like to share some
tips with our students who are
gearing up for the 2015
examination?
CLAT will bombard you with
howitzers you didn’t see coming.
Brace yourself, prepare yourself.
Make sure that your level of
preparation is such that irrespective
of the difficulty of the paper, of the
length, of the type of questions that
come, you will score well.
Don’t dread CLAT, embrace preparing
for it. Enjoy the hours of studying.
And remember, quality is just as
important as quantity.
Most of all, make sure that on the
ultimate day, when you sit yourself
down to tackle CLAT, you have
absolutely no regrets about not
preparing enough.
