1. Introduction
Down-hole self-contained combined tool GEO-6 makes registration of 6 parameters:
pressure P, temperature T, gamma-ray GR, fluid flow-meter Q, collar locator CCL,
thermoindication STI.
Using the tool allows you to:
 To produce a research of injection wells in operation at a pressure at the wellhead
without stopping of the injection and the formation water spout.
 Research the wellbore, including the upper fresh water aquifers.
 Receive the log well data from PC directly at the well.
 Reduce the duration of the well research significantly due to the exclusion of
works to pressure relief and upload of recovery injection mode.
Information is received from the sensors to the memory block of down-hole tool where
stored for measuring time. Power is supplied by a lithium battery or accumulator.
After working the tool information is read into the PC. Then you can explore the results
and control data on the screen as a standard log data in the time format. After combining of
tool GEO-6 data with depth data it can be formed a single file of depth format (LAS). If
necessary, all the data is issued to the printer in the standard form.

3. Design and description of the tool.

The tool consists of probe with the chassis with sensors and electronic boards, protective
casing, tool tips (upper and bottom) and upper/bottom flow-meters. You can connect or both
flow-meters or only one, or none.
After removing the upper tool tip you can access to the connector for connection to a PC.
After removing the protective casing, you can access to the electronic section.
In the electronic section are:
 the connector for connection to a PC,

4
 the GR sensor with electronic board,
 the battery section,
 the CCL sensor,
 the electronic board with micro-computer, memory and analog signal converters.

The operation principle is the measurement of physical quantities through the specified
time interval, converting them into digital code and record to non-volatile FLASH-memory.
Conversion of analog signals from the primary sensors into a digital code is produced by
analog-to-digital converter. Every function of the tool controls the microcontroller.
For pressure measuring is used the tensometric sensor of pressure. Additionally is used
the channel of temperature compensation of pressure sensor.
Channel of temperature consists of a highly sensitive platinum thermal resistance
sensor.
Connection the tool to a PC is possible in two ways. The first option is via an adapter
cable (included to delivery) to the USB port of a PC. The second option is via cable (not
included) to the COM port of the PC.
Scheme of the communication cable to the COM port and circuit connector adapter cable
for USB port are given in Appendix 3.
The power supply used accumulator the charging is done via the interface connector.
Scheme of location of pin connector is given in Appendix 3.
The power supply used lithium batteries (at operating temperatures above 95 to 150
degrees) or the accumulator (at operating temperatures up to 95 degrees).
For accumulator powered tools to prevent deep discharge of the accumulator the
scheme of disconnection reducing critical supply voltage (about 3 V) is used.
Battery powered tools continue to work to reduce the supply voltage 3.3-3.5 V, but in this
case the functionality of some measurement channels can not be guaranteed.

4. Testing of working ability, start/stop record of tool.

Once connected by the cable-adapter with the USB port of computer, run the application
Geo6.exe. Choose the serial port that connects to the tool via the drop-down list of ports and
click on the button "Open". If there is a connection, then the status bar displays the message
«COM1 Open / Connection established with GEO-6.»
On the tab «Read information» view ADC data from the tool (temperature - T, pressure -
P, pressure compensation - K, collar locator - CCL, flow-meter - Q, thermo indication – STI,
voltage - U) in real time (need to put a checkmark in the area "Preview").
The computer must display the values of all channels: channel of temperature shows the
tool temperature, channel of pressure shows zero pressure within normalized error, the
channel of voltage shows voltage of power supplies. All channels can have a little change.
Channels can be checked by an external impact: channel of temperature should react to
heat by hand, pressure channel should show the pressure created by the press of the MP-600
type, channel of water capacity should show in water a value of 1 (100%). Channel LM (the
collar locator) must react to the metal items. Channel Q must respond to signals from the flow
meter (impeller rotation). STI channel shall show in water an overheating in compare with
temperature channel and the flow speed must decrease the overheating.
Starting record of the tool. After you have checked all the channels go to the tab
"Start".
Before you click the button "Start", which will switch the tool into a measurement mode it
is necessary to fill in the table of measurement programs.
In the table, you can configure the different measurement programs (from 1 to 16). In
each program, you can enable/disable any of the channels (key "space" or right mouse button).
Besides, for each program you can set the delay (from 0 to 9999 minutes), the duration (from 1
to 999,999 min), and the cycle (from 0.125 to 127 seconds).
For version 5 of the tool in the program you can set the threshold pressure at which the
tool will switch to measuring mode.
Stopping record of the tool. To stop the tool after connection, it is necessary to press
the "Stop" button on the tab "Start".
5
For more information, see the software documentation for user guide for application
GEO-6.exe.

5. Order of data reading.

5.1 Unscrew the upper tip of the tool.
5.2 Connect the tool to the USB-port of the PC by cable (included in the delivery).
5.3 Reading information:
- run the application Geo6.exe;
- on the tab "Start" choose the serial port which the tool is connected to through a drop-
down list of ports and click on the button "Open"; if there is a connection, then the status bar
displays the message «COM# Open / Connection established with GEO-6";
- Go to the tab "Reading information", enter the extra information and then specify the
path to save the file;
- Click on the button "Read all" or "Read number 0." On the button "Read all", the
application reads the data of all measurement programs from the tool in one GST file. By
clicking the "Read number 0" the application reads only data recorded by measurement
program with the number "0" and proceed to read the next program with the number “1”. So you
can read all the necessary programs in different GST files.
5.4 Turn off the tool on the tab "Start" by pressing button "Stop" if you do not plan to
further work (the tool is turned off for conserving power supplies) or run the tool by the button
"Start" on the tab "Start" for further work.
5.5 Disconnect the cable.
5.6 Wrap the upper tip of the tool.
5.7 Convert the data into a LAS format (on depth) through an application
GeotekhApp.exe.

6. Location of the tool’s channels.

Wire tip is taken as zero; all other channels are assigned the snapping coefficients
(points of recording, points of snapping). These coefficients are recorded to the tool together
with the calibration coefficients. Snapping coefficient is a length(dm) from the wire tip and a
channel sensor. After converting the recorded information from the tool to the LAS format, all
channels are shifted in depth relatively of zero to the amount of snapping coefficients at dm.
Snapping points are set individually for each tool and depend on the location of sensors
and the tool itself. If the tool is flipped, the snapping points are the countdown.
Snapping coefficients at GEO-6 (dm):
- for top flowmeter channel TZQ1= 5;
- for collar locator channel TZL = 26;
- for temperature channel TZT = 29;
- for pressure channel TZP = 30.
- for STI channel TZST= 30;
- for bottom flowmeter channel TZQ2= 37.

In the software manual of application GEO-6.exe described how to change the coefficients of
snapping.

the same points as described in section 4.
8.12 When disassembling and the assembly of the sealing connection of the tool draw
an attention to the mating surfaces and rubber rings. Surface of mating parts must be clean and
free of abrasive products and corrosion products. Rings should be protected from distortions
twisting of mechanical damage and cuts. The rings must not have changes of the shape and
high elasticity. When assembling the ring should be covered with grease, non-destructive of
rubber (castor oil).
8.13 By unscrewing the upper tip do not allow the fluid flow down into the tool.

8. Power supply.

Battery or accumulator can be sources of power supply. Batteries located in the battery
compartment firmly secured to the chassis at the top of the tool. The battery cover is labeled
"Power Supply".
To charge the accumulators need to:
1. Unscrew the upper tip.
2. Connect the charger (charger) for the tool.
3. Switch on the charger in the current network.
4. Ensure the ignition of the red light on the charger housing.
5. Recharge the deck until the green LED on the charger.
6. Turn off the charger from the network and from the tool.
7. Connect the tool to the computer and check the power supply voltage (should be
within 4.1-4.2 V)

To replace the batteries need to:

1. Unscrew the protective cover of the tool.
2. Carefully remove the protective cover from the chassis of the tool without touching the
electronic board.
3. Remove the battery cover by removing the screws securing it.
4. Unsolder the power wires from the battery pack and remove the old batteries.
5. Check new batteries. Solder 2 batteries in series in a single unit.
6. Insert new elements into the battery compartment with the correct polarity. Solder to
the battery pack the power wires.
7. Install the battery cover and tighten the screws.
8. Attach the protective cover on the chassis of the tool.
9. Screw on protective cover of tool.

Recommendations for soldering of batteries.

1. Surfaces to be soldered should be checked to make sure that there are no oil, dirt or
residue isolation. Debris should be carefully removed, until the surface is clean and
shiny.
2. Turn on the soldering iron and let it warm up to the desired temperature. Do not
attempt to use a soldering iron before it warms up.

7
3. Lubricate the end surfaces of batteries by active flux type "F- 38N" (or other) and to
tin.
4. Ends of the conductors, which will be connected to the battery, clean up and to tin.
When soldering iron heated to the desired temperature, attach it to the mix, and not
to solder. This is perhaps the most important point, if its done properly, you get a
defective junction with the "cold" soldering. "Cold" is the result of solder that is
applied to the solder joint before component leads or wires will warm good soldering
iron. Just after the soldering connection is warmed up, it is placed a drop of solder,
which can freely spread over the surface. If the connection is heated to the same
temperature as the solder, the solder will melt and fill all cavities in the connecting
parts. Be sure to use a small drop of solder, as too much will also cause the
formation of "cold junction". This is due to the fact that too much hitch solder melts
completely.
5 . When the solder to be spread were soldered connection, remove the soldering iron
and wait 20 seconds until the solder cools. It is important that at this time no moving
parts are brazed, as this may lead to cracking and disruption of the solder contact.
When 20 sec will pass, gently tug conclusions to ensure that just made no
mechanical connection mobility. Now, inspect the connection: whether it features a
"cold" solder, such as dull surface or melt bits of solder. Good solder connection
should be smooth and shiny.
6. Solder to produce by soldering iron of power more than 40 watts. Do not heat the
lithium batteries for more than 100 degrees, so the solder does not produce more
than 5 seconds.
7. At the end of the soldering flux residues must be thoroughly removed from the welded
surfaces.

Rules of operation of lithium accumulators (3.6V; 2000/2200mAh):

- Do not throw batteries into a fire and open them;
- Avoid touching the battery terminals simultaneously two conductive objects (short cut);
- Do not use rechargeable batteries in the following cases: mechanical damage, with
leakage of electrolyte, with swelling body,
- Must periodically charge the batteries;
- Charging can be performed at a temperature of the enclosure from +10°C to +45°C;
- Operating temperature range is from -20°C to +95°C, and at the edges of the range
output capacity of the cells is reduced;
- For longer storage of the tool more than 6 months to produce periodic charging the
batteries (at least once every 6 months)

Rules of operation of lithium batteries:

- Do not overheat elements;
- It is forbidden to throw items into the fire and open them;
- Do not touch simultaneously the two poles of conductive objects (short cut);
- Do not use the items in the following cases: mechanical damage, with leakage of
electrolyte, with swelling of the housing;
- Do NOT recharge lithium batteries (not rechargeable).
- For long-time storage of the tool to avoid loss of capacity lithium batteries must
unsolder (pre-recorded testimony of their residual capacity in the application
communications)

ATTENTION!
In case of violation of the rules of operation with the lithium power sources it may
cause an explosion, followed by ignition of lithium.

12. Questions and Answers.

Question: How do I determine the maximum operating time of the tool?

Necessary to distinguish the maximum operating time of the tool on the filing of the all
memory and maximum operating time of the tool on power supply.
The maximum operating time of the tool to fill all memory, hour:
Тп=(4325376/N)*Т*(1/3600),
where N - the number of bytes per measurement, Т - the measurement period in seconds.
For all channels, except the pressure channel, number of bytes is equal 2, for pressure
channel is equal 4 (plus channel of compensation). Thus, when fully enabled channels (P, T,
VL) number of bytes per measurement is 8, which is 4325376/8 = 540672 points of
measurement.
Example: when the measurement period is 0.3 seconds and with turn on all channels
Tn = (4325376/8) * 0.3 * (1/3600) = 45h.
Time to fill the memory (hours), depending on the cycle and the number of active
channels is given in the table (for pressure measurement requires 2 channels):
