comprehension of the current ethical values. The general objective of this paper, understanding the
concept of love in Saint Augustine and its applicability according to the work The City of God. The
methodology used was theoretical-bibliograpic. In order to acheive this objective, it was necesary to use
the followinf works of the author for such purpose, namely, the book Confissions, The free will, The City
of God volumes I and II, Soliloquies and On Christian Doctrine. This research was helped by the

philosopher Augustine, after following so many paths and experiences, was always
seeking an ideal, the true love. Saint Augustine writes the work named The city of God,
in which he talks about the two cities, calling them the city of God, and the city of man,
showing that the city of God lives the true love, according to God's commandments. The
city of man, on the other hand, lives the self-love, lives according to their own will and
choices. To Augustine's philosophy, love begins in the individual and permeates to the
others, for we are beings that interact with one another and it is necessary that we live
the charity towards one another.
