English Language Assessment and Testing (TEFL 6207)

Dear student,

As per the guidelines forwarded by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, we are
expected to give the courses using the electronic media. Even though this may have its own
shortcomings, I hope you may find it interesting to make yourself busy by attempting to do the
activities and tasks I set to you. These tasks may demand you to read extensively and thereby
broaden your knowledge of constructing language tests.

Wish you good luck,

Wendiyfraw Wanna (PhD)

Activity 1
Reflective questions:
1. The concepts_ assessment, measurement, test, and evaluation_ seem to be synonymous.
Erroneously, people happen to use them interchangeably. Make distinctions between
them. In other words, show how they are different from each other.
2. Testing is somehow related to measurement. That means, we might need to do some kind
of measurement when we are engaged in testing. If we are to do measurement, we need to
have some knowledge about measurement scales. Some scholars came up with four types
of measurement scales: nominal, ordinal, interval, and ratio. Explain each of the scales by
citing appropriate examples.
