Important ! … X-Ray Protection

The X-ray equipment is dangerous for patients and operators,

unless the test of protective conditions is strictly implemented.

There may be some injury if the X-ray equipment is operated incorrectly.

Therefore, you must carefully read and understand the contents of the operation
manual before operating the equipment. We are pleased to help you with correct
application of this equipment.

The equipment adopts the highest standard for safety, takes effective measures and
limits the use of other rays except useful rays. But in fact, any equipment cannot
provide absolute protection. Any design cannot prevent the injury when some people
make themselves or others exposed to X-rays because of incaution, unreasonableness
or ignorance.

Everyone who is engaged in the work in relation to X-rays should be trained and learns
to take proper measures to protect oneself from radiation injury. This is very important.
Furthermore, the operators must know the contents recommended in the 26th Annual of
ICRP by International Radiation Protection Association and in the NCRP Report (It

can be found in the NCRP publication. Address: 7910Woodmont Avenue ,Bethesda,

MD28814) given by Radiation Protection and Survey Council.

Manufacture states: all the operators and service engineers must be authorized to use,
install, align and repair the equipment; they should know the danger when someone is
exposed to X-rays excessively, and also they have enough knowledge and skill. The
operators should understand that manufacture and its agents are not responsible for any
injury caused by excessive exposure.

Many protection materials and devices can be used. The use of these materials and
devices are recommended.

Please keep this operation manual together with the

equipment and review the operation procedures and safety
requirement regularly.

2.1 Overview

Please comply with the requirement involved in

this operation manual so as to use the equipment
safely for a long time. Read this manual
carefully before operating the equipment and
keep it in hand for reference at any time.

Only qualified workers who have been trained

are permitted to operate the equipment
according to this manual direction.

If the protection requirements cannot be strictly

observed, the X-ray may result in injury to
patients and operators.

Each person concerned with the work of X-ray

must be acquainted with the requirement for
safety and adjustment, especially with the parts
of “Important! and …… X-ray protection”.
This is very important.

Before operation of the equipment, please read

and understand these requirements carefully.
Although X-ray is harmful to human body, with
correct operation, the X-ray equipment will not
bring about any danger. Please make sure that
all maintainers and operators are trained
normally and acquainted with the danger of

GFS501-1 Operation Manual REV6.1 5

Operation Manual

X-ray. Those who are responsible for the system

must be acquainted with the safety requirements
for X-ray operation. Please read the Instructions
and descriptions of each part carefully, and fully
understand the requirements for safety and
operation.

2.2 Responsibility

Make sure that all personnel who are authorized

to use this equipment are aware of the danger of
excessive exposure to X-ray.

It is clear that in sales of this equipment,

Manufacture, its agents and distributors are not
responsible for the injury to patients or
operators caused by over-exposure to X-ray.

The manufacture shall not be responsible for

any injury to patients or operators caused by
over-exposure to X-ray because of incorrect
operation or wrong procedures.

The manufacturer shall not take any

responsibility for any injury to patients or
operators caused by over-exposure to X-ray as
the equipment is not maintained according to
the manufacturer’s requirement, or any
modification is made without authorization.

The operator’s responsibility is to observe and

arrange the patient’s posture properly, and use
the facilities to protect patient against injury so
as to guarantee the patient’s personal safety
during the operation of the X-ray equipment.
GFS501-1 Operation Manual REV6.1 6
Operation Manual

When operating or repairing the X-ray

equipment, do not expose hands, wrists, arms or
other parts of the body to direct radiation.

2.3 Maximum Permissible Dose (MPD)

Many studies on X-ray have identified the basis of maximum

permissible dose (MPD) of X-ray. These study results have
been used for developing MPD standard by the International
Committee of Radiation Protection. These restrictions are not
easy to define. So, it is necessary to follow the new
achievements, making them useful.

For radiation workers, the International Committee of

Radiation Protection (ICRP) stipulates that the accurate value
of MPD shall not be exceeded as the following:

 Stochastic effect
Annual dose equivalent: 50mSv(5rems)
 Non-stochastic effect
Annual dose equivalent of eye crystalline lens: 150mSv(15rems)
Annual dose equivalent of other parts (Such as red bone marrow,
thoracic part, the lung, gonad, skin and limbs):
500mSv(50rems)
 Accumulative equivalent of lifetime: 10mSv × age
(1rem × age)

2.4 Radiation Protection

As X-ray is harmful to health, a lot of measures have been

taken to prevent direct rays. Some X-ray influence will
generate cumulative effect. It may incubate for several
months or years. For the operators, the safest principle is to
avoid direct rays “at any time”.

In the path of X-ray, any object will generate secondary

(scattered) rays. The intensity of secondary rays depends on
the energy and intensity of initial X-rays and atomic number
of irradiated object. The intensity of the secondary rays may
be stronger than that of the rays reaching the film. Therefore,
measures should be taken to prevent the secondary rays.

GFS501-1 Operation Manual REV6.1 7

Operation Manual

Application of lead shield is an effective measure. In order to

minimize the danger, it is necessary to use lead shield, lead
gloves, lead apron and lead scarf to protect the thyroid gland.
The lead shield shall not be less than 2mm thick, or equal to
2mm lead equivalent. Personal protective articles (such as
lead apron, lead gloves, etc.) must not be less than 0.25mm
thick, or equal to 0.25mm lead equivalent. In order to ensure
basic protective requirement, please refer to the “Protective
Standard for Basic Radiations” provided by the radiation
protective department.

When operating or repairing the X-ray

equipment, please keep at least 2m distant from
the focus and the radiation beam. Do not expose
hands, wrists, arms or other parts of the body to
direct rays.

2.5 Personal Dose Monitoring

Through personal dose monitoring, a reliable data can be

provided so as to determine whether the dose received by the
examinee exposed to the radiation is safe. This can unveil the
incorrect or improper actual radiation protection measures
and some place of leakage of X-rays.

To determine if the present protection measures are feasible,

the most effective method is to detect the dose of exposure
directly with a meter. The meter should be placed where the
operator or the body part may be exposed. The dose to be
detected shall not exceed the acceptable dose standard.

A common method, but not an exact method, to determine the

dose of exposure is to put a film at a typical place. After a
certain period of time, the film is developed and the radiation
dose is determined.

To detect whether a person is excessive exposed to radiation,

the common method is to use a personal dosimeter. This is to
seal the X-ray sensitive film or substance and put it on the
body. Although this device can only detect the X-rays where
the device is placed, it can provide reliable dose of rays
received by the body.

Use the low-speed screen, middle-speed screen, and

high-speed screen respectively to adjust 70kV for AEC
calibration. Then, choose kV compensation curve to
determine the percentage of density variation.

4.10.5.1 kV Compensation

Films have different reactions to different kV values. This

kind of difference can be adjusted by compensation. The
compensation curves are given below. In installation, the kV
values can be selected according to the actual conditions.

except the On/Off keys to clear the error and come back to
the normal standby state; If the error can not be eliminated,
please turn off and restart the machine. If the system is still
in trouble, report for repairs.

4.12 Exposure Control and State Indication

4.12.1 Preparation and Exposure

The radiographic exposure is controlled through the

hand-switch connected to the console.
The hand-switch has 3 shifts: “OFF”, “Preparation” and
“X-ray Exposure”.
The push key of the hand-switch is pressed half way,
indicating “preparation”, and fully pressed, indicating
“exposure”.
Fig. 4-11 Hand-switch

4.12.2 State Indication

The exposure state is indicated with functional module

showing “Ready” and “Exposure”

Ready: Indicating that the selected technical parameters are

appropriate without error or system malfunction. The anode
rotates, the filament is heated up and the tube assembly is
ready for exposure.

Exposure: Indicating that the radial is emitting and the sound

of indicator can be heard during exposure.

Preparation: The hand-switch is pressed half way

(preparation position), being prepared for exposure by the
selected tube assembly. When the tube is ready, the “ready”
indicating lamp is on without any fault or system error.

GFS501-1 Operation Manual REV6.1 57

Operation Manual

Press the key, and the following functions will be conducted.

 Anode rotates.
 Filament current from the state of warm-up to
temperature rise of the selected mA.

Exposure: When the “ready” indicating lamp is on, fully

press the hand-switch to the end, and the “exposure”
indicating lamp is lit up, indicating that the radial is emitting
for exposure. Before completion of the exposure, or under the
state of AEC, if the machine does not stop exposure but the
hand-switch is released in advance, the exposure will be
finished ahead of time. And the error code is shown.

During the exposure, the “exposure”-indicating lamp is

always lit up, and the sound of indicator will be heard during
exposure.

Do not release the hand-switch during exposure.

4.13 Error Information

When there is something wrong with the system or an error in

operation, the error information will appear on the display
screen of the console. This information can indicate a possible
reason of the system error.

All the error codes start with the letter “E” (for example, E01),
the operators can feed back the possible error reason directly
to the serviceman and let the serviceman prepare what it is
needed through the telephone, or taking proper actions in
advance before the serviceman arrives

Delete error information by pressing any of the keys on the

console except the key of ON/OFF. If the error still remains,
the error code will appear once again.

5.2 Preheating Process of X-ray Tube

Make sure that the preheating of the tube

assembly is correct before exposure. And make
sure that no people who do not need the X-ray
radiation are carelessly exposed to the X-ray.

Exposure cannot be done unless the tube assembly is

preheated. This will extend the service life of the X-ray tube.

When starting to use the system every day, and the selected
tube position that has not been used for about one hour, the
preheating procedure of the X-ray tube is recommended as
follows:

The preheating procedure of the X-ray tube is as follows:

 Turn off all the beam-limiting devices.

 Select the exposure parameters 70kVp, 200mA,
100mAs and 500ms.
 Make sure that no person is exposed to X-ray inside the
X-ray room.
 Conduct the exposure for 3 times at intervals of 15
seconds.

This preheating process is for the typical tube.

Compared with the information and data
provided by the tube manufacturer, if there is the
variance between them, conduct according to the
guiding value of the tube manufacturer.

GFS501-1 Operation Manual REV6.1 72

Operation Manual

Excessive heating of the filament will shorten the

life of the tube assembly. Reducing the
“preparation” time for exposure to the minimum,
the heating of the filament can be reduced to the
shortest time.

5.3 Radiographic Operation

Check the radiographic sequence according to the following:

● Select the operation mode of radiographic table.

1. Confirm the conventional radiographic technical

parameters kVp, mA, mAs and ms.
2. Confirm the technical parameters for automatic
