Requirements
Option 1

nonrenewable resourc e use.
Provide shade from arc hitec tural devic es or struc tures that have a solar reflec tanc e index2 (S RI) of

Use hardsc ape materials with an S RI of at least 29.
Use an open-grid pavement system (at least 50% pervious).
OR
Option 2
Place a minimum of 50% of parking s paces under cover 3. Any roof us ed to s hade or
cover parking mus t have an SRI of at leas t 29, be a vegetated green roof or be covered
by s olar panels that produce energy us ed to offs et s ome nonrenewable res ource us e.

they s atis fy the equation in Option 3.

Option A
Have in plac e over the performanc e period ENERGY S TAR®–c ompliant, high-reflec tanc e and high
emissivity roofing material that has a minimum emissivity of 0.9 when tested in ac c ordanc e with
AS TM 408 for a minimum of 75% of the roof surfac e.
Provide rec ords and results of quarterly inspec tions over the performanc e period to determine that
these features are being maintained.
Option B
Install/maintain a “green” (vegetated) roof for at least 50% of the roof area.
Provide rec ords and results of quarterly inspec tions over the performanc e period to determine that
these features are being maintained.
Combinations of roofing materials that meet the requirements of Option A and Option B
can be us ed providing they collectively cover the des ignated area. See the LEED for
Exis ting Buildings Reference Guide for guidance on calculating achievement of credit
requirements bas ed on us ing a combination of Option A and B roofing materials .

materials (reflectance of at leas t 0.3) for 30% of the s ite’s non-roof impervious
s urfaces , OR place a minimum of 50% of parking s pace underground OR us e open-grid
pavement s ys tem (net impervious area of LESS than 50%) for a minimum of 50% of the
parking lot area.
Us e ENERGY STAR Roof-compliant, high-reflectance AND high emis s ivity roofing (initial
reflectance of at leas t 0.65 and three-year-aged reflectance of at leas t 0.5 when tes ted
in accordance with ASTM E903 and emis s ivity of at leas t 0.9 when tes ted in accordance
with ASTM 408) for a minimum of 75% of the roof s urface; OR, ins tall a “green”
(vegetated) roof for at leas t 50% of the roof area.
Nonroof measures
Use the existing plant material or install plants that provide shade over paving areas (inc luding
playgrounds) on the site within 10 years of planting. Install vegetated planters. Plants must be in
plac e at the time of oc c upanc y permit and c annot inc lude artific ial turf.
Provide shade with struc tures c overed by energy generation systems, suc h as solar thermal
c ollec tors, photovoltaic s, and wind turbines.
Provide shade with arc hitec tural devic es or struc tures that have a three-year aged solar reflec tanc e
(S R) value of at least 0.28. If three-year aged value information is not available, use materials with an
initial S R of at least 0.33 at installation.
Provide shade with vegetated struc tures.
Use paving materials with a three-year aged solar reflec tanc e (S R) value of at least 0.28. If three-
year aged value information is not available, use materials with an initial S R of at least 0.33 at
installation.
Use an open-grid pavement system (at least 50% unbound).
High-reflectance roof
Us e roofing materials that have an SRI equal to or greater than the values in Table 1.
Meet the three-year aged SRI value. If three-year aged value information is not
available, us e materials that meet the initial SRI value.

Establishment

paving.

the roof area, or both. If us ing both high-reflectance and vegetated roof s urfaces , meet
the following criterion:

available, us e materials that meet the initial SRI value.

ins tallation), (2) be a vegetated roof, or (3) be covered by energy generation s ys tems ,
s uch as s olar thermal collectors , photovoltaics , and wind turbines .

resourc e use.
