Dedicated… is derived from the desire of composers Hilary Brooks and Karen MacIver to

create contemporary music in a classical style that is accessible to a wide audience whilst
technically and artistically challenging to the performers.

Brooks and MacIver created the project whereby they performed these
compositions on two grand pianos to full houses and critical acclaim across the UK.

This collection evokes the spirit of ten remarkable women. Uniquely, each title is preceded
by a story - printed into the score - which performers are encouraged to share with their
audience.

Several of the pieces provide space for one or other player to perform a short improvisation
based on a given chord sequence. This is optional.

Hilary Brooks is a multi-award winning composer, arranger and musical director.

Composer of the film score ‘The Eastern Bride’ featuring the City of Prague Philharmonic
orchestra and winner of The Critic’s Award for Best Music and Sound for Sondheim’s
Sweeney Todd and Irving Berlin’s White Christmas. Brooks provided the original
arrangements for the hit musicals Glasgow Girls and Sunshine on Leith.

Karen MacIver is the recipient of a British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and

Authors Award. Her work spans theatre and dance where she specializes in
Improvisation for Moving Image. Her acclaimed work ‘Flame’ was written for the London
2012 Olympic Torch Relay and her opera ‘The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari’ has become a
regular feature onstage. Karen’s online book ‘The Art of Class’ guides musicians into the
world of piano improvisation for dance.

A woman with a beautiful name, Valentina Tereshkova.
A factory worker and amateur parachutist, she was
plucked from obscurity by the Soviet government in
1963 to be the first woman in space.
At age 77 she was seen carrying the Olympic flag at the
2014 Sochi winter Olympics in Krasnodar Krai, Russia.
Valentina announced that she would have been
delighted to join the ‘Mars One ’mission scheduled for
2022 and would be ‘unconcerned about returning…’
