Lecture: Prestress Losses

“Any fool can know. The point is to

understand.”

- Albert Einstein
In consideration thereof, a designer of prestressed concrete members should be able
to check whether his/her estimates of prestress losses are realistic using detailed
computations, in order to ensure the efficiency of his/her design.

As stated in the Handout:

“If the calculated losses are too high, that is, higher than actual losses, then more
prestressing reinforcement is used and camber increases. If the calculated losses
are too low, the beam sags and cracks under service load. Loss calculations should
neither be overly conservative nor ignored.”
