Reading or Analysing or Understanding a Birth Chart

Birth Chart, Rasi Chart, Rasi Chakra

The birth chart is a snapshot taken of the heavens at that particular moment
when the birth of the native happens on earth
the experiences which the native is to experience in this particular birth
can be read or ascertained from the birth chart
the unseen karmas, or the samskaras, as these unfold in this birth,
during the dasa bukti antharam, main period, sub period and the minor sub period respectively

Birth Chart Substratum

The birth chart has as its ‘substratum’
The 12 zodiac signs or rasis (rashis)
And its numerous divisions and sub divisions

Equal Divisions
The equal divisions are by 12, giving the 12 signs
by 27 giving the 27 natchitras, nakshatras or the constellations
and the 108 equal padas, when each natchitra is divided into 4 quarters or the padas

each Sign has been assigned a planet as its lord

and this is referred to as the Sign Lord or Lord of the Sign
and in Tamil – Rasi Athipathi

each Natchitra has been assigned a planet as its lord

and this is referred to as the Star Lord
and in Tamil – Natchitra Athipathi

each Pada has been assigned a planet as its lord

and this is referred to as the Pada Lord
and in Tamil – Pada Athipathi

Unequal Divisions
Then we have the unequal divisions of each of the Natchitras

Each Natchitra is 1st divided into 9 unequal parts

These unequal parts are referred to as the ‘Sub’ of the Natchitra
27 natchitras x 9 gives the total 243 sub divisions

Each of the divisions has to synchronise and map in perfection

with the 1st division of the zodiac of 360 degrees into the 12 signs of 30 degrees each
this does not happen when the 1st level sub divisions is computed
because some of the sub divisions start just before the 30 degree line of the zodiac
and end after the 30 degree line of the zodiac
and when that happens
that particular sub division is separated into 2
and by doing so, the mapping and overlapping equally with the 30 degrees line is achieved

and in this process, an additional of 6 sub divisions is created
and that is why, eventually there are 249 sub divisions (initial 243 plus the subsequent 6 divisions)

Lagna
The Lagna or the Ascendant would be placed in any 1 of the 12 Signs
Once the Lagna has been introduced onto a Sign
The Sign is then referred to as the ‘House’

The next sign, counted clockwise, in the South Indian Design,
Becomes the 2nd House and so on until the 12th House.

The 12 Signs then become the 12 Houses

At the specific moment when a birth happens
Assuming a photograph of the 9 planets is taken

Lagna or Ascendant

Birth of individuals happen on Earth

The Earth is in constant motion :

 Rotation movement on its axis
o The rotation is anticlockwise from east to west
 Orbital movement around the Sun
o And simultaneously moves across all the 12 Zodiac Signs

In the Birth Chart in Vedic astrology

Earth is not shown in the Birth Chart
Because the observer is on Earth and observing the Solar System
And observing the Zodiac Circle
As such, the observer does not feel that he is moving
He feels he is stationery
From the Earth, the Sun appears to be moving across the heavens,
Across the Zodiac Circle
And this is referred to as the Geo-Centric point of view

In reality, it is the Earth that is orbiting the Sun
And simultaneously orbiting the Zodiac Circle
It is the Earth that is moving from one Sign to another
And this is referred to as the Helio-Centric point of view

Birth of Lagna
And Movement of the Lagna through the 12 Zodiac Signs

Lagna is defined as the Zodiac Sign which is rising on the Eastern Horizon at the time of one’s birth
A birth can happen anywhere on Earth

For understanding purposes, we shall assume that the birth is happening in Kuala Lumpur (KL)
As the Earth rotates on its axis
There would be a moment when KL faces the rising sun, the horizon or the eastern horizon
And gradually moves away from sunrise to noon
And then from noon to sunset
And from sunset to midnight
And from midnight to sunrise
Which point is the conclusion of a day
And the beginning of a new day

During sunrise, the day begins

During sunrise, KL would be facing ‘a’ particular sign out of the 12 signs
And that particular sign which KL is facing
Is referred to as the ‘Rising Sign’
At the perpendicular angle of 90 degrees

There is a little tricky situation here that we need to delve deeper
What is meant when we say “at the perpendicular angle of 90 degrees”
KL is at the perpendicular angle of 90 degrees to what?

Sunrise is a relationship of the Earth against the Sun

So the perpendicular angle of 90 degrees refers to the Earth’s relationship against the Sun

But then how does the Rising Sign come into the equation?
As the Earth is orbiting the Sun
It is simultaneously orbiting the Zodiac Circle
And that is how the Sign becomes part of the equation

Two (2) things are happening simultaneously, that is:

 the orbital movement within a Sign
 and the rotational movement of the Earth against the Sun

At different times of the year

Earth is orbiting through different signs
On 14th April of each year of the Gregorian calendar
Earth would be at Zero degrees in the Sign of Aries
And for the Indians that is the beginning of the Indian New Year

The above explanation is from the Helio-Centric perspective

But from the Geo-Centric perspective,

It is said that Sun would be at Zero degrees in the Sign of Aries

The Earth’s position in the zodiac

has been replaced with the planet Sun

When we look at the following birth chart

and see that Sun is at 16:09 in Capricorn on the 31 st Jan 2020 at 1.24am
it simply means that in reality it is Earth which has moved to this position

From the above we have understood
That the Lagna for the day begins with the sunrise
And as the Earth continues its rotational movement
The Lagna would move through all the 12 Signs
This has been explained in detail in the Notes under “ASCENDANT IN VEDIC ASTROLOGY”
There the difference between a Solar Day and a Sidereal Day has also been explained.

In the context of a Birth Chart
How once the Lagna has been included
The concept of Houses gets introduced
Overlapping over the 12 Signs
That is the 12 Signs with the introduction of the Lagna become the 12 Houses

The Sign in which the Lagna is becomes the 1 st House

The succeeding sign, that is the next sign, in a clockwise manner for a south indian design
Becomes the 2nd sign and so on until the 12th house.

The time of birth is the most important criteria
The time of birth is that which determines the exact longitudinal degrees of the Lagna
So the Lagna represents that moment when the birth of the Native happens
When the Native has become an independent individual

So the Lagna can be used to interpret the birth of the Native

The nature of the birth
As to whether it is a smooth birth without complications
Or a birth with complications

The Lagna refers to the Native, the person or the individual per se
So it also refers to the physical body
As such we can use the Lagna to describe the physical features of the Native
The sign is which the Lagna is placed is referred to as the 1 st House
And the 1st House is referred to as the ‘Tannu Bhava’
‘Tannu’, in Sanskrit or Hindi, refers to the ‘physical body’

Understanding the placement of the Lagna in a Sign

When we say that the Lagna is in Capricorn

The following is to be understood:
1. The General Placement, that is, the Lagna is in Capricorn.
a. Therefore the whole sign Capricorn has become the 1 st House.
b. The Lagna covers the full span or full arc of the sign of 30 degrees

2. A Specific Placement in the Sign of Capricorn

a. For this there is a specific longitudinal degree (in degrees, minutes and in seconds)
b. This specific placed can be from the Equal Divisions of the Sign
c. And from the Unequal Divisions of the Sign

To understand the above we shall use a birth chart with the L:agna in Capricorn as follows:

General Placement

The Lagna is in the Sign of Capricorn

The ownership of Capricorn has been assigned to the planet Saturn
Saturn is the Sign Lord of Capricorn
So the Lagna Lord is Saturn

Other names for Lagna Lord are:

 Lagna Athipathi, in Tamil

Specific Placement

To understand this we need to know the exact degrees of the Lagna

For the above chart, the Lagna degree is 29:22 in Capricorn
Read as 29 degrees and 22 minutes

Longitudinal Degrees are expressed in 2 methods as follows:

1. In Degrees within a Sign
2. In Total Longitudinal Degrees

Degrees within a Sign

 A Sign is for 30 degrees (12 signs x 30 degrees = 360 degrees)
 So the number for the degrees within a Sign would be expressed as:
o Equal to or greater than 0:00 degrees (=> 0:00 degrees)
o and less than or equal to 30:00 degrees (<= 30:00 degrees)

Total Longitudinal Degrees

 The Zodiac of 360:00 degrees is divided into the 12 signs of 30:00 degrees each
 Capricorn is the 10th Sign of the Kala Purusha
 The starting degrees of Capricorn is 270:00
 The ending degrees of Capricorn is 300:00

 The Lagna degrees is 29:22 in Capricorn

 So the total longitudinal degrees would be 270:00 + 29:22 = 299:22
 That is 299 degrees and 22 minutes

 29:22 in Capricorn
 Or 299:22
 Mean the same and refer to the same longitudinal point in the Zodiac

The starting degrees of Capricorn is 270:00

It is good if we can remember the starting and the ending degrees of each Sign.
Otherwise there is method as to how the starting degrees can be mentally computed.

Minus 30:00 degrees from the Ending Degrees
To arrive at the Starting Degrees
300:00 degrees – 30 degrees = 270:00
And 270:00 degrees is the Starting Degrees of the Sign of Capricorn

Specific Placement of Lagna
 In a Natchitra
 And in a Pada

In every Sign there are 3 Natchitras

A natchitra covers an arc of 13:20 degrees
A natchitra has 4 padas of 3:20 degrees each

And if we divide a sign of 30:00 degrees by 3:20 degrees

We would get 9 padas in a Sign

If all the 4 padas of a natchitra are within the 30:00 degrees of the Sign
The natchitra would be referred to as a complete or a full natchitra
And if in a sign there are less than the 4 padas
That is, 1 or 2 or 3 padas
Then such a natchitra would be referred to as a Split Natchitra or part of a natchitra

Therefore in a Sign there would be a mix of full and split natchitras as follows:
 2 full natchitras (2x4 padas) plus 1 pada of a split natchitra
o 2 x 4 = 8 padas + 1 pada = 9 padas
o as in Aries, Leo, Sagittarius
o and Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces
 3 padas of a split natchitra, 1 full natchitra and 2 padas of a split natchitra
o 3 padas + 4 padas + 2 padas = 9 padas
o as in Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn
 2 padas of a split natchitra, 1 full natchitra and 3 padas of a split natchitra
o 2 padas + 4 padas + 3 padas = 9 padas
o as in Gemini, Libra and Aquarius

 A ‘natchitra’ and a ‘pada’ come under the equal division of the zodiac

Specific Placement of Lagna in a Pada
And the Pada Lord

There are 2 ways on how to identify the Pada Lord:

 From the D-9 Chart, by looking in which Sign the Lagna or any planet is placed
 The Sign Lord in the D-9 Chart is the Pada Lord

 By referring to the Master Table for the Amsa (Sign) Name and Pada Lord

 Through Manual Calculation

o We have to know the Degrees of the Lagna or the Planets in the D-1 Chart
o Calculate in which pada (out of the 9 padas) the Lagna or the Planets are in the D-1 Chart
o Each Pada has been assigned the Amsa (Sign) Name and the Pada Lord
o Once this has been understood and memorised it is easy to manually derive the
Pada Lord

1. From the Navamsa D-9 Chart,

by looking in which Sign the ‘Lagna or any Planet’ is placed

For the above chart, the Lagna is in Capricorn

The quick way to identify the Pada Lord
Is to look for the placement of the Lagna in the Navamsa D-9 Chart

 We have to know the Degrees of the Lagna or the Planets in the D-1 Chart
 Calculate in which pada (out of the 9 padas) the Lagna or the Planets are in the D-1 Chart
 Each Pada has been assigned the Amsa (Sign) Name and the Pada Lord
o Once this has been understood and memorised it is easy to manually derive the Pada
Lord

The 9th pada in Capricorn

Is also the total pada number 90
From 90 minus the multiples of 12
And 12 x 7 = 84, which is lesser than 90
So from 90 minus 84 = 6 is the remainder
The remainder should not be more than 12
It should be 12 or less

The remainder number ‘6’ represents or refers to the ‘6 th sign from Aries’
Which is Virgo
So the Amsa (Sign) Name is Virgo
And Virgo Sign Lord is Mercury
