CHAPTER I: PROJECT OVERVIEW
The Project

The project is having a two-layer natural slope at Manggahan Floodway within the Vicinity of
Taytay, Rizal (Brgy. San Juan Section). The road is approximately 14 meters high and 9.5-meter-wide with
its soil properties. It is to be analyzed for its stability in static condition, both in wet and dry conditions. The
analysis is for a certain road project, to be just beside the said slope.

Manggahan Floodway was built in 1986 under the administration of Former President Ferdinand E. Marcos
to reduce flooding along Pasig River. It is an Artificial Constructed Waterways amounting 1.1 Billion pesos
which diverts the peak water flow of Marikina River going to a Temporary Reservoir which is the Laguna
Lake. On September of 2009 when Bagyong Ondoy hit Metro Manila in less than 24 hours it dumped a
month’s quantity of rainfall which causes Marikina River and Floodway to burst its banks. According to
studies Blocked Pipes, Poorly Maintained sewer system, and Uncollected Domestic Waste are the reasons
of this unfortunate event but the Major Factor Contributing to this is the Illegal Settlers occupying the river
banks of Manggahan Floodway. Initially the design width of Manggahan Floodway is 260 meters (850 ft.)
for Over 40,000 households illegally residing on its banks its effective width reduced to 220 meters (720 ft.).
According to UP National Hydraulic Research Center during the storm, Marikina River had flown 3000
meter per second of storm water and floodway could have handled the flow without overflowing if there
were no settlers on its banks.

The aim of this project is to provide a Slope Stability Protection along the River Banks of Manggahan
Floodway within the Vicinity of Taytay, Rizal (Brgy. San Juan Section) to achieve the maximum function of
the spillway before and during natural calamities.

Project Objective

The project design team aims to achieve the following objectives.

General Objective

To design a safe and economic Slope Stability along the River Banks of Manggahan Floodway within the
Vicinity of Taytay, Rizal.

Specific Objectives

 To design a non-complex Slope Stability considering Geostudio and using manual computation

 To provide the most effective and efficient design based on the alternatives

 To proposed a quality design which can maximize the intended use of Manggahan Floodway
before and during natural calamities.

The Client

The client of the design project is Engr. Jerome Tadiosa who prefers a slope stability that is limited to
the given budget and that can be constructed within the given amount of time that will be constructed with
safety and with the proper application of an Engineering approach.
Project Scope and Limitations

Scope

The following are the scope covered by the project:

 To design a slope protection utilizing modern engineering software.

 Designing of the slope protection system considering the alternatives.

Limitation

The following are the limitations by the project:

 Data to be used shall be taken from the Department of Public Works and Highways Central Office,
District Engineering Offices, and Taytay Municipality of Taytay.

 Detailed construction of the project is not included.

 Project estimate quantity cost will not be covered
