suitable for listening.

Consequently, the students will be able to

develop positive listening habits and greater comprehension.

The follow up activity is an important part of the listening

program as it contribute in the learning process. Follow up
activities should be well planned, be implemented immediately
after the listening activity and be a direct extension of it.

Advantages of Follow up activities:

 Give a purpose to the listening process and help to set a
positive precedent for succeeding listening activities.
 Provide an opportunity to check comprehension ,correct
concepts, and clarify tenuous learning.
 Allow children to apply their new information immediately.
 It is a basis for developing permanent good listening habits.

Teachers must adjust the unreasonable amount of time they

require children to listen to them each day and the amount of
time children are expected to listen to the teacher. This can be
a disadvantage for children who may not learn best by listening
and for teachers to keep every listening lesson motivating and
interesting.

Hence teachers should reduce the amount of time children

need to listen each day. Moreover opportunities should be
given to children so that they can listen to each other.

Listening for a long period of time can cause children to lose

concentration leading to negative effect on their attitudes and
the development of positive listening habits.
WHEN TO TEACH LISTENING?

The appropriate time to teach listening skills is when the

children are ready to listen.
For example:
During arts, music, physical education, social studies and
science activities.

 Teachers should take time to listen to children, show

sincere interest in their activities and provide opportunities
for them to ask questions and share their experiences.

 Make a point of recognizing and praise those who are good

listeners.

 Allow children to restate questions, directions, explanations,

or other children’s answers.

 Teachers should not answer every question ask by children

as this might destroy the opportunity to provide meaningful
oral and listening experiences for the other members of the
class.
EXPOSURE TO DIFFERENT EXPERIENCES:

 Listening for appreciation:

For example: Poetry, Music, Humorous Stories, etc..

 Information:
For example: Announcements, Reports, Films, etc..

 Critical Analysis:
For example: Explain speaker’s purpose, determine bias, or
separate fact from fiction, etc..

 Creative Exposure:
For example: Cloral Reading, Creative Writing, Story Telling,
etc..

Those different kinds of experiences provide a variety of

purposes for listening, help to develop different levels of ability
and interest which might later help to respond to the demand
of adulthood.
