Hello Ed 2500 class,

I am pleased to present to you our contemporary issue in education: Self-esteem in the classroom
at the elementary level.

First I will share our chosen definition for self-esteem: confidence in one's own worth or
abilities; self-respect.

We would now like to introduce ourselves as a team to the class. I am Aaron Tober (next
Jaydalyn, others introduce themselves briefly)

Next slide please, thank you.

(Back to me): Second slide:

Today I will be discussing the relevancy of self-esteem in the school classroom.

Self-esteem is relevant in the elementary school classroom for various childhood developmental
reasons: Aspects of the following will be expanded upon by my fellow team members. I have
compiled the follow bullets points as paraphrased from my research on the relevancy of self-
esteem in school children.

Self-esteem….

 Increases a student’s motivation to learn new things because a child feels good about
themselves as an individual. When a student or child feels positive about themselves, i.e.
has a healthy attitude on how they view themselves their motivation to learn increases
substantially.
 Enhances a child’s social interaction skills in the classroom. This is important because a
good self-esteem will help a child effectively make friends, form healthy relationships
with teachers, classmates and other school staff.
 Prepares children for success for the remainder of their lives. The sooner a child builds up
their self-esteem the better they can cope with the challenges of life. Inevitably students
will encounter various challenges in a school setting.

Health and well-being are grounded in a strengthened self-esteem:

o Children at an early age benefit from learning how to have a healthy self-esteem.
As a result the foundations for good mental health are built.
o Academic achievement improves as a result of higher self-esteem.
 Teachers can help with building self-esteem:
o Strategies implemented towards specific student needs on a continual basis.
o An educator’s influence in a child’s life plays a significant role. A teacher fosters
a healthy, friendly and supportive relationship which encourages a child to learn.
On the right hand side I chose to include three images relating to self-esteem.

 The first picture represents a gauge measuring a person’s self-esteem. As a teacher or

parent it is important to recognize what level a child’s self-esteem is currently at. Once
this assessment has been done a teacher can begin determining strategies to guide and
encourage a child. Implementing these strategies can strengthen their level of self-esteem.

 The second picture represents the process by which a student or child can overcome their
initial low self-esteem. Eventually it is possible for the child through the help of all of
those involved, teachers included, to obtain a higher self-esteem. The student’s
improvement can be celebrated in various ways and acknowledged by teachers. Once at a
healthier, higher, and confident level of self-esteem a child or student can then realize
their achieved success.

 The third image simply summarizes the major key points of self-esteem. The emphasis in
this image is that the evaluation of a child’s self in the classroom is a relevant issue to all
learners. To answer the vital question below these concise answers are given:

Why is self-esteem important? : It is important because it can affect the following crucial
dimensions of a person’s life:

 Your mental health

 How you behave
 You decisions
 Your friendships
 Your success
 Your quality of life

These realities will be discussed in further detail by my team members.

 Now Jaydalyn will speak to us about different levels of self-esteem in children and school
students.
