MCV4U Chapter 4 Review

Tomorrow’s test will cover the following material.

4-1: Increasing and Decreasing Functions

1. Be able to use the first derivative to state over which intervals a function is increasing or
decreasing. It is often helpful to factor first.

4-2: Maximum and Minimum Values

1. Know how to check for local and absolute/global maxima and minima (critical values
and endpoints).

4-3: First Derivative Test

1. Be able to use the first derivative test to classify critical points as maxima, minima or
neither.

4-4: Applications
1. Be able to solve optimization problems. The general format of these problems is:
identify the variables; write an expression to optimize using one variable; find the critical
values and endpoints; test if critical values and endpoints are maxima; minima or neither;
write a conclusion.

3-5: Related Rates

1. Be able to determine the rate of change of one quantity given the rate of change of a
related quantity.
