PART-A (ANSWER ALL THE QUESTIONS) 05 x 02=10 Marks
01. State Hooke's Law and explain
02. State the main difference between a close and open coiled helical spring
03. Write down the relationship between Young's Modulus and Bulk Modulus
04. Define stiffness of a spring.
05. What is polar modulus of a section
PART-B (ANSWER ALL THE QUESTIONS) 03 x 10=30 Marks
06. (a) A rod of 2 m length and 40 mm diameter is subjected to a pull (10)
of 30 kN. The extension in length is 0.3 mm and the decreases
in diameter is 0.0018 mm. Find the three moduli and Poisson's
ratio.
[OR]

(b) A closed coiled helical spring is to have a stiffness of 900 N/m in (10)
compression with a maximum load of 45N and maximum shearing
stress of 120 N/ mm2 .The solid length of the spring (i.e., coils are
touching)is 45 mm. Find the diameter of wire, mean diameter of
coil and the number of coils. C=40 kN/ mm2
07. (a) A cylindrical shell 3.25 m long, 1000 mm internal diameter, (10)
10 mm wall thickness is subjected to an internal pressure of 1
N/mm2. Determine change in diameter, change in length and
change in volume. Take Poisson's ratio=0.3 and E=200 KN/ mm2.
[OR]
(b) Find the thickness of metal necessary for thick cylindrical (10)
shell of internal diameter 200mm to withstand an internal
pressure of 50 N/ mm2. The hoop stress in the section is not to
exceed 150 N/ mm2.
08. (a) A solid steel bar 500 mm long and 70 mm diameter is placed (10)
inside an aluminium tube having 75 mm inside diameter and 100
mm outside diameter. The aluminium cylinder is 0.15 mm longer
than the steel bar. An axial load of 600 kN is applied to the bar
and the cylinder through rigid cover plates. Find the stresses
developed in the steel bar and aluminium tube. Take Young's
modulus as 2.2x 105 N/mm2 and O.7x 105 N/ mm2for steel and
aluminium respectively.
(b) i) State the assumptions in the theory of simple bending (5)

09. (a) A bar 20 mm in diameter and 10 m Jong was subjected to (10)

an axial pull of 60 kN. The extension of the bar was found
to be 0.15 mm, while decrease in the diameter was found to
be 0.15 mm. Find the Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio,
rigidity modulus and bulk modulus of the material of the bar.

[OR]

(b) Steel bar 35 x 35 mm2 in section and·100 mm long is acted (10)

upon by a tensile load of 180 kN along its longitudinal axis and
400 kN and 300 kN along the axes of the lateral surfaces.
Determine (i) change in the dimensions of the bar (ii) change
in volume (ii) longitudinal axial load acting alone to produce
the same longitudinal strain as in case .
